I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, so I'll give my quick and brief two cents. I've learned that in general, people don't question you if you look like you know where you're going. An elementary school bathroom in San Pedro, California is underground and has fallout bunkers and I was desperate to explore. I'm quite noticeable with pink hair and all that, but walking with confidence usually gets you somewhere.

Definitely, behaving as if you do belong does get you through some places. Others, it just won't happen. Riverview psyche hospital out here for example, at night, you can't act like you belong, because nobody but security is wandering the grounds. Then it has to be stealth... walking silently... as the thread started out...

Are you familiar with the French sport of "Le Parkour"? This post has less to do with walking silently, and more to do with landing high falls. Some of these guys jump off buildings that appear to be 12-18 feet high! I saw one of them do a backflip.

Do a google search on "Le Parkour", or go to www.le-parkour.com if you need more info.

Not to flame or anything, but I just checked out that web site and it was silly. It looked like a Mountain Dew ad for "XTREEM RUNNING AND JUMPING!!!" A bunch of over caffinated kids bouncing off of walls. lol

Anyway, back to running and jumping silently. I just picked up a pair of generic aquasocks from my local sporting goods store for US$5. Nice soft rubber sole is really grippy and I can even sneak up on my cat now. And of course they shed water nicely. Makes a good option to those martial arts booties. Likewise, they offer little protection from cuts.

Touch the outer edge of your heel down softly, then slowly roll your weight down along the outer edge of your foot until your weight is on the ball of your foot. This is the simplest way to walk very quietly, and still look somewhat inconspicuous.

Ninja dynasty? Right on. Ummm...

pyro, i know you dont like tabis but this forum is about sharing info about UE and using that info to become a better explorer. I have never used tabis but several people swear by them and i think i owe it to myself to see what all the fuss is about. if they work well for me, then thats great but if they dont i'll post a comment saying so, and tell people to not waste their money. Innovation and the sharing of knowledge gained is how things get better. If you know 1st hand that tabis suck then do us a favor and speak up. if not you really can't have an opinion about something you know nothing about.

each type of gear has benefits in some areas. Tabi's are great for climbing and silent movement. They are not good for walking through broken glass and nails or sewers. For running they don't give great support, so ya don't wanna run a marathon in em...

picture this. Pyro and Jester, infiltrating a secute site together, an alarm is tripped (each blaming the other of course). Both take off, with guards in hot pursuit. reaching the fence, Jester and his Tabi are over and clear by the time Pyro's hands are cresting the top, and the guard grabs onto him and hauls him down...

Those who have climbed in Tabi know what I say is true...
anyone who hasn't, hasn't got a leg to stand on in this debate...

I have nothing against Tabis. I know they're good boots. Not my favorite, but good nonetheless. It's just that Ninja Dynasty seems kind of...cheesy. I really mean no offense.

...the two are on the verge of getting away but as they come to the fence they decide stop and rehash the same tired argument about footwear they always have, even though they know with absolute confidence that neither of them will ever persuade the other of anything.

The guards catch the two and immediately gag them. Pyro notices that Jester is wearing a black gag, and strains to convince him that a dark green gag would have been much better.

As much as I enjoyed Ninj's little storytime adventure (and I DID enjoy it), let's get back into topic.

MOCHI'S HELPFUL TIP OF THE DAY: FLUID AND RESPONSIVE MOTION

Bruce Lee taught that his martial arts were not wigid and stiff, like his predecessor's forms had always been, but fluid and adaptive, like water itself. When walking, be adaptive and ready for the unexpected, like creaky floorboards, loose beams, puddles of slime, or even bits of human flesh from the CHUD up ahead of you hiding behind that dumpster. Be responsive to your surroundings and be ever-aware, totally in control of your walking, yet ready to change your tactics for whatever may come along. Tread lightly and surely. Know where your feet are going. Pay attention to what's beneath you, not above (although watch out for that low water pipe).

Peace out, my fellow explorers.

I've read alot of the discussions on Tabi's around the board and wonder where to get them. If there was a martial arts store around here that would work but there isn't. Directing these questions to Jester who seems to know alot about the subject are there any good places to get Tabi's online and what is a good price to pay for a pair?

I've only bought Tabi in person in Martial arts supply stores. They do need a good fit, so I like to be able to try them on... there are also variations of how thick/rigid the soles are, lowcut and calf-high styles, as well as different closures (velcro or clips). I pay about $50 canadian for a pair regardless of features.

From what I've seen, most large cities have at least one place that sells them, look in your phonebook under Martial arts supplies.

If you must order them online, just do some searches, lots of places out there, and compare the best ya can...

The only ones I've ever found have those horrible little metal clips on them. (available @ Golden Arrow on Hastings)
Where do you find the velcro ones?

hmm, when we were shopping for them, we saw them at a place on hastings, around the 700 block I believe, but I can't remember the name of it. They had both varieties of clasps, though not all sizes in both. Possibly they were old stock and are gone now... not sure. mine are the metal clips too, and they are a pain sometimes...

Some of the people from my ninjutsu class just install the velcro themselves. It's quite inexpensive, and you can 'tailor' it to fit you perfectly.

I wear the low cut ones, so it's only a few clips, not as bad as Scarab's with the calf height...
