Much of ninjitsu is gravely exaggerated. They can't really fall from much higher than a normal person. I sprained an ankle from two stories, and I rolled and did everything the military way that they showed me. I don't think they can jump from much higher than that. Their accuracy with weapons is also exaggerated. For example, a throwing star (shuriken) is a horribly inaccurate weapon. No matter how good you are, it's hard to do Hollywood-esque stunts with it. The star itself deviates in the air. Even if it is throw by a machine, it still won't be overly accurate.

On topic;
I think we can all agree that having some practice and technique in falling or even walking silently is far better then having no practice or idea of technique at all.

Off topic;
Ninjitsu as an art being greatly exaggerated is definitely true. Of course look at how bad all martial arts are represented in hollywood. Things like Shuriken were used mostly as diversionary tactic when retreating, much like caltrops. They could cause a deep bleeding wound, but to actually kill anyone with one would be a lucky stroke indeed. If used as a pure strain weapon at all, they were used at close range, much the same as throwing knives or spikes. I think the fame of the shuriken is overblown anyway. Throwing spikes or even short bows were probably utilized much more often for their accuracy.

Falling : Being able to fall over 10 feet and land properly is an invaluable skill. An explorer that knows how to take a fall of a reasonable distance has a huge advantage over one that does not. I've taken falls that I definitely would have sustained injuries from had I not known how to take the fall properly.

Shuriken : But, that said, at close range, say within 20 feet, you can be quite accurate with shuriken. Even at that range, you still wouldn't be killing someone unless it was a fluke, but you could definitely hit within a 6 inch target area at that range, and i'm sure that would certainly make them rethink whatever action they had planned...

True that, a little knowledge goes a long way. The way I see it, all this mind and body stuff for walking silently, you know, with the dancing and ghosts, etc. was fine back then, but it has nothing on our modern day physics. That's why martial arts like Krav Maga, designed in this century are so much more effective than those designed thousands of years ago.

I wouldn't say *so much more effective* in regards to the newer style martial arts. In freestyle competitions, it's generally muay thai that is the most dominant style. As well, the best of the muay thai practicioners are the short ones, usually under 5'7.

Are you familiar with the French sport of "Le Parkour"? This post has less to do with walking silently, and more to do with landing high falls. Some of these guys jump off buildings that appear to be 12-18 feet high! I saw one of them do a backflip.

Do a google search on "Le Parkour", or go to www.le-parkour.com if you need more info.

If it's done properly, you can take a pretty big fall. But, that's with proper training and equipment, not "spririts".

I agree, however, falling, and jumping are two very separate things.

There's a lot more to the *spiritual stuff* than just the sensationalized crap you see though. Many martial arts have techniques involving the *soft* side (mental training). Go watch the Shaolin monks if they come to your town and do a demonstration, then tell me what you think of the spiritual stuff. They can do amazing things, through very intense physical and Mental disciplines...

If you've ever seen the U.S. Army Special Operations group, or the 101st, or the SE.A.L.s, they can do great things too, but without haveing to pray and meditate for a while first.

That's great, but it's not really the subject here. The subject involves what techniques are used to stealth effectively.

Personal spiritual belief of whatever group is not an issue. Contests on who can stealth or jump farther are meaningless. If one does it because of intensive training and belief in that intensive training, while another also uses intensive training and believes in a philosophical/religious doctrine doesn't matter. There are no true Ninja in the world anymore anyway.

The end justifies the means. If you can move quietly by praying, then you're still moving quietly, no matter what you did to do so. If you prefer the more logical approach, then you're still moving quietly.

Every martial art I've trained in had very logical body kinemetics to accomplish whatever physical feat. Any meditation and such was used as an exercise to focus the mind and will. Which quite honestly helped tremendously. This is also true of special forces training which teaches focused mental tricks and breathing techniques to accomplish the same goal. In fact it often resembles simple meditation. So meditation, prayer and such seems just as "logical" to me if you keep it within the context it was designed for. Of course just like religion, crap gets added to any pure tradition, weighing it down with extra useless junk. Just as many modern day trained soldiers become quite superstitous about irrevelent things in the field. It's all human nature really. When looked at objectively, many different things become equal.

Regardless, it again is not really the topic...
So what technique(s) do you use to move silently? Any tips for the threadmaster?

True that. I'm sure everything in it was relevant at one time, but it isn't necessarily now.

I tried walking silently across who knows how many years of undisturbed forest floor, and sounded like the goddamn blair witch. Luckily no security around, but there was just no helping the crackles of snapping twigs under my feet echoing everywhere, no matter how slow I went. Moving non-uniformly was the only thing that seemed to help, as Jester pointed out already.

Stilts would be great... very little contact with the floor, and great for those second floor windows, but unpractical hehe.

Stilts make a lot more noise, thiknk about it. THere's a much higher concentration of pressure. I agree, though, forest floors are hard. The best thikng to do is try and walk on moss and exposed tree roots. Not always possible.

I guess its inevitable crunching on things... now I'm thinking about buying some waterproof boots and hiking up a shallow creek into the perimiter of the area to eliminate the foot noise.

thats a decent idea. creativity is what seperates a typical explorer from a great explorer... well, that and tabi boots... :p

but seriously, it's a good plan, but you still make noise in the water, but at least the running water can cover a lot of it...
