Ringwood Manor - Whitby

Hi all,

I did a search but found nothing about the recent activity at Ringwood Manor in Whitby.

For those in the area, I'm sure you've noticed that there's 'somebody' doing 'something' to it. The roof has been removed, as well as the window frames, and looks like the complete interior I hope I am safe to assume that this probably means - since the exterior walls are being left intact, that there is going to be some sort of attempt to restore Ringwood. Later this week I have to go into the Rona right beside it - if the workers are there I'm going to be nosy and see what exactly is going on.

If anybody has information to add, please do so! I'm glad it looks like they're going to try restore it.

When I was driving by on the 401 yesterday I did notice some dude pulling up to the main gate and proceeding to unlock the padlock. I guess the owners finally decided to go ahead fixing up the place rather than demolishing it. I'm kind of stunned they'd go this route as the place was really quite badly damaged from the vandals and the arsonists.

Yes, it is. Beside the new RONA, facing the road that leads to Gerdau Ameristeel (formerly Co-Steel Lasco).

Some years ago it was burned by arsonists and sustained major damage. I too have noticed the recent activity.

It was such a majestic place, such a short time ago. Looking at it now, its a shell of its former self.

Here's hoping the place can be restored. I remember the owners were planning on renovating the place for their business before the fire and thought with the fire that was all off.

Sounds encouraging though. If they were going to demolish the place, they would have just pulled down the shell and be done with it.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

I took these yesterday. Sorry for the crappy quality, they're cell phone pics. There were no workers there when I went by, so I have no news to report. I did notice though that they took away the "Ringwood 1876" and the pretty woodwork that was above it. I hope they didn't toss it. Hopefully they're going to clean it up and reinstall it or something.

I've noticed the activity there as well and it sure looks like they're beginning to restore the old girl. On a related note, the old mill house in Ajax is looking good as well.

A couple of older articles, but good reads:

I passed it on Saturday and noticed that work was being done also. It's just one of those places that always seems to catch your eye on the 401.

That sure doesn't look like your typical demo job. Wow, if they actually fix her up I will be ECSTATIC. That place was always my dream house. Well, maybe in a different location although it IS close to Princess Auto!

Yeah, I thought I'd noticed "For Sale" signs from the highway too, which led me to believe that they were just doing a slow demolition for some reason.

I certainly would love to see a restoration, but I haven't been holding my breath. That's about as prime a piece of big box real estate as you could imagine.

I have a feeling its going to be demoed.... whats happening there is the same thing that happen to the Thomas Cook house in Richmond Hill, it was once a historical house, but had a fire (thanks to a fuckin' arsonist), they started the renos (so we thought) they took the roof off and they replaced it but in the long run it got demoed, and is now a Longos plaza, but ya never know Ringwood Manor may have a different outcome.

In 2008, the property owners requested the Town delist Ringwood as a heritage structure. They claimed the house was not structurally sound, and could not afford the $1.5M required to restore the site. It should be noted the owners did not secure the house against the elements nor prevent widespread vandalism (theft of copper piping and marble fixtures). The Town refused a demolition permit until the property owners reassess the condition of the structure by providing an up-to-date report.

As much as I love Whitby, it's been notorious for demolishing historical buildings *cough*whitbypsych*cough*
