conquer[ing] fear.

I have been born, with a truly unfortunate combination. Fascinated by heights, but horribly terrified of falling, lately I've been trying to get "over it" by forcing myself into high positions. The psychological term would call it flooding, I would just called it, scaring the shit out of myself.

Saturday, this mission in mind, we ventured out, the first stop including an investigation of an abandoned missile silo from the cold war. Rumor had it, in the late 50's the government set up a Intercontinental Ballistic Missile silo and command station on the top of a particular mountain. In 1962 the missile was accidently launched (luckily shot down over the Atlantic), and the station was abandoned.

Curious, we began our climb of the mountain. Well, then it began to storm. Then the tiny horrible dirt road began to get slippery. Then my life flashed before my eyes as our car slipped and starting falling off the mountain side. Luckily, the car got caught on a small hill and sat teetering off the edge. Jumping out, I thanked whoever it is that you thank, and tried to solve the issue. This involved several long, hopeless hours trying to convince a tow truck to climb to the ALMOST peak of a mountain... in a storm. However, we met some mountain people who were able to call the police and they handled it. I got to sit in the back of a cop car. PLASTIC SEATS! Whoo!

Anyway, with our car finally back on solid ground, 4 hours later, we began our final hike to the top of the mountain.

We found a strange spiral road, and decided to follow it.

Five minutes later, this loomed above our heads.

accompanied by this strange concrete building...

Climb it? well of course!

ps. this is why my state's for lovers

(thanks to the wonderful people on UER, I was able to conclude that perhaps this was indeed the abandoned communications tower. Built especially for the government by AT&T, this Microwave tower was built to out last a nuclear attack!
Unfortunately the silo wasn't found... must wait for another day.)

Shaking, sweating, and anxiety rising, I finished shooting off and climbed back down. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around scoping out sights. Finally, for J. and I's lovely saturday night date, we watched the sun set from a top famed Art Deco Scraper, The Allied Arts Building.

Now that I've gotten a few tall heights (including some other things) under my belt, it isn't such a nerve racking experience. Who knew? I'm actually starting to feel comfortable up there!

Nice post, glad you made it safe and were still able to go exploring after the scare. I too am afraid of heights and I love to climb so I was in the same boat. I love the adrinaline rush so I don't mind "flooding" to get over the scare and have my rush too boot lol.

Only thing worth losing are people who hold you back. I never know whats going to happen so i carry alot of shit to be ready.

Wow. That's pretty scary!
I love the second picture with the shapes emerging from the trees. It's quite abstract!

Awesome! I'm the same way about heights. It's love/hate all the way. I'm planning on climbing my first crane in a little bit, if I can actually bring myself to do it.

Awesome post! I respect anyone who is able to face their fears like this. Everyone is afraid of shit. It's our willingness to face our fears that makes us strong.

That sounds like a ridiculously fun day. Longlines are awesome, i'm jealous that you got to climb one on top of a mountain.

Great post! I think its totally cool that you got to climb a military communications tower on top of a mountain. I think that every kid has wanted to do that at some point in their life

And good on you for staring your fear in the face. The more you do what you're scared of, the less it'll scare you!

Hope you find that silo, too!

So awesome. I have been trying to find some of these towers around here, but no luck as they're either contracted out to the cell companies or demo'd. Oh well, I'd better keep searching...

I find there only two types of heights.
"broken bones" and "holyshitdeath"
Falling through things scares me more than falling off things.

+1 on the awesomeness

You really should come to CT ... we have one atop a 1000 ft cliff ... no horn repeaters anymore but still "holyshitdeath" goodness, it's only an hour/hour-half from NYC...

That's awesome that you are working on conquering that fear. I, too, love heights but am terrified of falling... it stops me from doing a lot of things. I get vertigo if I get too close to an open ledge. But if there is a sturdy rail or such in from of me, then I'm fine. People like us just need to go bungee jumping and get over it, huh?

Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or play with it, Just pee on it and walk away.

Yes and yes.

Might be a bit hairy going off the tower, though. I'll send you a pm with the infos.
