| | | Just to confirm, I went back for another visit and can confirm that Silo #2 is much more empty and Silo #3 was probably the emptiest. We skipped #1 as it was probably mostly still full. The place has definitely dried out a lot more in the past month. Im sure it probably progresses from very damp, wet and muddy in early spring to much more dry in the fall. One of these days i'll get high res versions on flickr ;)

| | | That last pic is hella awesome. I have that spray painted in my room. Read Dante's Inferno a year ago. I mean they're all awesome, but that last one in particular is cool because it applies to so many places I have been in. [last edit 3/8/2011 7:39 AM by miirkat - edited 1 times]

| | | Not to re-resurrect this old thread again, but I came across this video and was reminded of the title "Titan in the dark of night". You think the dark of night is bad, throw in the fact that you're in SCUBA gear and see how you do... These guys dove into a flooded Titan I in Washington: http://vimeo.com/19172657 I'd love to do something like this.

I don't think it should be too bad -- if it's been flooded for decades, the contaminants should have settled into the bottom, and other contaminants might reside around the surface. /-/oolie

| | | There was one somewhere that was being used as by a diving school. That was like a dozen years ago though, not sure if it still is.

Yeah, there was one in Texas, and one in Washington (perhaps the site depicted) that'd had publicity related to SCUBA diving ops over the past couple years. Wow, I actually remembered the name of the Texas operation... http://www.familys...id/67/Default.aspx

Yeah, I have several hundred photo's. I will see about getting them online and share them with my fellow UE's Deer trail is partially flooded in area's, and more so after winter I would imagine. The water level is/was about a foot or two below what used to be the floor. Later in the year it dries out quit a bit. That vid was awesome. You can actually walk around (in deer trail) in many of the same places that are flooded in the video, though the water in the video looked much cleaner than that in the silo's i've seen. With the fuel and chemicals used to power those rockets, I am not sure I would scuba in any of those silo's myself.

| | | The dive video is awesome! Thanks for posting. I'm surprised how clear the water is and how little corrosion there is. Much of that steel looks better than the steel above water. Maybe because of low-oxygenated water, good lead paint coverage, or being in pitch darkness. When I saw pics on another site of Sturgis being pumped out, that water was nasty and anything metal was eaten away.

| | | Posted by AvsFreak Went to my first Titan base yesterday... WOW. That sure was a very surreal experience. Even just at the entrance you got a cold wind blowing out with a strong smell of Kerosene. Odd to have a cold breeze on a 97 degree day ;) We were there for about 4 hours and still didn't see it all. (only went to missile silo 3) but what an amazing experience. It will be hard to beat the coolness of this location, at least in Colorado. I plan on taking a few friends back sometime before it is sealed off and I would really like to see about getting in one of the other Titans nearby that might be in better condition. Not sure which ones are accessible or not. Here are a few pics and the full set is here. http://www.flickr....2157624665208771/

The picture with the ridiculous looking ladder that is hanging from a man hole, is the way Geneboy and I got out today when we took our trip down there. We were quite surprised to see where we popped up at. Hahah... and the fact that the ladder didn't completely give way.

| | | Yup These are some pictures from a recent trip with SnipeHunter. It was so nice in the tunnels the temperature was like 50 compared to the 80 that it was outside. What a way to cool off. That ladder certainly was suspect. Turns out it's mighty sturdy.
We caught an alien looking in at us... well, of course that isn't the truth, but it sure looks like one is.

| | | Definitely was a great trip, wish things weren't pillaged as badly as they are. But I guess that's what you get when the thing's been abandoned like... 30 years. I think we're aiming to make it to the other ones in the area sometime soon.

More like twenty, I think. I just figure the silos would become inactive following the end of the Cold War which ended one year before I was born. It's hard to believe it wasn't such a long time ago, barely. As for pillaging, it can't be helped. Whenever I'm down in a silo my inherent viking tendencies emerge and well, the rest is history I suppose.

http://en.wikipedi...Titan_I#Retirement http://www.chromehooves.net/ decommissioned in 1965 and probably scrapped shortly thereafter. that's 46 years ago. active for only four years. remarkable, isn't it, when you consider the scale of the thing.
