Thanks for all the information everyone, it was a lot of help. I still plan on making this trip soon. As to what type of mine this is: it's a mine where they once harvested tungsten for the consumption of the masses. Lot's of cool old buildings and equipment still around too, not mention a big lake with a cool view and the such.

| Tungsten is usually mined underground. Scheelite and/or wolframite is frequently located in rather narrow veins which are slightly inclined and often widen with the depth. Open pit mines exist but are rare. |
But do more Googling of your own, and if you can't find more information online look stuff up at the library or talk to someone from NCSU or somewhere who would know more about these mines.

Bring a nice length of fishing line (glow in the dark if you can find it) so you don't get lost, especially since I doubt any readily-accessible maps exist for this mine. Oh and tell someone where you're going. Friend of mine was stranded for nearly two days because he hadn't told anyone he was solo exploring an Atlas F missile silo!! Some maniac had pulled up his ladder, trapping him.

You found the Tungsten Queen Mine heh? I heard all of the subsurface tunnels were at such a depth that they would certainly be flooded. I know the main shaft goes down many hundreds of feet. Maybe my sources are wrong, I really hope so, "dry" subsurface workings like this are rare this far east, I know of only one other near Rocky Mount and its quite disappointing because the tunnel is so short.
Can you see anything at the bottom? I wrote this site off years ago but this renews my interest.
B.T.W, there are other ways to enter besides rope and prussic, such as rope and truck, winch, rope & cathead.......nevermind just use kermantle rope.
