| | | Entering Mine via Vertical Shaft? < on 2/22/2010 8:11 PM >
| | | So, I have this certain mine that is no longer in operation in mind for exploration. Me and my friends had been searching the area for an opening to the mine below for some time only to be faced with a daunting 30 or 40ft drop of an entrance. Now, how would you go about getting to the bottom? I have thought about this a bit and can't really come up with anything practicle. Any suggestions?

| | | That can't have been the only entrance: how did the miners get in/out?

I've been in lots of mines with only vertical entrances, ever heard of elevators?

This was a thought I had. I just need to come up with money for the gear.

Rope ladders are cheap. They are NOT worth the trouble.

Yeah, the only solutions I could think of besides this are WAY more expensive or difficult. This isn't in the central NC area, is it? I didn't think we could have a hole more than 3 or 4 feet deep that wasn't full of water.

Yeah, it's in central NC. I'm guessing it isn't full of water because there is a labrynth of mines below for water to flow freely about.

| | | don't need much money for a pair of prusiks. That being said, although they are perfectly acceptable for ascending, I would definitely recommend testing out the system before you're in the mine, they tend to bind a bit till you get used to them. http://www.youtube...Fxdx8Y&feature=fvw

| | | A decent (descent? =D) rope is the most expensive part. If its only a 40ft drop, get at least 60 ft of rope or so. There's at least some chance that if there's that kinda drop goin INTO the mine, that there's more vertical past the point of opening that you can see from the top though. Me, I'd use a 150' or 200' line to start off with so you can rappell down to the opening, and still have plenty of line left to work with if you have to go further from there. A simple descender can be gotten anywhere for around $12 bucks, and 2 prussiks can be bought for about $2 each. A couple inexpensive locking biners and you're set for a simple rig. (well, and a harness of course, but you *can* tie those up using webbing also, its just not very comfy.) You can get an inexpensive harness for $25 - $30. As previously mentioned.... LEARN TO USE THE GEAR before you attempt to use it for your trip. There is lots of info on this forum, and elsewhere about equipment and how to use it, learn up on it before you try anything.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

| | | I used to go to Raleigh all the time. It's been a little while but I'll be back again eventually. I own rappelling and ascending equipment. I have a Petzl rack, 2 Petzl Ascenders, 200 ft of climbing rope and 2 harnesses. I'll definitely bring it with me and get in touch with you next time I'm in the area. Mines can be extremely dangerous though, mainly because of the possibility of bad air. You need to at least have an oxygen level meter with you. I don't own one and they are expensive. If it's a coal mine, even an oxygen level meter isn't enough; you also need something that will detect various poisonous gasses that can come out of the rocks. What type of mine is it? The best person to talk to for this stuff is Tick. He knows everything about mines. I went exploring in some iron mines with him once and it was great fun but it was easily the most physically demanding location I've ever done, and it's up there among some of the riskiest too, imo. Mines are rough. Plan this well and be prepared.

| | | Thanks for all the information everyone, it was a lot of help. I still plan on making this trip soon. As to what type of mine this is: it's a mine where they once harvested tungsten for the consumption of the masses. Lot's of cool old buildings and equipment still around too, not mention a big lake with a cool view and the such.
