1. Remembering to charge the camera batteries, but forgetting to charge the batteries in the external flash.

2. Parking too close to a building that was being watched by the police for scrappers. Got off light, but still.

3. Not bringing TP into a building I was planning on exploring all day. Had to wipe with old crumbling newspapers, not fun. It probably said Daily Journal on my butt hole for days.

4. Wearing a mask I wasn't sure was rated for dust AND asbestos. I don't know if the building actually had asbestos, but I still wanted to be safe.

5. Tripping over a buried wire into a cactus in the middle of the summer. Itched for days.

6. Picked up something interesting that happened to have a white skiney spider on the other side. Got bit, my finger burned, then my hand went numb. Luckily everything returned to normal a couple of hours later, but I was pretty nervous.

7. Parking, parking, parking... doh! Weaseling your way out of security sucks.

8. As many have said, not exploring while I had the chance before something was demoed. All well.

I'm sure there will be more. As long as you learn from your mistakes, it's not a total loss.

Exploring an active stadium during a blizzard....alone.
(actually, the blizzard saved me)

I parked on the other side of the road from the stadium, and then hiked through knee deep snow across the half mile parking lot to the stadium. I had my tripod on my back and my point and shoot in my pocket. The blizzard was rather fierce, but it didn't really bother me. The front gates of the stadium were about 20 feet tall, so I decided to find a better way around the back. there was a small fence in the back, which I easily ascended.

Once in the stadium, I proceeded to climb on top of the press box, and shoot a panorama of the city during the blizzard. After that, I climbed the scoreboard and large broadcasting screen. Then the field caught my eye.

The stadium walls blocked out the wind of the storm around the stadium. The whole field was under a blanket of perfect tranquility, silence, and darkness, with snow falling lazily. With the soft crunch of snow under my boots as the only sound, I ventured out into the middle of the field. I just stood there, closed my eyes, and took the whole scene in.

That's when the loudest alarm I have ever heard in my life exploded all around me, and all the stadium lights flashed on.

I stood in the middle of field for a terrifying moment, glued in place, as adrenaline pumped out to every corner of my unsuspecting body. Fight or Flight kicked in, and I started running as fast as I could in full snow gear.

I don't remember quite how I got to the front wall of the stadium, but I vividly remember jumping off a good 15 foot drop into a snowdrift. I spotted a "SECURITY CAMERAS IN USE" sign, but didn't think much of it at the time.

I then legged it across the half mile wide parking lot, and entered the neighborhood on the other side of the road (far away from where I had parked).
I took a meandering circular path back to my car, and then approached it from the opposite way of which I had come.

As I walked up to my car, I saw three police cars at the gate to the parking lot. Two of them had their spotlights scanning the parking lot, and the third officer was walking towards the stadium.

I got into my car as calmly as I could, and drove off. I guess I was approaching from the opposite way, so they didn't think much of me. As I drove off, I saw two police cars at each of the remaining two gates.

I had to thank the blizzard for helping me get away. The road was so icy that any car couldn't drive over about 20 mph without spinning out. This probably at least doubled their response time.

I went back two weeks later to retrieve my tripod, which I dropped as I fell into the snowdrift. Nobody has called me, so I guess a distinguishable figure wasn't caught on camera.

I still get chills when I get near that stadium.

My biggest mistake happened this past weekend when I went to go check out a paper mill. I got there before my friend did and decided to drive in around the mill itself. I unfortunately ran into a cop and he stopped me, asked what I was doing there, and ran my license and my plates. Scared the shit out of me, but I wasn't prosecuted. Just said I was lost and kindly asked him for directions back to the highway.

Was looking at an abandonment and noticed a trail going into the trees.
Found a abandoned campsite there (gun shells all over the ground)
Kept folowing the trail.
Saw a deer feeder.
Saw a deer sniper pos. (for hittin deer, not the other way around)
Walked to deer feeder.
Heard a click click click
noticed camera strapped to tree
opened camera
removed sd card
plugged said card into my camera
deleted all "increminating" pics
saw a few deer in the pics, mostly raccoons.
replaced card
closed box
left.

So i'm just pokeing around, are you gona do anything about it.

that doesnt sound like a mistake at all... it sounds like damn fine judgment.

Wouldnt it be strange if you set one of those up in the woods, and when you came back and checked it was inexplicably full of porn?

Parking in front of a location without scouting it first; police came down to say hi- there was an active site next door! Got lucky.

Not knowing for sure what the outside of my locale looks like-- i almost walked into an alarmed building. Whoops!

I tried to make my way into a locale I knew very, very well without a flashlight once (I forgot it and knew there was enough light on the main floor) and hit my head against one of the huge overhead pipes. Thankfully it was just a stupidity moment of forgetting the clearance and not ducking enough, rather than something worse!

I and two other people dropped into a steam network. Most of the lights on the overhead brackets were inactive, and the ceiling was right around 6'. These are the type of bulb socket with a wire cage guarding the bulb. Through the course of our explorations of it, we passed through one section of tunnel three times. Each of us hit his head on that light - I got the worst of it on the way out. I forgot which way I was going down the tunnel until I saw the steam plant ahead, then everything was too bright and blurry. Good thing we were headed out!

Then I drove myself and the other two guys home.

Running from the cops for about 1/4 mile in a brush-filled field covered by 2 feet of snow while carrying all my gear.

I made it. And then I pretty much instantly became sick for about a week after that. My lungs were a mess after that.

I am an adrenaline junkie. That sounds like a damn good time. But i got pneumonia at Parris island and had to continue training. so i know how much it sucks.

i have to say though. My biggest mistake will and will probably always be making a bad judgement call, and bringing some-one i should not have. Who later goes in with an axe and thinks its funny to demolish what you found so beautiful. OR comes back with his under-age friends and has a drinking party. Bringing Further heat to a building. I dont know about you guys. But it ruins my good time when i run into other people exploring the same place. Especially unfriendly assholes.

Man can i ever relate to that one. At least you had other people with ya! I tend to explore alone, and need to remember to stop and let my eyes adjust to the darkness first, rather than just running straight in! Thank goodness you all came out the other side ok.

I *do* need to remember to get my tetanus shot at the doctor next month, though.... never had one.
