| | | Marmora Open Pit Mine, near Marmora, On < on 3/21/2009 6:51 AM >
| | | A week or so ago, I was up near Havelock, and decided to trek over to the abandoned mine in Marmora. I ventured past an opening in the fence to get better shots of some of the structures on the property.. Here's the results:

| | | Cool shot! I didn't have the b#lls to climb up the elevator or risk getting caught. Didn't know if the area is patrolled. Another friend of mine told me that in the summer, kids go diving from the lower ledge into the 400 feet deep pool of clear blue water! My van has huge lettering on it of my own company, and it was the only vehicle sitting in the parking lot, at 4:30pm, so... I didn't venture in too far past all the NT signs. I may get up more nerve if I'm up there in someone else's car, but it looked like a cool place to explore. Anyone gone into the main building or the shop building, near the power step-down transformers?

| | | I didn't have the balls to climb it either. It looks all weak and like you would fall through. So old and rusty. Marmora was the first abandoned place I ever visited. It was a good time!

| | | So, does anyone know if it's patrolled at all, by anyone other than the local constabulatory?

| | | Marmora is really great, I've been a few times. It looks like your on a foreign planet.

| | | Nobody patrols there. There is even a nice lookout point where you can see it all.
Here is one of my pics.

| | | Actually they do patrol. They don't really care if you're there though, so long as you're not drinking/drugging/smashing/tearing shit up. I've talked to the guy a couple times over the years, he's cool. They actually turn a blind eye to local kids camping at the bottom of the pit in the summer too, so don't cause trouble or run away when the guy in the red pickup pulls up, and everyone will be happy. Side note: apparently the guys in the active pit to the southwest can see photographers, with the binoculars they carry, and apparently this is a very popular spot for amateur hour nude photo shoots. The guy was hoping I had a naked girl with me, had to disappoint him on that count.

Just admit it, you save the nude girl shoots for the brickworks!

| | | Brickworks is played out. I'm an original yo, it's all about Bunge and St. Clemmen's Anglican Church. HDR too. Shit, I just gave out my two most guarded locations....

| | | Marmora is a great place! When I was there I had the place to myself, except for a few people 4 wheeling on the far ridge. I really enjoyed exploring it. Here is one of my pics.

| | | Before Armbro (now Aecon) fenced up the rail lines, I used to go four wheeling to the area and camp or just walk around exploring. Interesting bit of history for my family, my grandfather and my father worked at the mine before the pit started to fill with water. It been years since I explored the area. I'm going to try and go out this year and explore some with my wife.

Hmm, how do you know the buildings contain asbestos, when you don't know where this is? Marmora is east of Havelock. http://www.ontario...armora/marmora.asp
