Documenting my trips

These are just to document my trips, and aren't really meant to be artsy (nor are they well composed! ) Taken on a point and click Kodak EasyShare 1013. But I'm posting them here, where they're more on subject than where they were posted originally (http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=64458)

I WENT! whoop... anyways, pics:

Lots of junk in this drain, there were several piles of rocks and bricks as well

A side line with a sexy yellow mineral deposit/bacterial colony (goes great on toast!)

BIG junction room probably 8' x 10' and 12' tall, the big CMP is a good 6.5' - 7' in diameter and the small one is probably 3'

Looking inside the small CMP

Water flowing out of the big CMP

The way back out

Found the inflow too, now I just need to see what's in between!

----------

Went back today and got stopped just short of my goal! The water was too high for me to navigate without rubber boots, and was cold as balls!

Managed to scramble up into the CMP (after several failed attempts) and realized that I have NO ninja skills! and these damned metal pipes are SLIPPERY! no one ever tells you that till you nearly fall into some nasty pipe water! Because of it being so slick and me not having rubber boots I had to straddle the water and duck-walk the rest of the trip

Looking back at the large chamber from before

This little side line was dumping water into the main line making for a tricky get-around what with me duck-walking and that portion of the pipe being so slick.

Thought this was graffiti but when I got there it seems more like it was meant to be there (and it was)

some build-up on the bottom of the drain

Found a rickety old ladder leading up to a wet side line and a solid manhole cover.

There was an interesting side line coming in with big, scary bolts coming through the walls. Turns out it was a manhole chamber! Solid lid and a leak...

The pipe suddenly shrinks and it is apparent there is concrete on the outside of the line.

Huh, you don't say....

this narrower section of pipe has several other small pipes hanging from the ceiling and poking up from the floor

Squat little side pipe

This section of line looks really old, there is rust on the walls, and the seams are rusted and broken. it also has rocks ALL OVER the bottom, no clue where they came from, but some are fairly large.

This is where I was foiled! the water got deep and the rocks ran out, I wasn't about to walk through that water without rubber boots so I was forced to turn back. Just outside the range of the flash, about 20 feet from here was my goal for today: a second chamber with light coming in from above, a ladder, several side-lines, and a small slide (YAY! a new feature!)

Enjoy, and please leave comments, good bad, what-have-you

Good job and congrats on a pretty successful exploration! I know how that cold water is... it can really be killer. I hope you enjoyed yourself. I find that exploring means constantly rethinking what I've packed. It's all a learning experience that makes it more fun in the future.

Keep it up!

Me goin' legit would be like JarJar on speech therapy.

Went back today with a buddy and finished this bad-boy off!

Tried out some 'po-man's waders, Trash bags and rubber bands

After donning our trash bag waders we stepped into the flooded part of the drain and quickly realized it is MUCH deeper that I had thought and COLD as all get-out

They didn't work surprise, surprise lol

Looking back down the small slide at the end of the flooded section of tunnel

This chamber is the only grated manhole in the whole line

Turning around we realised that we had come (all too soon) to the infall of the drain, and as we started down the rectangular section of the drain we heard a god-awful noise that sounded like the whole drain was moaning

As we headed towards the infall of the drain we noted some interesting rust formations

SUCCESS finished off the drain and came out on the other side of the highway! Turns out the horrible sound we heard was a tractor-trailer passing overhead!

What is it with american drainers and their refusal to pay $6 for a pair of rubber boots?

Not really too interested in drains, but that small spiraled pipe got my attention! Never seen something like that before...

And there's nothing wrong with point and shoots, I myself use a GE A730.

Get some boots, they're better. If you don't want boots, here's my recipe for temp-o-waders:

4 trash bags per person. Thicker/sturdier is better.
1 60' roll of duct tape per 6-10 legs.

Pull a doubled set of bags onto each leg, tape the top around your thigh and then tape it to your pants (or hold it up some other way!)

A few tape bands around your calf and ankle help against snagging. But be SURE to tape all over your shoe. Temp-o-waders fail when they get little teensy rips from concrete and rocks. Duct tape is much tougher, so you gotta cover your shoe bottom, toe, and heel.

Good to go, for an unknown time; probably less than a half hour. Walk softly!

Which one? this one?

yeah, i didnt figure these wader's would hold up but id hope theyd be able to make the short trip across the water, but they tore pretty soon because of the rocks, and then the water was much deeper than i expected and started flooding in over the top of the bags, but my feet were already wet so i said f*ckit and went across anyway

Cool pics! Looks like we did pretty much the same thing, just documented our trips with no artistic merit. :]

This makes me want to go draining too. You've got a lot of corrugated pipe in that drain, is that normal around where you live? Everything around here is concrete; mostly RCP, but some boxes too. Actually, in some of the smaller tunnels there's that weird plastic compound, but yeah.

But yeah, good stuff! Hope to see more from you sometime.

And this drain seems a lot nicer than my first drain...about half a mile of crawling through these.

of the drains ive been through this is the only one ive found with any metal pipe at all, so it was interesting to not only have a HUGE pipe (which is VERY good on my back ;)) and to have changes in materials, and shape rather than just RCP,RCP, Smaller RCP... blah blah blah (The slide was fun too! and bigger than i had thought)

Very nice, I enjoyed seeing your pics of your adventures. So what they are not artsy or whatever people think they should be.

What I liked even more is the fact you did not ask the normal questions anyone can find answers to around here like what should I wear. You probably read them but did what most of us do when we get the bug. Screw it! just do what I can with what I have. If that does not work, try something else and hit it again.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.
