Great pics especially the movies. The Kidnappers, ironically I actually saw that a few years back during late nights. LoL! Anyways, seems to be near the stradford area, cause I saw one of the advertisings for the Shakespear festival.

The Desk drawyer, I am not a proffessional, but I think it is a desk, but that hood allowed one to cover their work for security purposes, so no one can see what they were working on, or disturbed their work should be some kind of locking mechinisim somewhere.

I had one of these at my old public school in greade 1 or 2 i think. Can't exactly remember. But in grade 3 our school finally got the new desks on what students use now, table top on the top and storage compartment on the bottom.

I'm still thinking desk. its too short length wise to be a piano, and if it were a piano then the rolling part would only be over the keys, and not the whole structure pretty much. I tried to google it, but nothing turned up. Thanks for the extra pictures!

i talked to a furniture expert that i know, she mentioned that it may be a style of "secretary desk". most of the examples i found of that type of desk had that flat drop-front type of opening. heres a less weathered example, with the solid cover similar to the one you found.

could just be a case of naming conventions, whats roll top in one area is a secretary desk in another. there seems to be quite a few styles of this type of desk, according to google images.

based on her input, i did a bit more looking around on google, and found this:

http://en.wikipedi...wiki/Cylinder_desk

the description here seems to match up quite a bit better with the physical properties in your pics.

she also mentioned that the desk is worth saving, if you are so inclined.

If you recover it, does that not break the UE Kudo? Explore and explore, and leave everything as it was for others to discover.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. The property, house and contents do not belong to me. "Recover" in these circumstances reads "steal" to me. Besides, as I said earlier in this thread, to remove anything would be diminishing the pleasure of subsequent explorers. Don't want to do that. Would make me no better than a spray-painting vandal.

But I do love a good puzzle and would like to identify (once and for all) the piece of furniture. I'm thinking I may have to go back and take a much closer look at it (with some good close-ups for the rest of you). Might get lucky and find a manufacturer's mark somewhere.

Unless you contact the owner or something and let them know that you want it. And offer something for it in exchange.

But otherwise leave it alone for others to see.

Looking forward to seeing it!! But the suspense might kill me... hasn't enough snow melted this week to make the hike do-able now? (Instant gratification always required *grin*)

The desk-y type thing is what's left of an old reed organ (also called parlor organ or pump organ). They were essentially an accordian with a less portable housing. A bunch of air-driven brass reeds you turned on and off by pressing keys.

They sounded great in 1890, but when electronic organs came along, people didn't want to listen to the buzzing kazoos anymore. On the other hand, an ornate carved case would be a shame to use as firewood. The solution was to rip out the keyboards, bellows, pedals, etc, and convert the case into a makeshift desk or sideboard. You'll see them in antique shops quite often.

What gives it away as being a reed organ conversion is the hole at the bottom where your feet would go. Normal desks have holes big enough to get your knees under. Secretary desks are solid toe-stubbers all the way to the floor, with a fold-out writing surface so you don't sit hunched way over to reach the paper. The hole in this item is the correct size to have contained the 2 pedals used to pump the bellows.

More info on reed/pump/parlor organs:

Fritz Gellerman literally wrote the book: http://reedorgan.info

Jim Tyler's a master restorer: http://www.reedorganman.com

Excellent pics, BTW. If you do wind up going back, I'd love to see more of this place!

You nailed it!!!! Thank you Maybe!!
I went through some of the references you supplied and found that this case looks very much like it used to be a Mason & Hamlin model 73 or 74. The catalogue drawing of the open organ (model #73)shows very similar scroll work on the lower front of the case and similar looking details on the side of the case. The drawing of model 74 shows a closed lid... the details of the upper scroll work are visible and look very much the same. Comparison photos below...

Maybe, you asked to see more... I took nearly 200 pics on that visit, don't need to go back to show more of the place. Here are some I didn't post before, including some more of the newspaper.

ahhh i see you found my old friend.

it's one of my favourite spots in this area, if the land ever goes
up for sale i'd love to buy it... it has the best view, ever.

beware of summer explorations though, when my brother and i came out of the house last time we were there, our vehicle was surrounded by cows, they were everywhere! lol. but the trees out front have some tasty wild grapes.

Neat find!
Did you say one of the walls is separating from the rest of the house?

Yeah, the back of the house seemed to be separating from the front. in the first set of pics, look at #14. It is a shot down the stairs from the second floor. Behind the bedsprings on the stairs you can see daylight through a big crack up the wall in the corner. The brick facing was also separating from the underlying clapboard and falling off much of the house as seen in most of the exterior shots.

I can't believe that this house has been allowed to continue standing here. With this view, in this neighbourhood... it should have been a McMansion long ago! I'm sure there must have been offers made... perhaps it is tied up in probate? Or perhaps the current owners aren't impressed by large sums of cash? **Gasp!**

well basically i think it comes down to the fact that the farm land is worth more by using it for crops, which they still do in the warmer months. someone still goes to the trouble of baling the hay and piling it inside the barn... and like i said they definitely still have cattle on the property. lol

but i'm glad they have left it standing, otherwise i'd never get to enjoy it as is.

Maybe the owners are waiting for some kind of rezoning, for higher-density residential, say, which might make it vastly more valuable?
