| | | Werewolves and Pluto dog dinner? Oh my! < on 2/15/2009 1:57 AM >
| | | A friend and I decided to check out a place she spotted a couple of weeks earlier. It was set a long way back from the road at the top of (what turned out to be) a very large hill. The snow was very deep, so we strapped on our snowshoes, slung our gear over our shoulders and started climbing. The snow was not only deep, it was soft... so soft I was sinking to my knees even with the snowshoes on! It seemed to take forever to get up to the house (did I mention that the hill was steep and that it was into the wind?) but when we got there, we were rewarded with this:
The brick facing was coming off large parts of the house, but what remained was very ornate. Although it was snowing a bit, you can see the great view the owners of this old house had in a couple of the shots.
Moving inside, the first thing I noticed was that the basement wall must have been crumbling, because the the floor in the entrance was weak with large holes in it. The last few places I've been in recently have been like this... I'm starting to get a little cocky about just jumping the holes and moving on... gonna be trouble one of these days. In the first room I saw what looked to be the shell of a player piano. It had a roll-top, but none of the piano parts remained.
I am always amazed at how new the ceramic doorknobs look! I took a look in the basement, but other than the collapsing foundation wall, it was empty. Time to check out the second floor. There were tons of swallow nests on this level... it must be a busy and noisy place in the spring. Great textures on the walls, great views out the windows and really interesting architecture in the little area at the top of the stairs. In the shot looking back down the stairs you can see daylight where the back of the house is separating from the front.
On the way out of the house I thought I saw a bottle on the top shelf of the cold storage room. Reaching for it (I couldn't see what I was reaching for) I grabbed not the bottle, but a piece of Toronto Star dated June 12 1954. I took it out to the front room (more light) and took some shots of it to share with you. Things not to miss include: werewolves in the Laurentians, Pluto dog dinner, Yvonne De Carlo in a movie NOT as Morticia (or was she on the Munsters??), Wilf Carter playing the Palace Pier on Lakeshore and best of all - Dottie Decorates! It was a different time...

| | | what a great set! I especially love the door knobs. I think the "piano" is actually a type of old desk that just has a rolling top. You could sit and write and keep all your papers and inks+pens, then roll the top down to cover it and make it look tidy. Either way, nice find!
Sorry, what was that you were saying about forever alone? |

| | | Fantastic find!!! I wish we had houses like that around here, but if we do, I've never seen them. Great shots. It must have been well worth the hike up the hill.

I thought that at first too, but there were no shelves, no drawers, a large footwell and a big empty space in behind. And some metal tracks on what should have been the writing surface. It is a bit of a puzzle.

No, I will move the odd thing, but take nothing... not even the paper. I can't deny the next explorer the pleasure of finding it!!

Now I'm not so sure I know what this was. Here are some better shots of this odd piece of furniture. Anyone know what this was?

| | | great pic! that 'desk' is really unusual. could it be a sideboard or some other part of a dining set? the house design looks pretty similar to other houses of this era that ive been to, was it in what could have considered to be a dining area or living/sitting room? Looks like a desk for writing at, the curved part could be covered by a retractable sliding thing on some models.

I'm still thinking desk. its too short length wise to be a piano, and if it were a piano then the rolling part would only be over the keys, and not the whole structure pretty much. I tried to google it, but nothing turned up. Thanks for the extra pictures!

| | | I think it might be a spinet organ (May have spelled that wrong), that's been converted into a desk... my parents had one in their antique store nearly indentical to it. Either way... it's a nice piece.
