Depending on where i am when i see the cops is when i decide if i should run/hide or just give myself up. If i notice the cop before he notices me, then of course im just going to duck down and hide or run away. But if i come walking out of a building and hes like 10 feet away from me, i most likely wont run. I was somewhere today and saw security driving around but i saw him first so i just laid down and when he did his circle and drove off i just stood up and kept moving. So depends on the situation if you should run/hide or give up.

Why? Just pretend to be drunk; you will get a ride back to *your* dorm, for free.
You are so plastered you don't know where you are... Most campus police would rather drive your drunk ass back to a dorm than a cell.

I never thought of that... then again, drinking is banned on my campus, so it probably wouldn't go over that well. Better than being caught breaking into buildings though, so I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.

Is drinking banned or is being drunk banned?

Because the college I'm going to is a "Dry Campus" but there are multiple off campus bars one is literally next door to my friends dorm. You can be as drunk as you want, as long as the booze is IN you and not ON you, they don't care.

And it's a liberal arts college; anything you do is a slap on the wrist. I'm probably going to visit him tomorrow (he went back after break today, but I have work) and there are a few storm drains I want to go back and photograph. There is a new construction we've already been in, on campus. Mill ruins within walking distance (they demo'd / renovated the rest). And I won't attempt the steam tunnels until I'm a student there.

"Go all the way or walk away"

Both. Which just means drinking is done in private and hidden.

The steam tunnels sound good! Just make sure they don't have a trap room like some of them have started putting in, with a telephone in the middle and locking doors on each end.

I should note how important it is to know the person you are exploring with and know what the "Plan" is, should you become separated OR what the other persons plan is should they be spotted.

True, but often the fun of exploring overshadows the thoughts of what to do if someone is spotted. In my regular group, if you're spotted, do what you want to do....but don't give up the group.

For myself; I dont run from anyone, especially the police. I have found that most part , the police will cut you a break, that is, unless you have spray cans or are robbing the place, thats pretty cut and dry..your done.

True, but also it really does depend on where you are exploring. Some hick building in the country might elicit a different response than an inner city building, let's say. Also, what if you don't know if it's the cops? Or what if the place you are exploring is very secure (ie, you go to prison if caught?) the risks of getting caught in these places are likely going to make you think twice about putting your hands up instead of cheesing it.

If you run, you are provoking a response, should you get caught, you will be in for more reprise, thats first hand knowledge.
True for low-risk places where no one really, truly cares you are there. But cops do like to make "examples" out of people sometimes. Cops here in California can be more lax than other states I've been in. Especially Michigan.

On the other hand, how do you deal with squatters? I really havent had any incidents of running into squatters. I would imagine that it varies in CA vs the US.

I have a friend who was homeless in CA, in Toronto, for quite a long time. The police would go and overturn their tents in the middle of winter, ruining their little towns. From the stories he's told me there isn't much difference between homeless people in the US or CA. Homeless people I encounter are usually in their own little world, and you just don't engage them and watch your back. If they engage you, the game changes - if they want you to leave, leave. If they want cigarettes or whatever, give it if you have it, and be honest if you don't...tell them you're there to take pictures and ask if it'd be okay. If not, leave. The most harm that has come to me from homeless people is them asking me to take pictures of them, or to buy drugs from them or share their beer (ew!)...

I would be interested in your thoughts.

I am a fan of the lie down and wait tactic. It has worked for me before and I have no clue how the guy didn't see me! But he was a cop, not security (I think? can't remember for sure).
