| | Trespassing and getting getting caught/spotted to run or not? < on 1/7/2009 9:02 PM >
| | | Well, this is my first post to this site. I have been in my share of buildings prior and have many interesting experiences. I should note how important it is to know the person you are exploring with and know what the "Plan" is, should you become separated OR what the other persons plan is should they be spotted. I was just curious what others think or do in these scenarios. For myself; I dont run from anyone, especially the police. I have found that most part , the police will cut you a break, that is, unless you have spray cans or are robbing the place, thats pretty cut and dry..your done. If you run, you are provoking a response, should you get caught, you will be in for more reprise, thats first hand knowledge. On the other hand, how do you deal with squatters? I really havent had any incidents of running into squatters. I would imagine that it varies in CA vs the US. I would be interested in your thoughts.

| | | May I suggest this get moved to the rookie forum? Everything is dependent on the situation at hand. There's no 'right' answer. As for squatters, there's a squillion posts out there on them. Typical consensus seems to be they don't need to be 'dealt with'. Just respected and ignored.
Get down, girl, go 'head, get down. |

| | | Depends who catches you, then you decide if you should run or not. And most of the time when ive ran into people hanging out at these places i havent had any problems. They just kinda look at you like you have 10 heads.

| | | If you know you can get away, I'd say always run. But if you have any doubts, then stay, be polite, and deal with it. You'll have much better luck with the authorities if you don't give them a hard time, or any reason to believe you were doing anything other than taking pictures.

| | | Indeed. Rookie forum stuff. Indeed, there are a million plus posts about squatters. I have read through them (Well, some of them). For the most part, it does matter by the situation. I appreciate those who took a second to respond.

| | | It's been covered before, and it'll be covered again. I never run, but I do often walk away, taking my chances that they won't have the balls to physically detain me. It works in Korea, at least.

| | | As others have said, depends on the situation. There has been times when I have been within feet of security and been clocked and I have legged it. Other times I have been seen in the distance and given myself up simply because I didn't feel getting away was either in my best interests or doable at the time for whatever reason. I can assure you, if I explore anything over here, there is no way I am stopping until the cuffs are on and the truncheon is lodged up my arse. I don't trust the police over here to help me so I certainly don't trust them to play by the book if they are after me. [last edit 1/8/2009 2:21 PM by Azubi.UK - edited 1 times]

| | | What is a squatter ? I would always run if I was seen. I was on a roof once and a security saw me. I along with others ran into the bush and were laying down until he left. Then we got up and went back to where we entered the place.

College security. Always run, as they don't have to do any due-process stuff, and are effectively their own extra-judicial court system using their own rules, but have very limited authority off the college campus. That said, I have wandered up to someone and mumbled something about my coat and wandered off (at 4am in a locked up building), but if that had tried to follow I would have put on my golden nikes and went for it. As I have on numerous other occasions. If you're gonna run... just be sure you can get away.

True, especially if it turns into a car chase, or an overwhelming numbers situation. The only time I ever ran from cops I cut through the woods to where I had my bike hidden, and then took a trail a mile to a friends house. The last thing you want is a drawn out situation where you're advantage: surprise, mobility, planning - disappears to favor their strengths: numbers, endurance, practice, helicopters.

| | | only time i've ever run (or really needed to) was when me and another user set off a construction site alarm on a college campus. i ran because it was damn loud and scared the hell out of me. however i think if you're just wandering around a non-questionable place (i.e. no place important that might press charges) clearing just looking or taking pictures i'd say you should probly not run.

| | | Construction sites will likely bring with it charges if caught. Running will net you far worse charges many times then the initial crime it's self if it's of a petty nature.

You better check. Some are sworn peace officers. Some state universities have the state police on campus too and remain in a close radio contact with security.

Why? Just pretend to be drunk; you will get a ride back to *your* dorm, for free. You are so plastered you don't know where you are... Most campus police would rather drive your drunk ass back to a dorm than a cell. This would be my order of preference. 1. Hide, most police/security won't risk themselves to chase you into a building. 2. Social Engineer. Talk your way out of it. Or talk your way into a lesser charge. 3. Run. If it is guaranteed jail time if you are caught; better to not be caught. The charges will be more severe, but if you are already risking jailtime; figure your odds. If there is a 50% chance you can get away, and running increases your charges 2X, your odds are about even. If I was caught trespassing on say federal property near an adjacent airbase. I'd run on foot, taking advantage of the "restricted airspace" which prevents civilian air support (i.e. news chopper). Whatever you do, do not let them get your license plate. Park far away. Get to a public place. Change your clothes. Ditch your gear if you have to. Buying another respirator or boots or gloves or whatever won't be too much of a hassle. Delete the pictures on your SD card. Do not use card again until you use recovery software. Be careful where you post those pictures.
