Thank you for your response. I really like my school and I am proud of it. My father bought it back in Sept 1978, about one year after the school closed. We had a lot of fun with this school. Unfortunately, it has gone down hill. My father was very ill and could not keep up with it. He died about three years ago and it is up to me to keep it going. I work two jobs which gives me very little time to make improvements on it. I have an obnoxious neighbor who is determined that I am going to knock the building down. I plan to keep the building standing as long as possible.

@Ashlee-

Well, I, for one, would never go into a building that I knew was someone's personal property. I have a strict policy about only exploring institutional property- rarely do governments and corporations have emotional ties to the places they leave to rot.

Now, I'm not trying to get smart with you, but am genuinely curious-
You gave consent to the person who took these, both to enter the building, to take the pictures, and to enter them into a contest. She generously shared her winnings with you. How is this forum any worse than a photo contest? I just want to understand where you're coming from.

I did not give her permission to be in my building nor to take photographs of it. She entered it knowing that it was privately owned and snapped over 20 pictures inside my building. I called the sheriff once I found out about it from her grandmother(the neighbor who wants my building knocked down). The only reason she shared the winnings with me was because she did not want to be prosecuted.

Ah. Well, I think your position is very understandable, then!

Personally, I think you're doing a great service trying to save this building, even with modest resources at your disposal. Thank you for that.

My humble opinion, though, is that you shouldn't have to do it alone! There are a lot of people out there who love old places like this, and would be happy to lend a hand. Maybe you could get a hold of a local historical society or similar group. Pictures and stories can be a strong voice for preservation.

If it's kept a secret, then the only ones who know about it will be your demolition-happy neighbor. Many more buildings are ultimately destroyed due to vocal neighbors complaining of an "eye-sore" than due to photographers and other people who care about the history and beauty of the place.

Good luck with it, and I hope you can keep it up for years to come!

The community is not very supportive in this rural area. The school is several miles from town and no one is interested in preserving it. They want to knock it down and build new houses out here. It is all about appearances here.

Ashlee - most explorers won't enter a building unless there's already a way in. Are all of the doors closed and locked? Also, that doesn't look like it's your home. While I can see why you might be upset that someone went on the grounds of your property, was the property damaged by their passing? Have you ever driven through a farmer's field despite that there were no trespassing signs? Do you consider that extremely different?

I have "no trespassing" signs posted on the doors. The girl even took a picture of one of them. Her family knows this is private property and has been for over 30 years. It is not like driving across a farm field. It is someone clearly trespassing. What gives you the right to go through my building even if it is unlocked? I like to have access to my building, but now I have to make it like Fort Knox to keep snoopy people out. What right do you have to take photos and put them on the internet?? This is an invasion of privacy. In fact, these photos were to be removed from the internet. This was part of the agreement with the sheriff's dept. in order not to prosecute this granddaughter. She just moved them to a different web site. I recognize one of the people commenting as the granddaughter. She is using one of her photos from her Flickr site.

It would not matter whether you had a hundred "No Trespassing" signs and every door properly secured someone would push their way in. If someone wants in they will make a way. I have had doors kicked in and windows broken out. This is why I am so HOSTILE toward people invading my property.

EatsTooMuchJam, not helping.

Truthfully, Ashlee is in the right, here.
In this hobby, we often take advantage of the fact that the owners of these buildings really don't care about them. Unfortunately, every once in a while, we run into an owner who DOES care, and I think we should respect that.

If my father had been awesome enough to buy an old school just for the fun of it, if I had grown up playing there, and was now overwhelmed with the effort of just trying to keep it standing, I think I would also be pretty pissed- especially if there had been a lot of vandalism in the past.

Even though most members of this forum wouldn't vandalize or damage a site like this, a lot of people don't see the difference between explorers and the ne'er-do-wells, door-kickers and window-breakers.

That's why I think we need to try a little harder to be upstanding in these situations. That way, in the future, maybe the few owners out there who actually DO care might be a little more open to our visits.

Just my $0.02

ashlee, look at the locations being explored on this website. the truth of the matter is that probably none of them are really 'abandoned' in the literal and legal sense of the word. they are almost all owned by somebody. this web site stands as testament to a fact of human nature - be it for better or worse - that curious people want to explore the seemingly derelict aspects of their environment. it is true that you could make it like fort knox yet still not keep out everybody. so if somebody entered simply to take some photos - award-winning photos at that - and did no harm, then i'm sure it was done with no ill-intent toward you. the fact that they shared their prize money with you indicates to me that they recognize and respect your ownership and they mean you no disrespect.

this seems a simple case of curiosity with a touch of artistic endeavor. surely there is room in your heart to understand and forgive a case of creative curiosity - especially when it yields such beautiful photos of a place you clearly hold dear.

The fact of the matter is the school is my private property. Curiosity does not give a person a legitimate reason to enter my building. The girl knew this was private property. I suspect her 90 year old grandmother put her up to it and may have been in my school, too. My father and her grandmother never got along. This woman could never grasp the concept of boundaries. She was constantly shoving her views down the throats of other people. She felt she was always right. My father would not take crap from her. Now that my father has passed away she feels that she can do what she pleases on my property. I totally despise this woman and will not take crap from her either. She will learn to stay off my property or she can spend some time pushing her squeaky walker around the Delaware County jail. She can boss around the drunks there.

It sounds like this is more of a personal spat than anything else.
It's a shame you've come to misinterpret the nature of our hobby and those of us who partake in it. Very few of us are the "kick in the door and break the windows" type. We tend to use methods that do not damage the building or any of its contents, and frown upon such behaviour.

Your school has been photographed to preserve it's history, beauty and the stories within it - that's the fact of the matter. It is a gorgeous building with astounding architectural features and a great deal of historical value.

I'm sorry you're so protective and private of something that you should be very proud to show off.
