You also have a good point about the simple fact about our interaction with the 5-0. I believe that most cops know the difference between somebody with a camera and some curiosity than a tagger with a bag full of spray paint and a scrapper with a crowbar. Every situation where I've been greeted by the cops leaving an abandonment(only a few) turns out when the cops searched my backpack and found my camera gear and nothing else their attitudes changed right away. I often chuckle when I read threads on the rookie forum about the best ways to escape the cops. Of course your going to run into your occasional dickhead(no offense guy from Scotland) but that's just a fact of life.

Yea, your probably right. I agree that they are just regular joe's like you and me. I think my nervousness stems from my younger days of raising hell. I guess if I knew more cops on a personal level I would probably feel more comfortable.

yeah, regular joes who are used to dealing with gun toting gangs, sketched out drug addicts, scrappers with backhoes and full arsenals, and other unpleasant things.
I know this is a terrible thing to say, but in absolute truth: If you are white they don't give you much trouble. If you are female they give you even less trouble. If you are military you get the least trouble. At least thats what I have learned from my own experiences and that of others I know.
Now the security in the Packard area you have to watch out for. They have been know to fire blindly into the dark if they think you are there.

We were just out at the Packard plant today, someone started throwing bricks and rocks at us from one of the upper floors.

True story: When I went out west this summer, I flew from Detroit Metro. In the parking structure, near the walkway into the terminal was an old man with his pants around his ankles, furiously masturbating as people walked by. No one said anything, they just kept walking.
I love that city. It's like walking through downtown Sarajevo just after the war.

Not to defend Detroit too much, but Detroit Metro Airport is located in the city of Romulus, probably about 5 or 8 miles W of the Detroit border, and is owned & operated by Wayne County.
Detroit freaks don't need to masturbate -- they either pull some aluminum siding off an occupied dwelling & get a few $$ for it at a scrap metal place to be able to hire a Detroit hooker, or they simply find someone to rape.
I suspect this is true of most parts of the USA: up until the early to mid-1980s, the SE Michigan area (where Detroit is) had numerous psychiatric facilities (nicer, modern term for 'insane asylums') housing thousands of people. Michigan's were mostly shut down for budgetary reasons -- the bogus notion was that many of the people did have some sort of family around that could/should deal with them, and that it'd be cheaper for the state to dole out $$ in out-patient type social services/welfare for them than to house them in what were essentially prisons. As a result, many thousands of people with minor to major mental health issues found themselves out on the streets, trying to cope with their new 'freedom' & receiving some outpatient services & welfare funds. Over time, these sort of people tend to gravitate towards communities where they are either tolerated, or ignored, & that way they can walk around naked on the streets, etc. without the police or anyone else hassling them. These same dirty, ghetto communities (read: Detroit) also tend to have lots of abandoned structures where these people can 'live.'
Detroit PD generally doesn't mess with homeless people because they tend to be smelly with who-know-what sort of contagious diseases, lice, fleas, etc. it doesn't do any good to try to 'reason' with them, at any moment they could flip out on you & you might have to use deadly force (last I knew Detroit hadn't issued less-than-lethal weapons like TASERs to patrol officers) & then there's going to be some huge, ugly mess because you shot & killed a poor homeless person, and then even if you were willing to contaminate your patrol car by transporting the person to some sort of social-service facility, most of those places are already full from walk-ins, and pretty much none accept anyone who is
drunk or beligerent. So as sad as it sounds, the po-po most often will completely ignore or just yell at over their cruiser's PA system some homeless-looking guy walking into or out of an abandoned building, whereas they can be ready, willing & able to stop one of you fairly young, white people going in/out of that same structure. A homeless guy going in/out of an abandoned place in Detroit is not suspicious. Someone that doesn't look homeless doing the same thing is suspicious, & it's just a matter or whether or not the officers are on the way to a higher-priority call, ready to go off-duty, or have been told to selectively enforce N-T laws/ordinances in certain areas.

Btw this place in highland park was hardly worth it the raw sewage in the basement kinda spoiled the fun as did the extremly dangerous nieghborhood.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but have any of you locals looked into the old Cass Tech High School? The original section I guess dates back to the 1920s or earlier & is abandoned, awaiting demolition. There is a newer 'wing' to it that is now used at the school.

The locals generally dont take new people. it takes time to earn their trust. understandably. Just go on your own. that place isnt too unsafe in comparison to other detroit locations.

quite the contrary. it is the hottest new scrapping spot downtown.
even scrappers have been robbed at gunpoint by other scrappers while trying to leave the blg with their haul.
theyre in there night & day hacking it to pieces...a school that deserves a historical marker. but that would only get stolen too.
