They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn! |

| | | The Associated Press Thu May 15, 6:47 PM ET CONFLUENCE, Pa. - Two Somerset County men are charged with trying to steal live power lines that were still attached to a transformer and utility poles. ADVERTISEMENT Police said Kevin Lee Lytle, 27, and Daniel Jay Basinger, 24, both of Confluence, were shocked during the theft attempt on May 3 in Lower Turkeyfoot Township. Both were charged Wednesday, but only Basinger was well enough to attend his arraignment on the attempted theft charge. Police say the incident disrupted power to area residences for about five hours. Penelec Power Co. owns the lines which suffered $1,500 damage. The Associated Press could not immediately reach either man for comment.

| | | There was a recent movie made about a local scrapper. He explains how he spent years ripping things apart, and then he complains about vandals/bums breaking things (a turned-over sofa). We even see him breaking a pipe to let the water come out full speed - and I am not sure it was for him to drink. Anyway, I was wondering if I was the only one in the theater catching the irony. Plus the place is now ridden with free-flying asbestos and I can't help thinking that all this did not probably help. But yes, he did make the place safer in other ways too and local UExplorers are fond of him. All this to say people always find a way to make things works in their minds... Wow. Does it say less about scrapers and more about the state of the economy and how people are getting desperate? Maybe people are simply bolder. Or very high on illegal substance.

| | | Developers pulled out of a subdivision project here in my region. Copper thieves stepped in. Half-completed houses are now completely striped of copper and any metals. Several abandonments I used to haunt are now very well secured after a rash of copper thefts. This problem has been around for years but has only been accelerated due to the spike in copper prices.

| | | Yesterday, I was in Virginia helping a friend move up to Pittsburgh. I noticed a neat looking yard sale across the street so I went and checked it out. There was a cool looking table there made out of tarnished copper. Apparently the seller used to be in the United Nations many years ago, and served in the middle east. This table, roughly 5' in diameter weighing in about 80 lbs had many hand- engraved designs and pictures in it. It was a genuine dining table from some obscure country and was about 150 years old. The poor man who was selling it said that some idiot was coming back to buy it, and melt it down. He also informed me that he was fixing up a house as a gift for his daughter who was about to get married. He had bought the copper pipes from lowes, some douchebag saw him and followed him home, came back that night and stole about $500 worth of pipe. Anybody who says scrapping is a-ok is probably one of those people who uses this site to find new places to make an illegal paycheck- Just my two cents.

Exploring if for n00bz0rz
| | Re: Scrappers <Reply # 168 on 5/18/2008 4:37 PM >
| | | I hate the idea of scrapping a building illegally. It destroys history, compromises the safety of others and the ones scrapping. It is a blight on property owners which in turn makes them more angry at people like me who intend no harm. But that being said, I am fully aware that I can do nothing about this issue without being a total hypocrite. Every time I have run into a scrapper, they all had one thing in common...the were all a whole lot worse off then I was. Most of the places that I explore that are prone to scrapping are in very poor areas. The majority of the population is hooked on hard drugs. The ones who are not on drugs still have no way to get any income other than a monthly check by the government. These people can not get better jobs because they were born in an area with horrible schools and they never got the education they need to carry on as "regular" citizens. So while most of them are content to rob people at gunpoint, sell drugs to support their addiction, or steal cars; some of them scrap for metal. I would rather deal with someone scrapping a building that 1)does not belong to me and 2) is so decayed that it is obvious that the owner(s) are stopped giving a shit about years ago; as opposed to a crack addled lunatic who wants to take my camera/car/wallet/wife/whatever with the saturday night special he stole off a dead driveby victim. Scrapping sucks, but it is not going anywhere. Like tagging in an abandonment, it will always be a part of our world.

| | | In my neck of the woods bleck teeth havin' meth heads do most of the thieving. The latest accomplishment was stealing the wires that parallel the CP Rail line in the northern portion of St. Croix county. It was literally miles of copper! A-ha! jokes on them! Apparently the the wire they stole was very specific to the rail industry: the braided wire contains about 35% steel strands mixed in with the copper strands. The people at the scrap yard recognized it right away. They all got busted. HA. Take that meth mouthers!

| | | My grandmother's house recently caught on fire to the point of it being unhabitable without reconstruction. They moved someplace else, but they are having trouble with scrappers at their old residence. We went recently, and people have knocked down walls looking for copper wiring. One came out of the house wearing lipstick. Yes it was a male. [last edit 5/24/2008 11:53 PM by bored_being - edited 1 times]

...A suspected natural gas explosion leveled a vacant house in Parsippany this afternoon sending debris flying hundreds of feet and causing part of Route 202 to be shut down for several hours. |
Reader comment:
The house exploded because someone stole the copper gas pipes. It was vacant and located right on Rt 202, an easy target. Same thing happened in Irvington a few months ago. A quick check of the property records shows that this home was foreclosed on and owned by a bank. Expect this kind of thing to keep happening people....

| | | I have noticed "demolition through neglect", and scrappers (i know a few..they are human beings...like you and me) are a very important part of this process. Some developers do no want to restore old buildings....sometimes city ordinance requires this, and scrappers are a sure fire way for them to get the building in question into such bad shape...its not worth saving! I still don't know how (some) can argue with this!!! ...WIN WIN for everybody!! (bad for explorers)
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | Scrappers are such losers; after a few good scrappings, sites look gross and the security is pumped up. There is an abandoned military office-complex near my college. Great to explore...eight stories, four wings...BUT...scrappers have ripped all the wiring from the ceilings. Now the ground is coated, literally coated, with inches of asbestos and gunk. It wet from the rain because the windows are all either broken, or gone. Its like gross snow. It ruined my favorite pair of sneakers. I would love to go back to the site, but I don't want to put up with the gross asbestos. Not to mention, the cops patrol regularly now because of scrappers.

Don't worry once Obama becomes president all the illegal scrapping will come to a screeching halt. Other people might tell you the real reason for the high value of copper & scrap metal is directly related to the demand for those materials in the increasingly industrialized nations in Asia & South America. It's one of those silly supply & demand things. Or Mr Bush.
|
Yes, now that Obama is on his way, looting will stop, abandoned buildings will never be razed, and we can inhale all the asbestos we want without getting sick.

| | | Yep, most scrappers fit a stereotype. Mid 30's to early 50's. Long, scraggly hair, unkempt beards. They drive mid 80's domestic trucks covered in dents and rust with large wooden sides hacked onto them to hold more stuff in the back. They dip or smoke like it is going out of style. I have met a couple, none while UE'ing though.
I am a ghost. A big, loud, conspicuous ghost. |
