i think it was her father's house that he was renting out, but i agree, she made it sound like her family had a lot of problems.
interesting thing about this house, if they were "smuggling" people or "locking" people in those rooms, i think they'd be a bit dirtier...and probably full of bodily fluids. i'm sure the father knew about it, but wanted to rent the house out, so he ignored telling the new tenants.
who knows...it is strange...

That second story is so sad. The lady is 80 years old, lived with no heat or electricity, and barely any running water. She probably couldn't afford that, let alone the assisted living place shes in now.

That second story is tragic, but unfortunately not that rare... When I was growing up the old lady next door to my friend died, and the house was stacked floor to ceiling with old newspapers, and apparently both cat and human excretions cover the stacks of newspapers. There were little hallways through the papers.
