| | | I posted this in main because I really do believe it applies to exploring in general. I don't quite understand the fascination with tearing people down here on UER. In seemingly every thread, someone is getting crapped on, talked down to or abused. New explorers take it for being new, people who specialize in macro peeling paint photos take it for that, somebody asks a perfectly legitimate question about how they post trip reports, and somebody jumps them for that, then the person who jumps them gets hacked on. Panic and Lord Rick and many others get shit all over at every turn. WTF? I mean seriously, WTF? I'm a member of several other forums related specifically to mines and ghost towns, and this sort of thing just flat wouldn't be tolerated. If you don't agree, fine. You can even state that you disagree, but is it absolutely necessary to be a rude, arrogant obnoxious ass at every available opportunity? We can't have a thread here without someone flaming. I'm not talking about the occasional cheap shot, or humorous comments about verbal gaffes. I'm talking about a pattern, a culture if you will, of attacking anyone who believes differently, or has an opinion that differs from your own. Now, you are welcome to say "Oh Jonsered is just soft and hes a pussy and he doesn't get it," but then you are just playing into my generalization above. UER seems to me to be a place where folks come to share their own unique take on their love of abandonment or decay or desolation. Excellent, can't we leave it at that? If I'm wrong, or I don't get it, tell me why. I really would dearly love to know, because it just frustrates the Hell out of me that we can't be civil. And don't tell me "The mods should handle it," because they shouldn't have to. If you lack sufficient command of the English language to express your disagreement without resorting to being offensive, then perhaps you would be better served by taking a grammar class, instead of coming here.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | I have to agree, the shit that goes down here gets people banned anywhere else. It's about time that AV puts a report post button in his forums, anyone that gets reported from 5 different sources get auto banned for 1 week, on the second 5 reports they get banned 2 weeks etc. etc. if they get banned 5 times, thats it they are out of here for good. Puggs PS. If Panic! does something stupid, I'll make sure certin people on here live to regret it.

| | | I totally agree too. while i wasn't waiting for my 7 days to be up I wondered around this site quite a lot. And a lot of what I read was some older members flaming newer member asking simple newbie questions. and instead of taking 2 seconds to answer it they flame the hell out of them and those potentially new members are never heard from again. This isn't the only site that has a flaming problem though. ive belonged to many sites that don't have a strict no flaming rule. and every thread you looking theres always some sort of a fight. I admit that I have flamed my share of people in my past and its not something that id admire about my past. i realized the harm i was doing to people and gradually stopped flaming people. my point is, that if i can stop flaming people then you can stop flaming people. and if we all did that the internet would be a whole lot of a better place. I agree with a report post button. I think that would be a really helpful tool in the war against flamers.

| | | the best way to avoid (*AHEM*) being "flamed" is to not respond when ONE person gives a negative response.. dont feed the fires and you probably wont get burned.. unless you are a gimp who deserves it and starts stupid arguments and stuff..

i started a thread with the intent of a mature exchange of ideas/opinion (aiming a little high i guess), and it got flamed/derailed immediately.....my friend told me it would, but i decided to give it (u guys) a chance.... im not gonna let it bother me though....ive been apart of forum communities in the past with people who act childish, this is just the way of the internet... also.....some ppl think since they are online, it doesnt matter what they say, or how they interact with others...

Same here. While I was lurking around the forums during my 7-day waiting period, one of my biggest impressions of the place was the severely snarky atmosphere. Newcomers' questions get flamed to kingdom come in the Rookie section, which seems a little ridiculous to me. Isn't that what the Rookie section is for? A place where folks who are just learning the ropes can go to ask stupid questions? Personally, I haven't had any problems here, but I've seen a lot of other people get flamed for really petty reasons. I've no clue why having a B.A. is so prevalent on these forums, but it can get obnoxious pretty quick.

It helps if you don't abbreviate people, and if you fully spell out you. "ppl" & "u" just don't look good.

| | | There is just a type of person or persons who will hide behind a computer screen and insult others but would never be brave enough to say the same remarks to someone face-to-face. This place is mild compared to unmoderated Usenet. I've been a Usenet Newsgroupy for over 10 years now and you would not believe the never ending flame wars that go on there. Here's a question. When members attend UE conventions does everyone get along? Any arguments or fights?..
My attitude is: "It's just words on a screen"

| | | I'm only a member of one other forum, and that it's way smaller than UER, so I can't really comment on whether people here are more or less mean than elsewhere online. However, I do think we're a mean bunch. Intolerant, possessive, cranky, and abusive. Part of this comes from the inherent suspicion involved in this hobby. "Is this dude for real, or a cop trying to set me up?" On top of that, there's been a glut of new members lately (last year or so), and people grow tired of hearing the same questions over and over again. I'm not sure why that means people respond with sarcastic and snarky answers rather than just ignoring the post. How to fix it? I'm not sure. Strictly enforcing the "no flaming" rule in the Rookie Section as well as in UE Photography would be a good start.
