If you somehow manage to get into North Korea, you will be escorted by "Guides" the entire time you are there. You will see only what they want you to see, and nothing more. I can't imagine the repercussions if you were to break away from your escort and start taking photographs of abandoned buildings, especially in a place that is reputed to murder it's criminals and homeless.

I think I'll pass on that.

A travel agent wouldn't get me there, believe me. I have to find some kind of random government department that I'm only assuming exists. The only people ever to go inside the hotel were potential investors.

And langP is right, I am Canadian. But I do know one or two South Koreans who have made it up to Pyungyang. My father-in-law made it there as part of a literary conference, at least once. I'm hoping he has some advice for me.

I like the look of this thing, its like a big fake mountain. Prefer that style to the crappy boxy condo's they build around here.

Should we consider a fund-raising drive to get racetraitor there to get us more photos and whatever else is of worth?

I don't know. That place is the number one reason why the Expos are gone.
I heard the way it was built it was impossible to tear down, that it would fall all over the streets and buildings in the neighborhood. not sure if thats true or not.

That place looks fucking amazing. I would give (almost) anything to explore there and make it out okay.

This is beautiful.

What would help the most is if we start a fake corporation and I'm the tycoon CEO and all of you are my employees. They tend to let rich investors in.

So...who wants a job with Race Traitor Enterprises?

someone told me that the concrete was of such a shitty quality that it's crumbling in places... and it can't be torn down?
yikes.

Actually, I think I remember reading that it (the Olympic Stadium) was built using stressed concrete. Meaning, dynamite or pyro can't be used to implode it, 'cause the concrete will literally explode out in all directions. Rather, if they want to get rid of it, they actually have to chip away at it manually. (I'm 95% sure I'm right on this. I used to be a big mark for stadiums and arenas when I was little.)

I dunno if this helps:

The different forms of construction used in a number of more or less conventional structures built during the last few decades will give rise to a variety of problems when the time comes for them to be demolished. Pre-stressed concrete structures fall in this general category.

In the case of progressively pre-stressed structures, it is essential to obtain the advice of a professional engineer, and to demolish the structure in strict accordance with the engineer's method of demolition. The stored energy in this type of structure is large. In some cases, the inherent properties of the stressed section may delay failure for some time, but the presence of these large pre-stressing forces may cause sudden and complete collapse with little warning.

Maybe this unfinished North Korean hotel was built in such a way that just blowing the thing up (or imploding it) is actually really potentially dangerous? *shrugs*

I'm an architecture student, and in a structural theory class we studied the immense failure of the Montreal Olympic Stadium. It's the most inefficiently designed structure I've ever seen, the entire thing acts against itself. It would be difficult to implode because everything would want to fall away instead of in.

Here's some pictures of what I am talking about:

http://daapspace4....e/MontOlmy.html#10

As for the hotel, I don't think it would have a similar problem with demolition. The problem there would simply be the amount of material that would have to be cleaned up. It is already a mountain of concrete - that is much more concrete than I've ever seen in a skyscraper of that size. Usually the goal is to make the structure lightweight. The debris pile left after imploding a building like this would be the size of the average skyscraper.

Imagine playing hide and seek in that? You could hide a whole tribe in that place and it could evolve from the discovery of fire to the bronze age before you realised they were even there.

I met a Canadian at a party once who spent six months in Pyongyang. The stories he had were amazing. He even had a North Korean girlfriend for a while (not an easy nor legal feat). At night, the city is almost entirely dark, and there are military checkpoints all around the place. He told me also that because none of the elevators are working, all the apartments on the top floors of the apartment buildings are empty. He used to go up there for some privacy.

the concrete was crumbling as early as 1991 I believe. I used allow myself one terrified glance up at the concrete ring when I'd go see the Expos.
A lot of our overpasses are in a lot worse shape.
