in 1985 work started on what was to be the Bucharest-Danube canal. it contained 2 ports and 4 locks
all work was halted in 1990

this is the place on google earth. as you can see, the crane is moved by wind or storms

your part of the world fascinates me.

It's going to be hilarious when that crane goes over.

Nov. 24, 2007--The city of Cleveland, Ohio, announces that it has developed tactical nuclear weapons, and does not wish to hear any more jokes.

Your area really really fascinates me.

I cropped and uploaded a picture of the site from GoogleMaps so everyone doesn't have to follow the link ;)

the first set of pictures was taken in may 2007. i went back today, and this is what i found:

apparently a bunch of gypsies cut it down 2 months ago in an attempt to steal it,
piece by piece, but the police managed to stop them.

I'm not sure if I'd prefer gypsies or scrappers. All we have in the U.S. are scrappers who break into places, tear out the walls in order to steel the copper pipes and wires. I think I would like it better if our scrappers were all gypsies.

All these massive projects and abandonments in the Soviet Bloc are due to the fall of the USSR and accompanying satellite state revolutions, in this case it was Ceausescu. I think it is very racist to immediately blame anything with regards too theft on Roma.

well, our gypsies are scrappers. i saw once a 5 foot tall woman wielding a GIANT sledgehammer. and when i say GIANT i mean i probably couldn't pick it up if i tried. she was smashing reinforced concrete from a demolition site to get to the metal rods.

@90rock: this is not the place nor the reason to discuss race politics. but in a country that has no welfare program involving its roma minority, with very few social awareness programs organized to educate them against having abortions with heated lightbulbs or marrying their children when they are 12 or 13 years old (not to mention the fact that all these initiatives are from NGOs), trust me, a gypsy that 'steals' from an abandoned place is considered an honest man.

Nice photos, you really captured the area well in them. Would have been good to watch the crane fall, even if it was cut down.
