There's a lot of houses that look like these just off of campus here. Surprise.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

too bad the sears dist. here in memphis never dealt much with the houses. it'd be cool to come across some of those shipping docs.

Are you now, or have you ever been?

My father turned me on to the whole Sears home thing. He is a historian and reporter for a local paper. We are working on documenting all of the local Sears homes in our area. I am having riot with this.

There was an abandoned sears home here in D.C. that was recently demo'd. It was in a snobby area and the neighbors mad a bug fuss to get rid of it. The city even offered to sell the house really cheap to anyone who could move it. nobody offered to buy, so now its gone.

My bosses mother-in-law recently moved out of one of these. An older family member purchased it and built it on a 3/4ths of an acre in what's now a pretty ritzy neighborhood. Sold the house+land for $750k.

I lived in one for about 5 years. Bought for like 82K and then it was sold for over 170K. It recently was sold again and went for over 300K. I really miss that house. It was one of the most structurally sound houses I ever lived in and the woodwork was incredible once it was redone. The only major work that had to be done was gutting the kitchen and making it more modern.

No we are just doing some local documentation. We did an article on them and many people have contacted us regarding their Sears homes. It is a side project that seems to keep taking a back seat to other things.

Cool find. In Montauk, NY there are some houses that were built and sold by Macy's, called Leisurama. The homes came fully furnished with Macy's products and could even be purchased right at the department store. They supposedly came with EVERYTHING, including pots, pans, and even toothpaste.

I've seen those style houses. I never knew. Cool info.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?
