| | Waterproofing normal shoes... < on 12/14/2007 6:22 AM >
| | | A few other people and I are planning to check out an abandoned, partially demolished textile mill. I went to scout it out a few days ago, and all the entrances are closed off except for one fairly obvious one leading into the basement. Only problem is, most of the basement is flooded with ~5 inches of water. I was able to get into a few rooms by balancing on pipes, using bricks as stepping stones, etc., but all the interesting machines and stuff-- not to mention the stairs leading to the upper floors-- were out of reach. We weren't prepared for this eventuality, and we don't really have the proper footwear to deal with it. None of us have rain boots, waders, or anything that would completely keep out the water; I'm the only one who's halfway prepared with my waterproof hiking boots, but I wouldn't trust them past about three inches or so. Also, none of us really have the desire/money to buy new shoes for this one exploration, so I was wondering: is there any good way we can keep our feet dry and warm? We were thinking of wrapping our feet in plastic sheeting and putting our shoes on over it, but I don't know how effective that will be. Someone asked me, "Are you really that afraid of getting your feet wet?" Well, considering that it's going down to about 10 here at night and this place is about a half-hour walk from where we're all living... yeah, I would prefer not to. Not to mention that the water's probably flowing in and out of some of the machinery, and I don't know what chemicals are swirling around in it. Any insights?
One day, a little boy went up to Arnold Schönberg and asked him why there were twelve tones. The boy could not handle the explanation. He was buried in twelve coffins. |

| | | Trash bags, plastic bags, something of that sort. Use two per foot just to be on the safe side. I'd highly suggest a lighter bag with a trash bag on top, but hey, your call. Not much to carry, either. You'll look like a fucking retard plodding around with bags taped to your legs, but I say it's high fashion.

my thoughts exactly..layers of them with ducktape wrapped around the feet, especially the bottoms to make a primitive sole.

| | | you should probably just invest in a pair of Xtra-Tuffs... that's what I use whenever I go draining or puddle splashing. Yeah, it's slightly expensive, but I must say, they have been well worth their money. I where them in the snow (great snow shoes), they have excellent grip even on ice.

| | | I got a set of steel toe rain boots at walmart for $13. They're good to about 1.5 feet, and as long as I wear a few pair of socks for padding, then they're all good. Just go get some, they'll come in handy in the long run.

| | | two plastic bags per each foot works very well in water or snow. As long as the bags are without holes, you are good for whole day.

| | | I don't imagine plastic bags would hold up too well while walking across concrete flooring. Just pick up a pair of cheap rubber boots. You should be able to get a pair for less than $10 and will remove a lot of headaches for you.

What I forgot to mention is I wore them around my socks. This was to keep my feet warm, I didnt care about the shoes. If the point is to keep feet dry and shoes clean, than rubber boots are a better call.

They are great. They fit right over my regular shoes. I bring them when wet is gonna happen. When not in use,I keep them rolled up in my pack. They go up to my knee & im 5'10". Got them @ my local Hardware store 4 $15.00. I also have seen them on Ebay for about the same price
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us? |

| | | Cheap boots will do wonders for you. Just remember to bring a stick or a measuring tape to see where the deep spots are (if any), because nothing is worse than water inside a rubber boot.

Thing is, the water seems to be replenishing itself... I don't know if it's a groundwater leak or a recently burst pipe, but there's a definite trickling noise coming from one inaccessible corner of the boiler room. It's not likely to freeze, I think. I agree with you guys, it would be best to just buy a pair of boots, but that'd be a hard sell for my friends. So we'll probably end up doing double plastic sheeting all the way up the legs + duct-taped soles. Thanks for the advice!

| | | I know this sounds a little corny/cheap but salvation army / thrift stores sell shoes and cloths cheap. I've bought a few pairs of pants there... It's way better to spend 5$ on a pair of pants than 30$; that might last one trip. I've seen 14 inch rain boots for like 2 bucks at some stores... And IF you wanted to waterproof leather shoes than you could use beeswax or something similar. I use " Snow-Seal " on my Sorrel snow boots...

| | | I've tried going through a drain with a combination of winter boots and plastic bags (bag, then sock, then bag, then boot)- it didn't work. go get rubber boots. Or stilts.
