56k turn around now....

spent some time today walking around the ruins of the old Western States Mental Hospital in Lakewood WA. from what i remember the history of This mental hospital it build in 1870s and was self sustaining for over a 100 years. raising cattle and gardens for food. the patients worked together on the farm. The area is now a public park the ruins are fenced off but only about 1/2 the fence is there. all the barns are still used and/or very well boarded up with power and telephone lines running to them. great place to check out if your in the area. I ran across some kids getting stoned and scared the hell out of them. they said the place is pretty popular with kids for parties.

Cool!
I took my wife back there in 05 because it was always a special place for her.
It was the first place she ever explored. Back in about 1978 with here dad.
We might have some photos from when it was still standing, I have to look around

i think the 3rd picture is my favorite. it seems almost impossible the way the ruins are standing.

Just a note, this is actually the Hill Ward of Western State Hospital. The still standing and operating Western State Hospital is just north of these ruins.

P.S. Hill Ward was partially demoed in 1989 by the county. There's a rumour that it was used for target practice by nearby Fort Lewis but I doubt there's any truth to it.

Those are some cool ruins, they look like they are right out of Bosnia or something.

Can anybody tell me why they shut down and demoed this part of the hospital? Im curious?

from what i remember hearing was that the hospital was self contained, the patients worked the fields and tended the cattle, and the whole place ran like a well oiled machine until other mental hospitals were using their patients as slave labor and test dummies for experiments. the state then said that if a patient worked they had to get paid a minimum wage.. Western States wasnt able to do that so the program got cut, ultimately shutting down the farm and going to a more typical mental hospital... they built a new western states hospital across the street that was better suited for the "new" way of patient care

(like i said thats 90% from what i remember 10% from outta my ass..... so i may be wrong)

heres a link to the group that keeps it running... lots of history and pics. http://communities...n.wsi?group_id=522

It looks like a scene from urban warfare, I'm surprised nobody's complained about it being a 'danger' to people, prompting a demolition

Did it just naturally fall apart? Or was there a half hearted demolition effort that was aborted?

How old is that place?

You should have tried doing a roundhouse kick to one of those walls and see if it would fall over
