| | Fire Station. < on 11/19/2007 10:12 PM >
| | | Well, im fairly new to UE, ive been doing draining and the like for a couple years, but not really UE, theres a abandoned firestation in a town close to mine, and i know for a fact there are no security guards, camera's,Etc. It is on the main street of the town, and teens do like to drink behind it. i have roof access as per a stairwell behind, as im fairly new, i wonder if anyone would have any tips to offer?

^ Best advice really. Have fun and watch out for unstable flooring depending on hold old the building is. [last edit 11/19/2007 10:45 PM by Zehuti - edited 1 times]

| | | That's a shame, I'd definitely go if I lived anywhere near you. You can always ask in the regional forums if anyone by you would like to go. Also, there's always the asbestos problem if that building has it. Just something to keep in mind.

| | | Hmm, Thats a good idea, ill try that, right now im making sure, so im reconing the place. And should a good 70$ respirator protect from Abestos?, because i have one of those for backup.

| | | Well, while I don't have any real experience with respirators, here's what I've gathered. If the item description does not say that it protects from asbestos, then it probably won't. I've also heard that short term exposure isn't TOO bad, except in a few extraordinary cases. Though, the respirators that I've heard protecting from asbestos cost something around $20. Personally, I'd rely on the $70 respirator keeping me safe. Don't quote me on that though, if I were you, I would try finding the specs of the respirator's canister online.

| | | Well, to be safe, I would check for any signs of active electricity (any lit LED on any panel, or rotating power meter) If you can find the power meter, and it's not moving, you should be ok. Bring gloves so they can't fingerprint you if worst comes to worst ;)

| | | Hmm.. if it's abandoned, I'm curious to why the lights are on. In that case, your recon needs to be a bit more in depth. I'm sure the lights aren't always on, so they're either on a timer, or someone is using the place for something. If the latter of the two, you need to try and see if the person moving about disables/enables anything when he enters/exits. What I'm thinking, is that if you have immediate access to the roof due to a stairwell, then security seems to be pretty lapse. I'm not going to tell you to take your chances, but that's what I would do ;)
Edit: there are quite a few female UE'rs, it might be worth asking some of them, depending on how girly they are.. [last edit 11/20/2007 3:41 AM by Zehuti - edited 1 times]

If it's powered, it's not abandoned, and as such it's probably alarmed as well. You'll almost certainly get nailed for B&E if caught; a felony charge. If you do get away with it, do you really want to post the pictures on the net of a crime? Know what your getting yourself into before you do it. Consider asking for permission to shoot it. Try starting will the police chief or someone that has access to the building. Don't get too clever for your own good when you can do something the easy way... being polite and showing a sincere interest in something goes a long way sometimes.

Wrong. Alarm tampering is bad business. Degrading a site's security/fire alarm infrastructure leads to the damage and destruction of sites.
If your doing that, you've crossed the line from explorer to just plain felon criminal.

I just picked up a "Professional Multi-Purpose" respirator made by AO Safety at a local Home Depot, which is a cheaper (in price) version of an old 3M respirator that I had which finally croaked. The AO Safety one is rated for asbestos, mold, lead, and multiple fumes, and it cost $35.00. There are also replacement filters (P-100) easily available for the unit for about $20.00. That should take care of most of your needs above ground. When draining or caving, all bets are off and you would need a different type of apparatus. Nothing like good ol' charcoal to keep us safe.
I'm going hunting for mysteries. Where's my flashlight? Don't Like Clowns who Vandalize, B&E, and Steal from Sites. |

I agree. Although there is one thing, it may not necessarily be active. It could simply be empty. I've been to a few places now that had no alarms, security, or any people at all near them, but still had power. But yeah, it's best to assume it's active and consider carefully the best way to get in (permission is a good idea).
