I agree. Although there is one thing, it may not necessarily be active. It could simply be empty. I've been to a few places now that had no alarms, security, or any people at all near them, but still had power. But yeah, it's best to assume it's active and consider carefully the best way to get in (permission is a good idea).

My biggest problem with the active electric is that it isn't abandoned. The chances of felony charges are very high in a building that people are maintaining and showing a clear concern for.
Felony charges have to be avoided; no hobby is worth that degree of trouble, slander, and expense. If you make a practice of B&E, sooner or later you will get tagged. People tend to get careless and complacent as well, rationalizing that no one cares, and everyone is doing it.

Once the intruder and/or fire alarm system is disabled, a site will probably not last long.
How many times have others here seen this happen?
All those fires, vandals, and the fucking Cu looters. This is how my favorite sites were destroyed long before the wrecking ball got them.

some people on this site especially rookies have trouble coping with the term "abandoned"

for them any place that isnt full of employees (or firefighters as the case may be) is abandoned

I have an idea city hall still owns it and knows where it is etc. it has real value even if the building is a waste maybe they plan to sell or demolish but I really doubt its abandoned if theyre payin the electric bill most utility companies come yank your meter if you miss a few years or payments...

Yeah, and the mayor's office will definitely press charges for those who B&E and get caught.
Oddly asking the police chief or right official could get you a photo shoot without even breaking a sweat, if done correctly.
An option too many "explorers" overlook.

There are only two kinds of buildings when it comes to urban exploration: ones that are possible to explore and ones that aren't. Whether or not it's truly abandoned is irrelevant. There's always potential for exploration of places regardless of whether or not they're mothballed, active, semi-active or completely vacant.

Don't let people here try to tell you otherwise.

Ive looked into it, and it is abandoned.
its scheduled for destruction, in spring of next year.
It is not manned, and not used as a fire station or anything else.
I do not know why the lights are on, but they do only come on at dusk.

If they are external lights, then you should be OK. A lot of abandonments still have the external lights on a timer/light sensor to deter intruders. Just when/if you manage to get inside, just keep an eye out for some sort of alarm like a motion sensor, or a tripable door sensor. (the kind that go off when the door piece separates from the sensor on the frame) Just be careful and take pictures is the best advice someone can really give. Good luck!

My description of the door alarm isn't the best, so heres a picture:

To spite what resident idiots claim, asking and getting permission means shooting where you please without looking over you shoulder constantly.
No worries about being prosecuted latter, and it might get you more shoots.
Meeting people in power means more opportunities to bigger and better shoots.

Some people get too sneaky for their own good; paranoia, whatever.

I'm not saying this as a criticism, but personally, I find it exhilarating sneaking around places where you aren't supposed to be. If all you want is pictures, then by all means, ask for access. I find it fun finding my own entrance and going from there.

Who doesn't? I hate having to ask.

Unfortunately it seems to quickly go from finding an open door or window, to taking boards off, or the very popular "I drove 300 miles, I'm not going home without look inside! *sound of breaking glass*".

From an explorer to a garden variety felony criminal in 30 seconds. That's exactly how the legal system will perceive B&E into a property that's not abandoned.
It will cost at least $1200 for a retainer for a criminal attorney, and for serious crimes like B&E the cost can easily hit $3-6000. Jail time is a real possibility with a felony conviction.
If it's a federal site, double that estimate, and that's for starters. Cops know how expensive it is, even without a conviction. That's part of the deterrent.

So it's really a matter of self preservation not to push your luck too hard, too many times if you don't need to.
Asking is free.

No worries.

That why I like street shooting. It's legal, but it's gets your rush on. I'm a long time adrenaline junkie.

If it's powered, it's not abandoned, and as such it's probably alarmed as well.
You'll almost certainly get nailed for B&E if caught; a felony charge.
If you do get away with it, do you really want to post the pictures on the net of a crime? Know what your getting yourself into before you do it.

Consider asking for permission to shoot it. Try starting will the police chief or someone that has access to the building.
Don't get too clever for your own good when you can do something the easy way...
being polite and showing a sincere interest in something goes a long way sometimes.

dude,dont listen to ^this^ guy.

just find a way in,once inside, look for motion sensors or whatever,if you arent sure. if you see sensors, leave. if you dont,go about your exploration.

I would not bust in there, a very bad idea if you are not certain of the whole thing. If you are able to contact some one about it, start with that and progress. Could you post a picture of the outside of the building?

If it's scheduled for demolition, you could certainly find out who owns it and say you're interested in preserving the history of the place in pictures before it goes down. Do a little research on the history that's available so you are knowledgable when you talk to them, and as long as you come across as a professional, you stand a decent chance of being let in with a smile.

Well, there's also buildings that are temporarily possible to explore. Also there are buildings that don't exist yet.
