The Nickel Belt

From an article in my town's local newspaper, Clarington This Week:

I spent last weekend in Sudbury. I was not a hostage. Remarkably, I went there voluntarily. It’s been some time since I’ve been to the town that nickel built and I can’t say that a whole lot has changed in the interval. It still seems just as hard and grey as the rock it’s built on. Weird too, to be in a place where people very obviously continue to enjoy smoking in elevators. And, as beautiful as the drive up is, and it really is, I couldn’t help but feel as though I were actually driving back through time. Back to somewhere in the Depression era perhaps. Hwy. 69, starting around Parry Sound, is littered with the rusting, rotting shells of abandoned gas stations, restaurants and all manner of failed businesses. The closer you get to Sudbury, the thicker these derelicts become. The Chamber of Commerce may as well erect billboard after billboard shouting the words ‘I’d turn back if I were you’.

This is probably the most UE-related article I've ever seen in the paper! Here's the rest of the article, which, oddly enough, goes on to great length how the author feels "creepy" watching the young waitresses and their tight butts at a restaurant he visited in Sudbury.

What's the point of the whole article?

Is it shit on Sudbury day?

I mean, has this guy been to Oshawa?

There are some very nice parts of Oshawa I'd be proud to live in!

They are bordered by Hwy 2 to the north, Townline Rd to the east, Olive to the south and Harmony to the west - to be specific.

That appears to be the most pointless article I have ever read.

There's also some very nice areas in Sudbury.

I'm sure this guy can find a restaurant with young girls in tight pants in Bowmanville if he looked around.

There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this article other than to shit on a place he hasn't spent much time in.

I guess, at least, he's showing how ignorant he is.

It's pretty unfair for him to crap on Sudbury like that.

I mean, Sudbury was founded back in 1890 or whatever it was as a small lumber camp which later turned into a mining community. Just what exactly was buddy hoping he'd find, a gold plated city?

Hell, their most noticable feature is a smoke stack that's the tallest thing around other than the CN Tower...

That said, the Greater Sudbury area is one of the most beautiful areas I've ever been to in Ontario.

Notice in the by-line at the bottom, it says that he is a resident of Durham. He should be used to cities like Sudbury. ...coming form the Oshawa area and all.

But it really isn't much of an article anyways. It IS in fact classified under "opinions". So it's just one guy's lame opinion.

He is right about highway 69, though. At least the article reminded me that next time I am up near Parry Sound, I should keep heading north for a bit.

Naw, we just can't take jokes from people that don't live somewhere. Sort of a 'locals only, but don't talk shit about us when you leave, cause we'll whine till the cows come home' kinda thing.

It's just a (not very funny) humour column, I don't think Sudbury needs to be defended from anything.

yep.

Yeah we know.

Sudbury was actually one of the cities that fully banned smoking a few years before the provincial government did.

What's the deal with the dude who wrote the article? He said something about taking a narcotic (?) pain reliever while wearing a dress backwards? Why is he wearing a dress? Is this some Canadian thing I don't know about (the word "dress" meaning something else)?

Slightly OT: I like the idea of banning smoking in public places, but they should have a smoking section in coffee shops. I love Tim Horton's coffee, but I hate having to sit outside to enjoy a cigarette and a cup of coffee.

I'm not even a smoker but I was baffled that the government would ban smoking as long as the restaurant had a vented smoking room. So, businesses spent big bucks to build these vented smoking rooms then shortly afterwards the government banned these smoking rooms as well. It's beyond silly.
