| | Define "good UER photo" (pics help!) < on 11/2/2007 1:05 PM >
| | | When it comes to normal photography, an old light switch or broken bottle can be beautiful. But when it comes to great UER photographs we have to use new rules. I think that a good UER photo has to capture the essence of the experience somehow. The photo has to beckon you to keep going forward. The photo has to give you a slight sense of fear that there may be something dangerous (cave in, bum, bad gas). The photo should capture the abandonness of the place (I've seen photos that look like a working factory, somehow it needs to prove that it's been empty for a long time). Then last but not least of all it needs to be clear, focused, and properly lit which is where photography class comes in to play. Here's my examples with my critique:
This one captures the abandoned feel for sure, but it doesn't draw me in, nor does it give me any sense of danger.
This one definitely draws me in, I want to climb up those steps so bad, but because it's taken outside the building there is no feeling of "exploration", like this was taken by some passer by not some explorer.
This one is good. It captures everything I want. It beckons me to go through the hole and look around the corner. It scares me because whoever took it is in the dark, and that hole doesn't look so safe with it crumbling down, and I can see more holes even further. And the graffiti and holes really emphasize this place is abandoned. These 3 pics were taken by me, and I really want to get good at capturing the essence. Is there any photographer or any photo in your opinion that really screams urban exploration to you? I'd like to see them please and hear your comments. Thanks

| | | For UER photos, they are really good. For UE photos, not so good. You should post this in the Photo section, might get some better feedback!!

| | | I think if you want to capture the "essence" of a place you have to look past your own giddiness about being in a place. I think this is pretty common with people just starting out and they're all, like, "OMG, ABANDONED BUILDINGS!@ LOL." Once you settle down and realize there's more to it than that, you can start to focus in on the specific details and characteristics of what makes a place unique.

Unfortunately, this is poor feedback. yumology, I think it's good that you're trying to pick apart your photos, and get a better idea of what makes a good ue photo. The rules that you have, make for some good guidelines, but if every ue photo you took always tried to 1. Beckon you to keep going forward 2. Give you a sense of fear 3. Capture the abandoned feeling they would probably all look pretty similar. Your last rule about being clear, focused, and properly lit is the only real rule I would keep. As for your only question in your post, thus I'm assuming is what this thread was supposed to be about.
Is there any photographer or any photo in your opinion that really screams urban exploration to you?

I think y0ze is a photographer that screams urban exploration. Check out their pictures on here or at urbex.nl. You'll notice that some follow your guidelines while others are great because of the subject found while exploring, or showing beauty in the decay.

| | | Ouch you have opened a box here for sure. For starters you have registered as a male. Oh no! You need to be a female noob with self pics and nice boobs posted right from the start. You should get all the right answers. No peeling paint and wheel chairs from over visited places. Not that that will get you anywhere cause they will bitch about it to. Just do what floats your boat and if you hit on the right topic on the right day you are golden. Ya um don't hold your breath. That might not work either. A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind. |

| | | While there are many photographers on these boards who are excellent, there are few who actually go beyond the photographic archetypes that appear all to often in the photography forum. For photos that break new ground, at least on UER, look at some of Dobi's work. As far as I am concerned, a truly excellent UE shot should capture the purpose and, as much as possible, the history of the building in an artistic manner. Of course, this is not possible with all shots, naturally there are some bits of architecture and machinery that are beautiful in and of themselves.

That's hardly constructive. Anywho... There is no such thing as a "UER photo." But as far as your photos go, they at least show something regarding the abandonment. It doesn't need to be overly fancy or artsy to convey the desolate feeling of a location. Heck, most of the time, people find it perfectly acceptable to post repeats of the same wheelchair in a hallway, a tub in a room, curtains flapping in the wind, peeling paint, tiled floors, a lightswitch... you get the picture. Those photos really get kind of boring after a while because everyone has a similar or identical photo, and they do little to show the viewer what this abandonment is. Photo 1 is about as good as you can do with that most likely. It's a ground floor structure, so you really can't convey too much danger. I would try to find a more interesting vantage point for that, perhaps in a corner so that more of the building can be seen. Photo 2 would be more interesting if you took it from the staircase or included more of the staircase in the shot. Photo 3 is pretty good and I like the framing, but it's a tad crooked and off for me. Keep up the good work and next time, post these in the UE Photography section -- BTW, put yourself up as female, attach a few sexy photos of yourself somewhere, and have at it.
