We foud this place kinda on accident. I was @ a Nike site in pacifica when I saw this place on next set of hills. It took another week to figure out how to get here. It appears to be the launch/ command center for the pacifica site. It is a bit of a hike, but the views are spectacular. Can see the bay and the ocean. It is in a public park so access is easy. Here is a few pix. Check the album for the rest. Any Q'z hit us up.

There were a total of 4 buildings. The guard shack, power building and heli pad were in the first section. About 100 yard down the hill, were 2 more buildings. These appeared to be the Sleeping/ living area and a Large garage w/ office or storage room. Then about 1/2 mile down the ridge further is a 12x20 2 room structure. This is the building I could see from pacifica. This looks like a view post with a living or office area. There also were sealed entrances & air ducts to bunkers or ?, scattered along the hill there. It was worth the hike

SF-51C is a favorite spot of mine. I've been there a few times, there is more and more graffiti with each visit too. The helipad is cool but tough to find if you didn't look at an aerial image of the site before heading up there. The other pads were for the radars at the site.

The small building between the launch site at Milagra Ridge and the control site on Sweeney Ridge was actually part of the USCG radio station that was on the northern end of Sweeney Ridge. On Christmas Eve of 1964 a Flying Tigers cargo plane crashed nearly right on top of the USCG station, here is a link to a site about that crash and the USCG radio station:

http://www.check-s...ying_Tiger_282.htm

Here are a few of my favorite pics I took of SF-51C:

This is my first post here, I hope I didn't break any rules. Go easy on me!

Interesting to see what this area looks like now. I visited this place in 1989. They had not yet cleaned this place up. There was still an intact fence around the site, and the smell of the diesel fuel was still pungent in and around the power house. The ceiling tiles were still intact in the buildings, and there was even an old upright piano in the structure which must have been where the personnel slept. What appeared to be a building that contained computer equipment was still in fairly good order, with the roll-up door in its open position, a huge blower still intact, and wires and other interesting items strewn about the place. The radar pads still had the knife-switches adjacent to them, and the pathways appeared to have been maintained somewhat. In my next trip up a year later, the building with the piano was torched, and then 6 months later, the County must have cleaned up the place, because it was void of anything I considered worth the steep climb....

What I didn't know was that a Flying Tiger's cargo liner had crashed there. The pictures posted on the debris found near the site are really interesting. I just assume stay away from the snakes though!

ahh yes, I add this into the UE Database last year. Great site. Did you find the helicopter pad?????? Here are some pix of the control site in marin which is also in the DB. It is a neat contrast of what the building used to look like.

Great pix! I have often seen pictures of the outside of the Wolf Ridge Nike site, but never inside, (have not had the determination to do the hike). I love the first picture Bugazon posted of the WOlf Ridge site: The grafitti written on the very bottom of the wall on the left with the name "Shorty", how apprapot.

My favorite UE'ing is of abandoned US Defense systems. I was surprised just how many of these systems were in existence just in the SF Bay Area alone.

In response to the posting on the Flying Tigers crash of 1964:

I made the trek up to that crash site this past Sunday. Spent two hours combing through the brush, and almost immediately started finding such items as an old iron transformer (about the size to fit in your palm, but heavy); the landing gear segments, twisted metal, hoses, and a whole assortment of capacitors, what appeared to be fuses, and so forth. I took pictures of all these items, probably 8-10 pictures in all of the east side impact site. I also took pictures of the east and west ridge lines, the old USCG relay radio station, and the Nike site to the South West.

I get home to review the pictures, and every photo of the crash debris was missing, but the pictures of the ridglines were there. I am not a photographer, but I do know how to operate a simple digital camera. I was just giddy with joy--NOT.

I am going back to 1: Sling-shot my HDS camera phone off the ridge line; and 2: to take the pictures again with a REAL camera. I will go a bit earlier this time to explore more of the western site.

Since I last visited the Flying Tigers site I learned that there is even more debris on the eastern slope that I didn't find. They said the plane hit the ridge, bounced up, and hit the ridge again. The area with the landing gear parts is the second place it hit, reportedly there is another impact site further east toward the jail.

As far as the debris on the western slope, it's everywhere. Tiny beads that were part of the cargo are all over the place. Much of the debris on the western slope is in the underbrush, and even though I've spent hours looking I've probably only found a fraction of what is there. It seems the heavier pieces went the furthest over the western slope, most of it into the trees.

There is still that rumor of one of the engines somewhere on the western slope and I have a pretty good idea where to start looking for it. Hopefully I'll hit the site again soon to check it out.

In reading through the crash report, I am led to believe the impact of the aircraft was 65' below the eastern side of the ridge, (jail side). The left wing was the first part of the plane to make contact with the slope. Then it bounced over to the other side. The engines were on the eastern side, where I discovered what appear to be remnants of the landing gear. Also, there is a lot of debris on the eastern side that might also come from the two concrete USCG radio buildings in the vicinity that were demolished some time after the plane went down. I can't help but wonder if some of the heavier electronic stuff I found might have been from those relay buildings?

As far as there being an engine still at the site, wouldn't that be a find?

I found large cables and such that I know must have came from the old USCG radio station, I'm sure there is some stuff that's mixed in that came from the plane and from the radio station. I've seen the report too and comparing whats in there to pictures taken of the debris right after the crash and there looks to be quite a bit of debris thats east of the impact site from the direction the plane came from. I forget where I read about the double impact, but it seemed to make sense looking at the photos.

As for the engine, from what I understand thats a rumor that's been going around for a long time. I did a thorough search of the western slope and found no engine remains. However, looking at the old photos of the debris I think I have a clue where other debris might be located on the western slope in an area where I didn't check. If anyone wants to meet up to check this site out on a Friday or Saturday, let me know.

I can make it this Friday. I was planning to return to the site with a real camera anyway. I would assume meeting at the yellow gate just ahead of the maintenance yard would work, before noon?
