Respirator while draining?

My friend and I have been planning this for a while, and we are going to go draining tomorrow at a spot we discovered.

We have all our gear ready and whatnot, but I was wondering if I should pack my respirator? I thought I read somewhere that respirators are a no-no in drains.

read over what it says in the booklet. You are not going to encounter asbestos and toxic airborne particles, me thinks.

Specifically for drainers the most handy part of a respirator is that many filters will clean out all odors, this would apply more to a sewage drain but if I was wandering that I'd wear a respirator just to keep any airborne particles out of my lungs anyway.

If the tube was completely full of water I'd agree with your question, but if there are "flow remnants" on the walls, which are drying out, there's a possibility for airborne particles.

Let me end this real quick, this is a thread where a novice is asking a good question, it's their decision who's advice to follow. Not debate with Blackhawk.

Don't know if there would be an immediate need, but defiantly keep it handy "just in case"

You'll need one to uer that drain. But to simply go out and explore it may be a totally different experience. Won't even need to dress in all black and hump thousands of dollars in gear. 2 flashlights and a sixer should do.

You don't need it. Respirators are ineffective against hazardous atmospheric conditions in drains, which likely won't exist unless you're doing sewers/combined.

Asphyxiations and hydrogen sulfide poisoning are real threats in sewers and workers occasionally die from it when they go in without doing an air quality survey.

http://oshaundergr...wi-sewer-line.html
You can't filter out hydrogen sulfide effectively and there's no way around low oxygen content, so there's nothing that works other than an SCBA (you basically breath from a compressed air tank you carry around)

I've been draining and I brought my respirator, it wasn't very useful, It was stuffy in there without the respirator with it on I could hardly breath, maybe in a sewer i would have left it on, but it was just a storm drain so I took i off.

Wearing the respirator cuts your Oxygen, unless its a heavily contaminated drain, I suggest you don't use it, you need all the oxygen you can get in some places.

You R-A-N-G?

A new charcoal based filter will give some limited protection from hydrogen sulfide, but not for long, although it depends on the concentration. If it's more than a couple dozens parts per million your in... deep shit and better be making a very quick exit.
Other than that it will just be a bleeding pain in the ass; it's work breathing through one, and they tend to clog in a humid environment. Worse they dull your sense of smell, or maybe that's good?
In any case if the air quality is bad, don't go in; a respirator will useless if the oxygen content is below what is needed to sustain life. It could buy you a few minutes in some circumstances, but that's about it.

If there's an inhalation biohazard such as mold spores, it might be worth it with the right filters.

If there's any doubt as to air quality, don't go in. In a poorly ventilated space can allow oxygen to be depleted by organic decay or hydrogen sulfide to accumulate which can kill almost instantly in concentrations above 1000PPM. You would most likely die as would anyone with you who try to rescue you. Be aware of this.
Hydrogen sulfide:
# 0.0047 ppm is the recognition threshold, the concentration at which 50% of humans can detect the characteristic odor of hydrogen sulfide [1], normally described as resembling "a rotten egg".
# 10-20 ppm is the borderline concentration for eye irritation.
# 50-100 ppm leads to eye damage.
# At 150-250 ppm the olfactory nerve is paralyzed after a few inhalations, and the sense of smell disappears, often together with awareness of danger,
# 320-530 ppm leads to pulmonary edema with the possibility of death.
# 530-1000 ppm causes strong stimulation of the central nervous system and rapid breathing, leading to loss of breathing;

* 800 ppm is the lethal concentration for 50% of humans for 5 minutes exposure(LC50).

# Concentrations over 1000 ppm cause immediate collapse with loss of breathing, even after inhalation of a single breath.

Most drains are relatively safe, use your best judgement, and be wary anytime there's limited ventilation, and a lot of organic matter in stagnant water.
I'd be more concerned with drowning or falls. Never go when storms are expected or after a heavy rain.

What happens when there is to much hydrogen sulfide, not enough oxygen, and you are extremely lucky.

There's no respirator that will compensate for low oxygen level. I don't know of any conventional respirator that will correct high CO2 level either. If you filter air through caustic soda solution, it will take out the CO2, but then the risk of accidentally ingesting caustic soda is a serious hazard.

Anything shown as "SA" on this chart is not filtered out with a conventional respirator and you need bottled air fed mask.

That's BS. Beer has alcohol, which is made up of Oxygen among other things. The beer will keep you safe. Always has with us. Also I'm a mechanic and work in Oxygen deficient environments whenever I run a car with the doors closed. I'm still here. Nuff said.
