| | | Hey all I've got a huge problem. UER is using way more bandwidth than I can budget for, and I'm getting almost no donations. In case it's not clear to you, UER is the server that runs the forum you are reading right now. If you can see these words, you're seeing them because the UER server sent them to you.
So, here are our options: 1. Everyone donate some moolah. If everyone sent a few bucks a month, I'd have enough money to continue to pay for the hosting, and to keep this server very fast and efficient. 2. To save bandwidth, I could disable the "Attach an Image" part of the forum, and also disable all images in the Location DB. That would be about 8,000 images, gone. I don't like this option. 3. Someone could offer to host this site. I'd need a Windows-based server, with lots of hard drive space, and a high-speed connection and bandwidth. No, cable modems are not "high-speed". I'd need full terminal services access to the server, and the ability to install custom software and services on it. This is also not the best option cause it involves moving a ton of files, and also involves the loss of all the special stuff I have on our current server, like RAID hard drives and backups. I need a solution in the next week or two, because I owe $160 just for the month of december, and I currently have no money. Just think of whether or not this site has helped you, and how much it's worth to you. Thanks All! [last edit 1/6/2004 8:02 PM by Avatar-X - edited 1 times]

| | | Maybe You should disable the 'attach an image' for a few months, then re-enable it. Right now as I type I am making out an envelope to you with $50 in it. Hopefully you will get it in a few days.

Most of the bandwidth comes from the Location DB anyway, however...

| | | I know I've asked this again, but how much bandwith is the forum using? Are you paying per GB or 95th percentile? If the latter, what's the peak and average usage? I might be able to get you a deal on colocation. Hey, for that matter, how much space and BW do the images use up, and could they be served off a second machine? I've got a machine with 2GB HD space free that's just doing DNS right now, on a 10MB/s line. It's Linux/thttpd, but for image hosting it shouldn't be an issue... I've also got a FreeBSD/Apache machine with a little bit of space (300-400M on it. PM me or call me... you should be able to find the number. ;)

| | | This forum is worth far more than what little cash I can donate. But I'm happy to start the ball rolling on this thread. $20 paypal heading your way. Comon folks. It's only money. If just 8 more people chip in we can cover Dec, start work on Jan and start to cover AV for his hard work'in time. (or at least buy him lunch now and then)

| | | Stealthy? Are you really sending cash through the mail? Because I wouldn't. A sum of $50 would be best western-unioned or some equivalent. I live off a students salary, which is to say that I also have no money. But I do sometimes give art lessons.. and so the most I can offer is $10 a month. Hope that helps. Can you PM me with an addresse, or a bank account number so I can set you up as a payee for web-banking? Thanks. [last edit 1/6/2004 8:08 PM by Decoy - edited 1 times]

| | | Like I said, Western Union. You walk into a grocery store with cash, and walk out with the satisfaction that your money is safely on its way to Av-X. Then Av-X strolls to his Western Union and BAM! Money. Of course the two of you have to work out locations... I think you need to know the office he's picking up at.

| | | Personally, i'd say move the LDB to the space Krenta is offering or some such similar thing. I'm not really a huge fan of it though so if it came down to it, I'd say let the ldb go... If I can manage to pay my own bills I will send some cash, but it's not all that likely at this point...

| | | Thanks to all who are donating, I really really appreciate it! I whipped up a quick bandwidth page: http://www.uer.ca/bcount.asp It updates automatically based on the usage over the last 30 days. Krenta: I've tried that before, seperating the images from the rest of the site is an incredible hassle... because somehow the data has to get from one site to the other, and then none of the stuff that modifies the JPGs would work, and it's a huge headache if one site is down and the other isn't. My bandwidth is billed by the GB... basically each GB costs like $8. I don't really have any "included" GB because I stuck UER on the server belonging to the company I work for, so I don't really have any right to any B/W.

None of the people I've talked to seem to be huge fans of it. Given the choice of an UER w/o LDB, or no UER at all, I don't think anyone's going to miss the LDB.

| | | im not sure if it is a valid solution but how many old posts are on this board? would it reduce the bandwith to remove say a few hundred threads no one has read in a long long time?

Yes, all who are kind enough to donate their hard-earned money to help this community can click the "Make a Donation" button located at the bottom of every page on www.uer.ca There's paypal donation links as well as a mailing address. -- Moving the whole LDB to krenta's server won't really work, unfortunatly. It's all or nothing. -- Western Union involves knowing my real name or whatever... I'd prefer if you mailed a money order or something. -- I'm also considering offering uer.ca email addresses for a small monthly fee, do you think anyone would be interested?

Unfortunatly, old posts take up almost no space at all. The biggest culprit when it comes to bandwidth is the graphics. -- About the location DB: If I have to remove it, I will, but it's something I don't really want to think about. It's where I post all of my photographs after I've been somewhere, and many other people do the same.

| | | You would be my hero if you offered uer.ca email addresses. What would the cost per month be, and would it be POP3 or Webmail or Forwarding. I would be one of the first ones to buy into that idea.
