How about keeping the LDB, but like Ben said, limiting the amount of pictures to five or so (per location)

And I wouldn't mind it either, if we got rid of "attach an image". I mean, it's handy, but we can do without.

Detroit's idea of limiting the LDB to registered users also sounds like a good idea.

Av could always go panhandle on the streets, too.

Limiting the DB to registered users is another good call. Not only does this cut down on bandwidth but solves the complaints of low security as well.

And if pics are going to be kept in the LDB, I say no more than 3 per location, including the main one.

Also if attach an image has to go, I'm fine with that too.

You know whats grinding my ass your all saying cut the pics. If the DB is only for registered users, and Avatar-x isnt complaining about how much space that thats being used on his harddrive, then the bandwith would drop considerably to donating people. HMMMMMM why freaking cut the pics? Because you got a site? That just yanks me I just donated 100 freaking bucks there are people here with no money in college no job donating 10-20 to save what we like and the people who are paying nothing are saying cut it. Yeah 100 bucks isnt a lot over time and yeah I think my donation shouldnt count any more then the guys who put there last 20 bucks of gas money out. But if you arent paying taxes dont freaking wine about pulling stuff. My Freaking 2 cents.

Ideally, however, I'd like to move the server to a location where I have a much larger bandwidth allocation. If someone knows of a good deal, please let me know!

I would donate if I had the money to do so. I'm not advocating cutting the pictures, BUT, if it comes down to no more UER and/or no more DB at all,
or, cutting the pics, then I say cut away!

And in any case, it all comes down to what Jester already posted:

"The point is, Av shouldn't be effectively paying for people to have a site. If someone wants a site to post their pictures, then they should make a site, however crappy it may be. To expect lots of people that don't even view the damn thing ( LDB ) to pay for them is senseless... "

Thank you Mark!! I'm thinking the same exact same thing.
People seem to be posing alot of suggestions about cutting LDB and attach image but not donating money (which seems to be the major issue here). I'm sorry if your to po' ass hell to donate but actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words. I don't like being a jerk, but I think it needs to be said.

Sometimes you get what you pay for, and I'm slightly skeptical about their offerings...

It's a moot point, though, because the entirety of this site is, for inexplicable (to me) reasons, written around Microsoft ASP. He also needs more access than (most if not all) shared Windows hosting providers offer.

PAWolf: Donating money will only be a temporary solution. Until a long-term solution can be devised to include it, I say dump the LDB for now. Get rid of the "attach an image" feature if necessary.

You've got to stop the bleeding, and if at least temporarily removing a feature many people didn't like in the first place is an answer, it should be seriously considered. Then again I was never a huge fan of it in the first place.

I'll send in some money if I can.

Thanks for the hosting link, but I don't need regular joe-schmoe hosting. This site has special needs and special requirements.

Ben said:

What you really need to do is learn some standard languages, so that the entire site can be moved to a normal webserver, so that you're not at the mercy of your provider.

I do use standard languages. My stuff runs on ASP under Windows, using the MySQL database. ASP/Windows is one of the most common and standard web languages available.

All of you people who are saying "I never used the LDB" or "I don't like the LDB", should seriously reconsider. It's a community thing, it only works if people add to it. There are currently about 370 locations in the database, with 8191 pictures. That's a hell of a lot of contributed content. It's there for the good of everyone.

When I go explore some new building, I don't keep the pictures to myself, nor do I post them on some personal site that nobody will ever know about. I post them in the LDB, so anyone may enjoy looking at them. What else is the point of taking them? Everyone can contribute, add their personal thoughts and opinions to the pictures.

I agree totally with that but what i said at my post on the end of page 3 is that a few of us need to get together and agree to donate every month regularly on a specific date so that Avatar has an income which he can count on. I guess no one read that

Did anyone read my post? I'm staring at 2, yes TWO, OC3 connections. What do you require for server specs? And what are the specs on monthly usage (hits, impressions, bandwidth, space etc)?

well, the connections sound great, but i would need a server to put on it

probably 1 to 1.5ghz for the proc, more is better, 512mb of ram or more, 20gb hard drive or more...

what sort of bandwidth do you have?

Okay here is an idea... if people like Mark want to have their pictures hosted on UER, they could buy a certain amount of bandwidth.

Common, if people really don't want to go to the trouble of setting up their own website, AV can host their pictures, for a small fee.

Mark's $100 might buy him a year or more of hosting... AV would have to do the math and figure out what to charge. I think that it would be a fair and equitable solution for those select people who want have their pictures hosted.

Hell I bet AV could even set up a simple "build your own website" template where people could add pictures and descriptions. I thing the whole think could end up being a money maker. Throw in a [email protected] email address for free.

It's not that I don't like it. Hell I view it occaisionally and I even have a few locations subscribed. I'm just saying I'm not a huge fan, and if it (and/or its' pictures) must go, then so be it.

I have to take issue with your comment of "posting pictures on a personal site nobody will ever know about". I know of, and visit regularly, many of the personal UE sites of forum members. And as for nobody seeing them, I don't think I even need to point out the Website Updates section......

EDIT: And in the intrest of not making another post, I'll note here that I think Detroit's idea would work quite well

I think it's simple. Change hosts (which I understand is complicated, believe me) or lose/cripple the LDB. I personally hardly ever go there, and I wouldn't miss it at all if it were gone.

A good coloc sounds like a good idea. I think you should consider even ones in other cities Av. Explorers are worldwide, you can get one of us to take care of the phyical aspects of it. A decent box for hosting would require an investment of maybe 600 bucks, which I'm sure the community could raise if we knew the server was heading for a new more affordable home.

Basically, living on donations isn't sustainable (unless you're penny arcade), so you really need to consider a permanent solution, and get it done quick, before you get another massive bill and have to appeal to us again.

Btw, I'd donate except I'm totally broke ATM. :\

1993gt40's offer sounds extremely sweet. I'd investigate that before you do anything else.

I use the forum but I don't use the LDB, so I personally don't like the idea of people like myself paying for that which sucks so much money to maintain and I won't even use...

I think it's a great idea that the people that use the LDB as their website for posting their explorations should be paying for part of it's upkeep. I have no problem with not being able to view anything in the LDB since I put my explorations on my "personal site that nobody will ever know about".

But if there are enough "Mark"s out there that will pay a percentage regularly and keep the LDB alive, then it's a solution that works for everyone. The people that want it, pay for it and can post their pics to their hearts content. Those of us that don't use it can continue to not use it...

I still think a change of hosting is a good idea. Krenta is pretty knowledgable in that area, I think I'd trust his advice...

It seems to me that the problem is this:

1. The site at the moment is using more bandwith than Av can afford to pay for with his current host.

2. Av has some pretty high requirements for hosting that prevent him from getting a $5 "unlimited everything" hosting plan from someone on eBay. (That's a little joke.) Shared hosting pretty much isn't going to cut it, because of the SQL DB usage and the image-manipulation software he needs installed (similar, I gather, to ImageMagick for *nix). The short and sweet? He needs his own server, whether leased or owned.

3. Av doesn't have a server to colocate somewhere, no matter how afordable the colocation is. That's the problem with 1993gt40's offer - nice connection, but Av doesn't have anything to stick on the end of it.

Now, we can try to address #1, by constantly sending in bundles of unmarked bills and regular monthly PayPal donations, but we're all basically getting gypped, really, if we're subsidizing his obscene bandwith fees.

I've sent Av a few links to hosting places that offer affordable (circa 100 USD/mo or less) dedicated servers running Windows; if anyone knows of any, you could probably post them here so as not to flood his inbox and invoke his wrath. He's expressed interest in getting a dedicated server to run the site on, if it's affordable compared to what he's paying now. This'd address #2.

Or, we can try and address #3, the lack of hardware at Av's Wolfcave. (like the Batcave, only different.) If he wants to go this route, we should probably make a new thread or two for people to list the hardware they've got, aren't using, and would be willing to give to Av. Don't just rush off and mail every last piece of computer crap you own to him, because he may get stuck with customs fees on his end, and while I'm sure we've all got tons and tons and tons of old 1, 2, 4, or 8GB IDE drives, they're not particularly useful, and having to pay customs fees on a bunch of useless drives is not going to make Av happy. I'd guess that if you've got 20GB+, ATA/33 or better drives without problems, a working mobo that'll take a 1GHz or better CPU, or a mobo with dual 600MHz+ CPU's, or spare, working 1GHz+ CPU's + HS/HSF, spare 256MB or better RAM, a name-brand 10/100 or Gig-E NIC that works, a KVM, a PCI IDE RAID card, and/or maybe a 400 watt or better ATX power supply that works, and possible a PCI or AGP 2 video card that doesn't completely suck, and you'd be willing to ship it to him, Av'd be interested. HD's, cases, and PS's are pricey to ship, and remember what I said about customs, so don't just go randomly shipping stuff to him.
