| | | Fantastic galleries and locations posted above. Can't wait to see more photos and hear about everyone's adventures! Wish I could have come... maybe next year! Despite exploring 'ethics', I'd love to get my hands on some of that railroad paraphernalia in the Adams Mine. Did anyone happen to have sticky fingers and bring some of that home? hehe! That photograph of the Ontario Northland FP7A would look great on my wall!

NOPEX could have easily just been that mill in Smooth Rock Falls. We spent close to 5 hours there and saw only a small glimpse of it. So many buildings, too many floors.
Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

| | | What's security like around the Smooth Rock Falls mill? I assume the exploration was during the night, judging by the photograph of the smoke stack. Freakin' sweet location.

Smooth Rock falls was SO great. It's definitely worth the long trip. We could have spent several days in there just wandering around. The mines were also amazing. Ross mine is historic ... all sorts of mining equipment left there from the days it was closed. Adams mine is also beautiful. Camp bison was another great location -- nice shots, jannx! -- and a nice trip in, whether you're able to get in via off-roading vehicle, or hiking. I suggest hiking for the first time -- it's a long hike, but on a clear, sunny day, it's extremely enjoyable, and seeing the building suddenly appear off in the distance from behind a long curve of trees is a lovely sight to behold. Ahh! I want to go back and do some more exploring up there -- there's still a ton that we missed along the way. So much to explore in Northern Ontario!!

| | | Not that I was able to attend either event, but it seems as though NOPEX embodied the spirit of exploration and discovery far more than this year's OPEX did. Maybe it's just because you had more time, but it's cool to see that it actually involved some places that were likely new for everyone involved. Wow, thanks. I don't know if it could ever compete with such a big event like OPEX, however the northern parts of Ontario (and northern Canada, for that matter) are left largely unexplored. I think it's important to at least experience some of these abandonments before they decay away or are demolished. It's practically impossible to explore locations up north without missing a dozen others along the way. It takes a certain amount of commitment for southern explorers to make the trek up there -- because it's such a long distance travel, it isn't something that can be done often. It means that most of what we end up exploring has only been previously explored by a couple other members of the group. Even then, the time between explorations could have spanned several months. In that time, so many things can occur -- wind storms could cover paths, buildings could get dismantled and ownerships could switch hands. The sheer number of possibilities for change in that amount of time means that even for those who have been there before, explorations of a particular location can be completely different than the times before. We went into this year's NOPEX with the full understanding that buildings that had been scouted 3 months prior, might not even be here this month. There can't be a strict schedule for something like this, no time slots for locations. All we could do was put down a general route with a list of possible locations with hopeful time-frames in mind, and HOPE that they were still there. It meant that some days could either be big successes, or big failures. As an example, we drove all the way to Opasatika for Excel Forest Products, to find a building in the process of being dismantled. We were fortunate that day, as we went to the mill at Smooth Rock Falls that night. I'm hoping that I can apply all that I've learned from this year's NOPEX to help make an even more successful trip next year. If there's one thing that I can tell everyone about this trip, it's to take the long trek - you never know what you might find!

| | | I think this was a great event, and I wish I could have attended it from beginning to end. N. Ontario is riddled with goodies far and wide and I think its pretty great that many of these locations were scouted beforehand (I believe by greydeath, arc, el_diablo and boffo, correct me if I made a mistake).
We visited Camp Bison and even though we were almost eaten by bugs and had to hike in the sweltering heat it was so worth it.

I have to agree. I am not concerned about missing OPEX at all, but I find myself becoming sadder and sadder that I missed this. Next year I will try my darnest to be there.
