ahhh... cant view that thread not a full member but all i found out was the article from the paper:

Another building burns at old Pines Hotel
August 08, 2007
South Fallsburg - A 911 call at 11:53 p.m. yesterday alerted firefighters to the latest blaze, which claimed the Ritz building. At the tail-end of the resort's life, the Ritz was used as staff quarters.
Firefighters from Fallsburg and nine assisting fire companies handled the blaze. The fire was contained to the Ritz building and no adjacent buildings were damaged.
On July 20, the old day care building at the back of the property burned down in a fire that was ruled suspicious.
In 2003, the Carleton building, a wing of guest rooms that was next to the Ritz, was torched.
The fire started up again this morning amid the piled debris. Fallsburg fire Chief Bernie Deutsch said they'll let it burn, since there's no threat to any other properties. An excavator was being brought in to tear down the building's remnants.

knowing how that area is it was probily caused by some people. fallsburg isnt the best of areas. but soo we wont be able to go to the pines any more guess its just the concord...

btw any one that is interested lemme know i'm going to the concord on Saturday evening round 8ish.

later lemme know if any one finds anything else out

I am beginning to wonder if it is the developers, and not the sqatters.

I think your right Skelly on there being no developers.Last I knew they still owed LOTS of tax money on the place but the news article said thats cleared up now.

I knew it was only a matter of time before the place started burning. And to anyone who's not familiar with it,no the entire place did not burn. The Ritz was the staff house next to the other building that burned down in 2003.All of the actual hotel parts still remain.

Still,I liked the staff house and that means no more cool collage room

yea it sucks the whole thing is no insurance so its cheaper to let it burn probily why they didnt claim it to be arson. let it burn and we have the property and teh state will rip down the remains. pines was cool its a shame

Ok, there is a lot of misinformation flying around here. The Pines as we know it consists of five parcels of land: the land across the street (former tennis center), the ski area, the golf course, some outlying property behind the golf course, and of course the hotel itself. When the hotel closed, the Ehrlichs retained four of the five parcels of land -- the hotel being sold to a holding company. The holding company is bankrupt and tons of back taxes are owed on the hotel. There is likely no significant insurance value at this point -- no one insures companies that can't pay their premiums.

As for the developer theory, that's far more likely. The other four plots of land were recently approved to be developed on. The hotel, as it stands, has some intrinsic value, but drags down the property value for anything next to it, since -- let's be honest -- it's an eyesore and a hazard. I assume it would be a lot cheaper to burn the whole thing down first, then buy it back, then it would be to just buy it back and bulldoze it.

And also no one has suggested it might just be volunteer firefighters yet. For all the heroes out there, there are quite a few nut jobs as well that are dying to be heroes but see no action. Lest we not forget it was firefighters that torched the medical library at Letchworth Village.

But frankly, no one really knows, so we should all chill with the conspiracy theories. Even though we all know it wasn't squatters.

Edit: and let me also just add that I haven't been back in a while, but by this point, she's ready to go. It's built of wood, and no amount of dreaming or wishing that the wood wasn't rotted will fix it. In 2003, it could have *possibly* been renovated, and in fact, someone saw my site and thought I owned it and made me an offer. I got them in contact with the owners -- but the $10M they offered -- $6M more than it was worth in 1998 when it closed -- was not enough to satisfy the current owners due to the mounting tax liabilities (and their greed of course). It's like having a sick dog. It could be your best friend, but when it's dying slowly and painfully, sometimes you just hope it goes quick. Nothing lasts forever.

Thats a really good way to put it.Sorry for the misinformation.I knew about the tax thing but I didnt know what development plans were in order.
It could either be the developers or random kids.We all know tons of people go there now and it doesn't help in the fact that the neighbors/town turn a blind eye to it.They figure if they dont burn it down themselves, kids will eventually do it for them.

If it is possible that something can be haunted, houses built on the Pines property will be. If for no other reason than that the fires created messes that will contaminate the soil with asbestos and other nasties, which will just be latent in and on the ground. If you've (you=reader) been under the indoor pool, the pool's pump and filter rooms as well as the nearby main boiler room are flooded to the brinks with nasty water. In the pump room, small barrels of sodium hypochlorite float in the murky stagnant toxic soup. And do you think the developers are going to clean that up? 'Cause the arsonists aren't going to. Reminds me of the homes they're building at Letchworth Village. It would be like the in Poltergeist... "You moved the tombstones but you didn't move the graves!!!"

Well recently they removed some tank from the ground next to the staff house.Im not sure who/why they did it.I dont know if you have any info on that.
I have seen under the pool, not a pretty site. Also the room under the outdoor one looks like some nasty chemicals stored in there as well.

I guess what Im trying to say is that yeah vandals are helping, but you can only burn the buildings down. That wont get rid of whats really hidden in the dirt though, like you said.
Im sure soil samples there would be off the charts with nasty shit. They want to rebuild but I dont see any building on the Pines site anytime in the near future.

ya know the pines wasn't so bad until the pipes broke like a little over a year ago. but now... yea it pretty disgusting. cant go down stairs and it smells pretty bad. me and my friends don't even go there any more. we use to go to the pines but now we just hit the concord. pines the best part now is just walking around outside since soo much is soaked. and 2 fires in 3 weeks. lets give it 3 weeks more and see what happens. at this rate, in like 3 months there wont be anything left. the problem is, ok everything is gone but the foundation still sucks polluted and disgusting.

someone had mentioned firefighters...

right now, there is a guy torching abandoned houses in Ticonderoga NY... and guess what, he was a volunteer fireman. There was a statistic that my buddy Pete (he's a fireman) hit me with that really stopped me dead... 4 out of every 10 firemen out there are pyros/arsonists... weird ain't it?

too bad to hear about the pines... you have to admit and we've gone round and round about this... abandoned buildings, all of them, are always on borrowed time.

I'm pretty sure that water is just accumulated rain, they drained all the pipes in the days after they closed the place. They figured they might reopen again soon, but they didn't. The entire water main to the Pines was shut off, which is why the hydrants didn't work in the 2003 fire. Electricity and gas were also shut off around when the building closed. But yea, you should stay away now, mildew and mold are bad for you in quantities like that.

A lot of the accumulated water has to do with the people stripping copper from the lower mezzanine under the main lobby. In the process of that, they really messed up some windows and doors. Other doors were propped open two years ago when some idiots ran phone wire THROUGH the building. Sad to hear about Ritz, that sucks. I spent a lot of time in there.

Those idiots were Verizon, that was the same time they removed the payphones. Crazily, the payphones worked until then.
