Thanks for typing in bold, I find that when people yell I understand them much more clearly. I guess I'm an idiot, cause I've never seen a tattoo parlour that reused needles.

No problem! I hope the bold font didnt hurt your ears. Sadly there are parlours that reuse needles. And needles are not the only risk factor either.

Maybe that's just because I'm not classy enough to live in Oshawa, hence my confusion as to why a Coffee Time's hooker population was endangering the shwa's tattooed population. Which on second consideration, likely bears artwork consisting mostly of eagles, 'live to ride, ride to live' banners, the numeral '3' in honour of Dale Earnhardt, and tazmanian devils with hockey sticks, so f*ck it, let them all share needles.

Now whose judging others and ranting? LOL BTW, at least I am judging Oshawa from a first hand perspective, having lived near there, and worked there for many years. I do not live in Oshawa, but I still care about Oshawa's future, and would love to see it improve. Unfortunately this story further brands the negative image.

And I surely would never suggest (as you did), that destitute people share needles due to their poor taste in artistic representations. Furthermore, suggesting that the class of 'tattoo people' can be subdivided into categories based on originality and artistic merit is funny. A hierarchy based on tattoos? LOL

Funny because the inspector said that a few pieces of equipment used to tattoo/pierce were unsanitized, and that it had nothing to do with the autoclave machine..

But if people have the details, they can't have knee-jerk reactions. (I'm poking fun at some of the replies in this thread, which really should be in 'other', in case it's not obvious).

I had my nose pierced at Longhorn in 2003 so when I read this post I looked for as much information as I could and even called the Durham Region Health department. Luckily I am not affected in any way. I also found out that the chances of anyone actually being infected is very low but the Health Department would be negligent if they didn't inform the public and tell people to get tested. I agree this probably would have been better posted in Other and I guess a mod will move it if they feel it's necessary.

For the record, btw, I'm not talking about people 'accepting' me for having a tattoo, that's never been an issue for me, or for society in general these days, really. Especially considering that you wouldn't see mine if you met me on the street anyways.

I think this is far less an issue nowadays, society is more accepting when it comes to tattoos and piercings. I work in the corporate IT world and deal daily with directors, controllers, CIO's and CFO's and my nose piercing or my two tattoos have never been an issue. One of my co-workers is tattooed from his neck down to his ankles and it has also never been an issue for him.

Right. LOL I am sure hospitals nowadays are run less securely than a tatoo parlour. I know several people who work in parlours (some in Oshawa too!), and not only do they tell horror stories about the lack of proper standard regulation procedures, but even the Ontario Ministry of Education changed the science curriculum to ensure many workplace and college level courses include tattoo and piercing safety in the course expectations! Clearly this reflected the need. And yes, having worked in hospitals, and the better half being a nurse, I DO trust them more than tattoo parlours. At least nurses and doctors have ample education and strict guidelines.

I unfortunately do not have the same confidence as you in our local hospitals and health care system...

My sister is a nurse working at Hillsdale Manor - a retirement/long care facility in Oshawa. She has told me that when they have to send their residents to Lakeridge Health Oshawa they send a nurse along to ensure they are cared for properly otherwise they come back to the facility with bed sores and other complications such as dehydration.

A friend of mine had to take her 4 year old son to Lakeridge Health Oshawa in 2000. They were put in a waiting room that had a hazardous waste bucket in it, he ended up getting stabbed by a needle in the bucket and subsequently had to undergo Aids, Hepatitis and other tests to ensure he wasn't affected.

Two months ago my husband was taken to Lakeridge Health Oshawa by ambulance because he slipped from the second story balcony on our house while adjusting the satellite and landed on my car. He was left strapped on a backboard with glass embedded in his head and back for 6 hours after they did x-rays. During this time the nurse came in and handed me a bed pan to help him pee. When the doctor finally came in to say he could be removed from the backboard the nurse then came in with a bucket of water, a bar of soap and two towels and told us we could clean the glass out of his head and back. She didn't help and they didn't once check the cuts to see if any needed stitching.

In 2003 at the height of the SARS outbreak my dad went into Lakeridge Health Oshawa for lung surgery. After the surgery he was put in ICU and there ended up being a SARS patient in there. I visited my dad the day after his surgery and he was up and eating and in good shape. Two days later he was on a respirator, seven days later he died with all of us beside him. Several days later we started reading stories in the newspapers about a man who had recently died in ICU who was suspected of being another SARS casualty. My mom spent days trying to contact the hospital to find out if it was my dad they were talking about and no one would return her calls. I contacted the Toronto Sun reporter who had written one of the stories and with his help finally got the Chief of Staff at Lakeridge Health Oshawa to call my mom back. They ended up ruling my dads death as acute respiratory failure but would not say that it was SARS, yet it took my family doctor over a year to get the hospital to release his autopsy report.

I could go on but I'm sure you get the point. One instance of unsanitary equipment at a tattoo parlour pales in camparison to the negligence that I have seen or heard of at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.

Man...Im sorry to hear about your Dad and friend's son. Good to know you're okay though. That would scare the hell out of me!

I will agree that Lakeridge Oshawa is not my fave. They skipped a post op med when I was there last, and boy did I scream profanities in pain! They have a good birthing department though. When I said I had more faith in doctors and nurses I was making more reference to my family Dr and specialists (along with the lab tech nurses who did most of my needle work). But I agree Lakeridge Oshawa has a crusty reputation.

I think the Lakeridge hospitals in general are substandard. I mean, they get shafted by the Province constantly budget-wise. And Lakeridge Whitby suffered a fire recently, so all their patients were moved to the other Lakeridges around the area. I tried to access Lakeridge Whitby but there were guards milling around the all the doors.

Thank you!

Yes they do have a good birthing department. I had my daughter there nine years ago after a 19 hour difficult birth and the staff were fantastic

I wouldnt worry! Just bring somebody to make sure they dont mess up! If I didnt, I would never have gotten my morphine after my surgery! Also, I find its the nurses (some of them) who are the jerks there...not the doctors.

I dont know.... I had my day surgery there and the nurses were wonderful... they kept giving me drugs for my pain and they took care of me lol... the horror stories Ive heard involve surgeries that are longer (3-4 hour long surgeries)... this one woman I know had surgery at Oshawa and the anaesthesia they gave her made her have a reaction and she almost died.

Yeah, good ol' Oshawa Gen! My cousin nearly died there from a blocked bowel (he was sent home and his parents were told it was just gas), and my niece was sent home with an extremely high fever. She was taken to another hospital and the doctor there nearly freaked when he heard that she was sent home in that condition.

I lived in the 'Shwa for 28 years and sadly it leaves a lot to be desired.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.
