I've seen rude drivers a whole lot more.
-av

I remember one time on the bus a visually impaired man got on and the driver didn't bother waiting for this man to find a seat before starting to pull away. The poor man was groping in the air trying to find something to stop himself from falling down, luckily several close by passengers got up and steadied the man before he did fall.

Ambivalent? Well yes and no

I'm not sure whats the case with the TTC, but usually the bus drivers wages aren't whats eating up the ledger, but typically with mixed-mode transit systems its either the subway employees like turnstyle attendants.

Its not just active drivers wages that play into the 90%. Think about the pensions of those that dont work for the TTC anymore. There's lots.

You could probably save money by actually getting rid of the drivers on the Scarborough RT since you don't need actually.

What my street car driving buddy had to say about losing the shepard line

I suspect its just a big doomsday thing. It works for many transits. TA threatens to cut this and that, than the state/province comes in with some funding. Same shit different day. hehee.

Or the management and executives. And like someone else already said, I'm sure they have a nice pension plan as well.

Well...in the case of the TTC, I don't think there is overpaying the management going on from looking at the figures here.

Like most companies, management salaries don't make up a huge portion of total payroll at the TTC. Here's the list of TTC employees who made over $100000 last year. There's 277 people here, and most aren't management types.

OMFG this is probably what we should have started with. Its far worse then I imagined. Clarification though, executives usually don't take to much out of the 'pool' so to speak because there is not that many of them.

This however, is astonishing!

City of Toronto - TTC STEWART JACQUELINE General Afternoon Night Clerk $100,434.00 $76.00

I now know I picked the wrong line of work.

Most of those people are management. All the forepeople, supervisors, designers, engineers, etc. fall into the management category of the TTC. Only the operators, clerks, and wannabe-cops wouldn't count as management.

It all depends where you draw the line.

I don't consider front line supervision or engineers as management, and I definately don't consider designers to be management.

No matter where we draw the line. I don't think the engineering staff, superintendents, and supervisors on that list are overpaid.

I guess it depends on what your comparing them to. Project managers I know who work in the bank as well as in the hospital make between $38,000-$60,000, about half of what these people do.

I've heard the same about hydro workers as well, if I remember the figure right I read in NOW that 70% of the workers at Ontario Power HQ make over $100,000.

It would be nice if everyone else in comparable positions would make as much as they do. I do think a Night Clerk making $100,434 is overkill.

First of all, TTC operators with over 30 months on the job earn $26.58 / hour, which works out to about $55K per year. Many of them are working a full-time split shift that, when the downtime in the middle is factored in, adds up to more than 11 hours a day though they only get paid for 8.5 hours.

As someone has already pointed out, many of the positions on the pay disclosure list are mid-to-senior operations staff. These employees make what they do because people with their experience and/or skills are in short supply and get paid that much or more by the private sector. Being a project manager at a massive integrated transit operator or a utility requires a considerably different skill set and draws from a considerably smaller pool of potential applicants than being a project manager at a bank or a hospital. If it didn't, your project manager friends at the bank and hospital would have powerful reason to have jumped ship for the transit commission. They haven't because they don't have the engineering or construction or trades experience that the TTC needs.

Your outrage at the earnings list is founded entirely in ignorance, since you have no additional information about the roles and responsibilities assigned to any given employee on that list, nor even how much of the amount given was overtime. In many cases, the amount disclosed is not simply base salary, but base salary plus a significant quantity of overtime. This is likely the case for all the operators and special constables that appear on the list. Despite the wage rates that people in this thread are describing as offensive, the TTC has significant difficulty recruiting and keeping enough operators to reach its service targets. Similar shortages exist in its vehicle, track and facilities maintenance departments, where TTC HR contends with a severe labour shortage in the skilled trades.

Anyway, payroll taking up the lion's share of operating expenses is typical for nearly any organization. The TTC's 75% payroll as a portion of total operating budget compares favourably to both the Toronto Police (94%) and a typical suburban school board (Halton Board of Education, 85%). Payroll at Transit Chicago is also about 75%, New York City Transit's is 78%.

And that takes me back to school bus drivers. First of all, school bus drivers are criminally underpaid, and they're in that situation for a reason. The demographics of that workforce are primarily stay-at-home mothers and retirees with little else in the way of skills or other prospects in the job market. The positions are largely split-shift part-time usually working just four or so hours a day, and are often un- or poorly unionized. School bus transportation companies don't have to pay their drivers anything more because they view them as passive, desperate and eminently replaceable.

You can push your politics of resentment all you want, but while there's no shortage of people to fill entry- or mid-level positions at banks, there is a shortage of people willing to drive a TTC bus all day for $26/hour. While the union puts some upward pressure on salaries, the labour shortage would only be worse if the Commission were paying operators less, and if we were capping operator pay at $16/hour we wouldn't have any buses on the road at all.

It's not wrong to pay people a healthy salary for providing a vital public service, regardless of what education (or lack thereof) they required for the job or whatever negative anecdotes you should choose to cherrypick from your personal experiences with select members of the transit union. Welcome to labour market supply and demand.

Full Disclosure: I do not work for the TTC, nor do I know anyone who does. For the past fifteen months I've been riding the 36 Finch and 42 Cummer buses on a daily basis (oftentimes substituting the 39 Finch East for the 42). My salary is significantly less than that of an experienced TTC operator, but for some reason I'm not angry about this.

Kowalski:

That 78% for the NYC Transit, you are talking specially about the Metropolitan Transportation Authority as a whole or specially the bus division which is called "New York City Transit" ?

That's kind of laughable to make a broad sweeping generalization like that. I'm speaking on behalf of three managers all with different levels of experience. They all have different skill sets, working in transit certainly isn't worth more, they are equally qualified people. I'm saying their pay certainly should be more, to be inline with their responsibilities. I can express whatever dissatisfaction I want in regards to pay, the wonderful thing about seeing such information disclosed is that you can reach your own conclusions about them.

Your outrage at the earnings list is founded entirely in ignorance, since you have no additional information about the roles and responsibilities assigned to any given employee on that list, nor even how much of the amount given was overtime. As ignorant as my cursory view might be for you, I most certainly can only speak for positions I do know something about. And, just as a note I seriously doubt overtime is calculated into these figures, it generally isn't from what I've seen of other publically released salary information found elsewhere online.

Anyway, payroll taking up the lion's share of operating expenses is typical for nearly any organization. It's 90%, as noted earlier.

And that takes me back to school bus drivers. First of all, school bus drivers are criminally underpaid, and they're in that situation for a reason. The demographics of that workforce are primarily stay-at-home mothers and retirees with little else in the way of skills or other prospects in the job market. Yeah, but we were not talking about school bus drivers now were we originally? They should be unionized, and many other trades and positions should be as well.

You can push your politics of resentment all you want, but while there's no shortage of people to fill entry- or mid-level positions at banks, there is a shortage of people willing to drive a TTC bus all day for $26/hour. Only you possess the masterful art of taking something like an opinion and attempting to elevate it to something 'political'. It's not political, its an opinion and don't try to plaster it otherwise. As much as I don't have first hand experience questioning such pay and responsibility, you certainly haven't proven to me that you know much about how banks and hospitals work either. If you really did, you'd never enter a discussion with such inflammatory language in the first place, and you'd take your own advice -- of stating people are paid how much their experience/responsibilities are 'worth' including how much they are in demand. It doesn't work that way, especially when you move lower down the 'food chain'.

It's not wrong to pay people a healthy salary for providing a vital public service, regardless of what education (or lack thereof) they required for the job or whatever negative anecdotes you should choose to cherrypick from your personal experiences with select members of the transit union. Thanks for the smashing insight Kowalski. I know I wasn't as smart as you to figure that one out on my own, I mean how could I? Your telling me about paying people decently for their labour? I most certainly couldn't have figured that out being from a working class background with family members who are tradesman and laborers (note: NOT bus drivers) or from reading salary lists, or consulting with people outside of my own area -- oh yeah I forgot, that's cherry picking.

Cherry picking vs. Limitations of knowing everything! I don't think I can argue with that...

Full Disclosure: I do not work for the TTC, nor do I know anyone who does. For the past fifteen months I've been riding the 36 Finch and 42 Cummer buses on a daily basis (oftentimes substituting the 39 Finch East for the 42). I don't work for the TTC either, but know of two people who worked in administration. I take the bus too and it generally makes me late for everything. I've always taken the bus/streetcar/subway and know the system inside out from commuting on it. It pales in comparison to other systems in other cities in the world and since its a public system I believe everyone in this thread is entitled to their opinion, regardless of how you may disagree with it.

Overtime has to be factored in; no operator/collector could break the $100k mark without having overtime factored in, considering that the top salary for any operator/collector is under $27 and hour. To breach $100k without any overtime at $27, you'd need to work 3704 hours, or the equivalent of 92.6 40 hour work weeks.

I don't think there are any drivers/operators/collectors on that list. I could be wrong though, I'm too lazy to scroll through the whole thing now, but a break down would be interesting. Oh well.

It listed more than a couple of operators on there, which I believe is the term used to describe bus drivers/subway operators/streetcar drivers. I'm not sure about collectors, but collectors are commonly operators with many years of seniority. It's not a "bottom of the job chain" position.
