TTC: Toronto's Lifeline

The TTC here in Toronto just released a new video about it's operations, new vehicles and so on. If you're as much of a transit/radio geek as me, there's a particular part that'll give you wood, but I'll let'cha figure that part out yourself ;)

That was awesome, even if a bit cheesey. I really hope at least some of that proposed "transit city" plan comes to fruition. A city the size and population of Toronto's should not have such a small subway/light rail system.

Too bad the funding hasn't been announced for that yet. At least they have the plans though.

Still, one has to be amazed at what an underfunded system has accomplished thus far.

Yeah, I heard they got a vaccuum car. I saw it parked at the Keele miniyard.

Interesting video, but to call TTC a world class transit system has got to be a joke. I've been to some pretty ghetto eastern European cities and there transit is far better then the TTC.

Dedicated LRT's are really the way to go. Subways are fancy and all but ive rode quite a few of these new LRT's and I have to say I like them better the subways. Saves time not having to enter an underground station, and of course more stops. Bombardier LRT's are really comfortable, fast and when paired with dedicated right of ways and GPS can be timed down to seconds.

That map makes me laugh, I'll probably be dead by the time all those proposed LRT routes are laid down.

From my street car operator friend.

http://www.transit...ity_fullreport.pdf

This is the commission report for all of the new LRT routes being planned. It says there is no money for it, but its first in a step to maybe actually doing some of these lines over 15 (read 50) years. The TTC has never actually had a plan like this before. Since Harper is getting ready to get some dirty knees with the city to get some votes. There is a chance he might give some money. Not all at once, since its going to take a long time to build out, but a little bit every year.

Giambrone is quite the go getter, he actually takes the TTC wherever he goes, instead of Moscoe, who got cheif supervisors to drive him around all the time (oh yes, I used to hear it on the Scanner)... So for once, things look slightly positive for the TTC.

TTC wants to get new streetcars sooner than later, instead of rebuilding the ones we have to make them last another 15-20 years. There is a report on that around, but I can't find it. Yes they will be slinky low floor streetcars, and any streetcar they buy for the new LRT lines, will likely be the same as these new ones.

What will be nice with these new cars is I hope we get cabs, so I can shut the door and not have to deal with Rif Raf hehe. Documentation is starting, and should be driving full time by September now.

The TTC last I heard was going to buy the same LRT vehicles we have over here on the Portland Streetcar system which are from Škoda-Inekon in the Czech Republic.

They even sent TTC people to ride the Streetcar system here.

TTC is sleeping with Bombardier, I've only been to Pilzen and Praha (well had a 1 hour transfer in Ceske Budejovice) but I havn't seen one modern tram in any of those cities. Just the old school trams.

Shit even Poland had modern bombardier trams.

Its funny Skoda means too bad in Polish. They also have a number of "skoda" cars in poland.

Yeah....thats what I figured...but I think its funny though they took a trip all the way to Portland, OR just to see them in action here. The story I heard why is that like Toronto, Portland has lots of tight turns on its streets.

While Bombardier has been officially confirmed to have the contract for the T2 subway cars (next subway car purchase), it's only rumors that Bombardier will also get the contract for LRT. I honestly think the TTC will be looking elsewhere for that purchase.

Not to be technical, but they won't be called T2. There is already a second generation "T" car out that's called the T2...they're currently in use in Toronto. They're virtually identical to the T1 cars.

Yah I wasn't completely sure on that because the official story I keep getting is different on that. Some say it's the new cars to come, some say like you just did, some say it's going to be a new order much like the T1's, but not like the one's in the video with the articulated joints and such.

This whole tight turn being a problem I think is just a lie or at least an exaggeration. There has to be some way to make an LRT handle those tight turns. Take a look at Lisbon Portugal's trams. They have old school really small streetcar named desire style ones. However Bombardier has made some really short ones with a small slinky link in the middle. Don't quote me on this but I do think there shorter then the slinky TTC street cars, perhaps even the standard size ones.

I think bombardier will get the LRT contract. Most of europe is using Bombardier.

Budapest has the longest trams in the world, pretty bad ass.

one thing I can tell you about the Combino trams - they STINK, they all smell like burnt hair! i mean, really!

plus, they thought it would be cheaper to buy them without the built-in air conditioning, so in the summer it was sometimes like 43-45°C (~113 degrees Fahrenheit) inside!

sure, they're cool, but... when you gotta ride them daily...

Skimping on the air conditioning, what a great idea in a city that has 4 seasons. LOL.

Wow this thread is back from the dead. I've used trams daily in Austria and never noticed an odor problem
