I love going to the Locks (and the big ships). Engineer's Day (last Friday of June) is the only time they let you out in between the locks now. My wife and I have been going the last couple years.
We get some ship traffic here in Bay City MI but not the way the Soo does. I frequent here:

The wife and I are going to make a trip to Duluth via the UP and hit a bunch of places in between.
I would post a couple of my boat pics but they are way too big. I have several albums in the Public Gallery on Boatnerd.

Man, I was there with my family when i was 3 or 4. I absolutely loved it. Can't remember too much though... I do remember watching the ships go by, and eating at The Antlers. Good times; dad just said we need to go back up there this summer as a side trip to our family fishing outing at Peevee Pond.

thats cool, i wanna make it up there for engineers day. speer and a few other GLF boats could use a coat of paint

i caught the speer at mission point passing the Blough. oddly enough, on the bloughs downbound trip she shook her rudder and the speer came to get her.

those thousand footers are a sight to behold! my office is near the south shore canal and its always somthing to see a bulker go through. I personally find saltys boring as they dont seem to have the character of boats like the canadian transfer pieced together from multiple ships

the good looks of the halco triplets (later windoc/cedarglen/algoontario)are un beatable, they too are the result of a frankenstein chop up of ocean going ships

i have a picture of her in drydock with the chimos bridge still in place so it looks like she could be piloted from 2 places

For a frankenstein how about the Taddousac? I see that boat everywhere we go; the Soo, Welland, and it makes frequent trips here to Bay City.

Got to go see what Algo boat came in today . . . . . .

Not a big fan of the barge/tug conversions either but we get them here.
