O.C.A.P. Takes Over Abandoned Building

I'm up at an ungodly hour... anyways, parents woke up for work and started watching Breakfast Television and they talked about this, thought it would be interesting to mention.

Hundreds of protestors took over an abandoned building on Bloor and Oakmount.

Several dozen police soon descended on the scene, forcing the protestors out of the house.

you ARE up at an ungodly hour...

But then again I've been awake since Monday.

OCAP tried to do something similar last year too only were unsuccessful...Apparently, most of these abandoned buildings (that they get into) are equipped with fully functional electricity and heat....Go Taxpayer dollars eh?

OCAP is constantly getting crapped on, especially since they lost the union support they had a few years ago.

These houses have probabily been UE'ed/ They are right on bloor and there at least 8 of them.

I didn't even see this on the news today, funny too, being so close to the election.

Well, when OCAP stormed the old Police station (was it the old HQ?) on Jarvis south of Bloor... it was fully functioning, lit and heated and all. Now it's some sales office for some condos. Hmmmmmm..

Those OCAP people should be thrown in jail.

I was there the other night when they took over this house. A bunch of screaming uncivilized idiots. They proceeded to Miller's house afterwards (just down the road on Gothic Ave.) and screamed like idiots yet again.

Considering the crap they tossed around, violent protests etc, I have no sympathy for them. They don't give a damn about the homeless. They just want to cause trouble. That is one of the reasons they lost the union support they had a few years ago.

And the ironic part is that the city is planning to convert this house to affordable housing. Almost afraid to see the place now. I hope I'm wrong but they probably trashed the place beyond repair.

You see, I've gotten into a heated debate/argument about this with my partner who IS a OCAP protester....or so they claim. Anyways, their argument is that there are all these buildings with fully functional electricity and heating and that the government is wasting tax dollars because they're "abandoned" and are in "decrepit states".

When I brought up the potential that the government was working in on converting these buildings into affordable housing, the argument brought back to how it was just to make us shut up.

My take on it?

I think the government IS trying to convert these into affordable housing, but needs the public to back them up. Blah blah blah....any by-law, policy or plan of action taken by any organizational force is subject to both monetary and time constraints. if they are, or are not turning them into affordable housing it will still take TIME for too many reasons to name right now.

In short....Protesters are interesting creatures (may not always be the brightest though).

First, bear in mind that none of these properties in Toronto is truly "abandoned". They are all owned by some person or institution, and worth a pile of money, even if just for the land they sit on.

Unfortunately, many of these properties become unoccupied and decrepit on their way to becoming something else. Assessments, permits, financing and redevelopment all take time -- in some cases, years.

For OCAP to assume that the owners are going to halt their plans and hand over some very valuable real estate to the "The Homeless (R)" is the worst kind of stupid.

Second, just who are these homeless? If OCAP is referring to the professional panhandlers who crowd strategic Toronto street corners, they already have homes, thanks.

If OCAP is referring to Toronto's addicts and alkies, most of them have homes to go to as well. What they need is active therapy and managed care, not a house on Bloor St. So vote for more institutions that deal with these kinds of problems.

If OCAP is referring to the mentally and emotionally disturbed, well, see above.

That pretty much leaves parents and children fleeing violent relationships, seniors left with no family support, and the victims of fires or other disasters who (foolishly) neglect to have insurance. So donate to the many charities that are already in place to deal with these issues.

Voila! No more homeless.

Third, "affordable housing"? In a free market, all housing is affordable by someone, or else the price drops until it becomes so. If OCAP wants housing the _truly_ homeless can afford, they should inform themselves about very smart organizations like Habitat for Humanity, which gives deserving families the opportunity to create valuable real estate for themselves. H4H can always use volunteers willing to do a little work.

And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.”

To be fair, a lot of these victims can't afford insurance. Faced with "So, do we have groceries in the fridge or do we pay for the insurance."
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Well put! Instead of raising a ruckus and trashing stuff, these folks can make a bigger impact by helping organizations like Habitat for Humanity.

OCAP, led by John Clarke, is a lot like PETA. Clarke is one of those guys who lives in a beautiful home but pretends to act of behalf of the disenfranchised while never actually helping them. The goal is only to further their organization and personal wealth. Clarke and David Miller see eye to eye on many issues, so it's sad to see so many boneheaded Torontonians return Miller to power, thusly ensuring groups like OCAP never go away and never accomplish anything.

You Swamp thing. Everyone cant afford insurance. I know Mommy and Daddy probably have everything tied down but not everyone is so lucky. The price of living today is higher than it ever has been. To drive a car legally it can costs thousands a year on insurance alone. Paying to raise a child or children can cost thousands. When your in the shoes of someone who has to decide wheater to pay over priced insurance to cover something that may not happen and if it does may not be coverd or to feed themselves than you may speak. Than and only than do you have the right to judge these people. I agree as a person living in Toronto many of these people just dont have the drive to get off of the street but thats not to say that every person has chosen to sleep in what can be -30 temperatures. I can only guess your one of those little Bayview pop collard little ritch boys that have never had to choose between food or bus fair to work. I had to live in a building for a year with some people who had just gotten off the streets and I can tell you none of them were drunkards or lazy. They just had a bad deal in life.

To say that OCAP has never done anything to help the poor is an astoundingly ignorant thing to say.

Also, to Fedge and Skelly: what have you two done lately?

1.) A decent householder policy can be had for as cheaply as $10 a week. It's a contractual requirement for most mortgages, too. If you're not in a position to pay that, you're not in a position to own a home.

2.) You don't get to tell me whether or not I may speak.

3.) I absolutely have the right to judge a person who is begging money from me.

4.) For your information, I have lived below the poverty line for most of my life. I'm doing quite well now, thanks for asking. The difference between my life then and now is the result of more hard work than you can possibly imagine.

5.) There's no such thing as "a bad deal in life". Your life just is. It's you who has to deal.

Micro, I've done some research into OCAP and have found nothing but protests and various other demonstrations that they do.

I have yet to hear about these folks helping groups like Habitat for Humanity, Good Will or helping with food drives etc.

I will only speak for myself but I help where I can. I donate to food drives and donate what I can to Good Will. I believe strongly that this makes a far bigger impact than rioting and causing trouble.

What have they done to help?

Same here...even thumbing through there website...where's there list of accomplishments? All I see is see things like "COME TO THE 5PM PROTEST AT THE AVENUE ROAD WENDYS AND BRING WAFFLE IRONS!"

And what do they need fundraising for? They don't disclose it.

And what do I Do? I donate to the food bank regularly and I also donate old cell phones so that they can be given to battered women so they can be used to call 911 at least.

I'm sure if you gave the OCAP site more than just the cursory once-over, you'd find that there's more to their work than just superficial protests.

And while you two are making yourselves feel better by offering bandaid solutions like donating to the local food bank, there are actually people out there who are trying to tackle things from the source of the problem. You know.. so that maybe people wouldn't have to go to the food bank in the first place.

But hey, keep giving. I'm sure someone out there will enjoy that can of sardines, or cellphone, or whatever it was you decided you didn't want anymore. Keep up the hard work, boys.

As for the fundraising. Try reading:

"OCAP has always struggled to carry on its work with the absolute minimum of resources. We organize our campaigns, plan our actions and intervene to defend people under attack on a monthly budget of less than $5,000. That means that we run an office, do our outreach, organize our work and events and pay two organizers on a budget most unions and social agencies would regard as impossibly small."
