| | | Active airplane infiltration ? < on 7/8/2006 11:48 AM >
| | | Quite tipsy on an overnight flight, I noticed a stewardess enter a door and forget to lock it behind her. I opened it and saw stairs going down, I could see a bed down below. I was pretty tempted to go down the stairs for a quick look around, but I decided not to risk causing an international incident! Made me wonder if anyone on here might have any good in-flight infiltration stories...

| | | not exactly in-flight persay... i used to work for a major overnight shipper and worked as a driver on the ramp. i used to spend every single moment of break time and down time driving around the gianormous complex and seeing how many catwalks i could climb my way onto without getting told i was in the wrong area. this was all before 9eleven though. i used to be able to just walk onto any plane, into any cockpit without anyone around to even see sometimes. this was great in the mornings too, they usually keep cartons of orange juice in the cabin cooler. but i think my favorite was seeing the 747's that used to fly in from newark about once a month. the 747 is a beast compared to the airbus's i was used to loading. i would always wander up to the second floor cockpit and cabin. the jumpseat cabin was like a luxury first class. they would always have grapes and finger sandwiches. but alas, those days are gone. i miss that job.

It's just the crew rest area. Most long haul aircraft have them. The only things down there are a few bunks and at least one crew member who will not be happy to see you. For photos: http://www.airline...o1k&disp_order=asc
It should go without saying that messing with aircraft in flight can result in serious criminal charges, civil fines, injury or death should other passengers mistake you for a hijacker, and/or an all expenses paid stay in Gitmo. If you want to see any of the nonpublic areas on aircraft, ask one of the crew if they'd be willing to show you around after landing. Some crew will oblige, but it's up to their generosity and the airline's policy.

| | | I used to work for a major airline out on the ramp, and to the best thing about being down below were some of scathing comments regarding the company's management that other ramp workers worldwide had written on the walls of the cargo holds.
The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave. |

I have heard most of the cockpit tours and the like have been gotten rid of after 9/11. Not a good idea imho.

Just for the record, I never said it was real, just amusing. Though when it first came out there were a lot of gullible people...

| | | Correct. My understanding is that once the cabin door is closed, the cockpit door is locked shut for the duration of the flight. Just UE inactive planes instead http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=24000 (full members)

| | | For a short period of my life I flew planes for a living. Of course I did not make much money doing it, and it cost me over $7000 to get the licence and hiring a plane was much cheaper then than it is now. When I mentioned I had a pilot's licence to a steward on a 737 flight up to Canberra once, they let me in the cockpit for a look see. It was what I expected. Looked like a DC3 cockpit only more advanced and more stuff that could go wrong. The thing I relly noticed was the autopilot adjusting the trim tabs. It was a short flight so I had to to go take a seat shortly for the landing. They did offer to let me take the jump seat while landing but I refused saying "I better not. It would not look good if something went wrong." It was rather amusing walking back to my seat to see the curious looks on passengers faces (I only flew passengers once. I used to fly cargo). That was all pre 9/11. I doubt they would let me do that these days. Apart from anything my licence lapsed years ago. I once hit a cow in a plane. I'm one of 5 Australians to have done that. But there have been more than 200 "non bird -animal related incidents" in Australia. Mostly sheep and roos getting on runways. Yeah, I would imagine a live plane infiltration would not be a too bright idea for the reasons others have already explained. [last edit 7/15/2006 9:47 AM by Panic! - edited 1 times]

No cockpit access in flight, but I said 'after landing' in my post.

| | | I personally don't like planes much (simply because I never seem to find a decent view out the window; it's always cloudy when I fly). But with all this Post 9/11 terrorism scare, I'd think it'd be pretty stupid to get caught going into a crew-only area of a passenger plane. Even if the crew might be ok with you, imagine some passenger spots you, freaks out, and the next thing you know 5 big inbreeders are beating the "terrorist" to death in the aisle. Plus, if I was gonna UE any plane, you can be damn sure it would be Airforce One.

| | | uhh. I think that doing that is probably on the list of things you shouldnt do. With 9/11 and all the terrorism/etc they would not take lightly to you wondering around on a 747 or Airbus. I would recommend not doing it.
