Yeah, that was the old American pavillion from Expo 67. A Buckminster Fuller designed goedesic dome. The acrylic skin burned up in 1976. I think it was due to a welding accident while the mini-rail was being dismantled? It sat empty and overgrown with weeds until 1995 when the Biosphere opened. I remember climbing the stairs up to the viewing platform once. It was pretty badly neglected in those intervening years.

The Biosphere website has some nice history pages on the dome.

Yep, sounds like my friend told me. He said the giant dome was full of plants & weeds, with missing windows and an incredible natural light beams passing through the holes. Too bad I missed that ...I'd love to see some pics when the sphere was deserted.

missing windows is an understatement. there were NONE left. i was in there in 1992, the frame of the escalator (for expo 67 it was forced flow you took it to the top and walked down to ground level on the stairs from floor to floor) it was the worlds longest escalator at the time. after the fire cleanup the place was stripped to bare platforms with railings and the esclator frame had stairs installed in it. The frame was black for years in the mid 80s at some point it was painted but nothing else was done, there was a busload of rock videos filmed in there in the 80s. in the 80s most of the expo pavillions that werent sent back or demolished for the basin and racetrack were still standing but in ruins it was prime time for explorers

Bonjour,

maZe probably knows all about this, but it'll mention it for the other Expo nerds...

There was a great Expo 67 memorial album produced in 1968. It's a large blue coffee table style book called "Universal & International Exhibition, Montreal, 1967". 367 bilingual pages, lots of colour and black and white photos, detailed writeups on the individual pavilions, plus chapters on the planning and logistics of the whole thing. Published by Thomas Nelson & Sons (Canada) Ltd. I found it in my local library's reference section under "607.34 U".

And yeah, that was one awesome post, maZe. Keep 'em coming

It's great to be alive!

yes. there is also a black book published on the Expo ("Remember Expo" it's called I believe if my memory is right). The Black book is pretty easy to find. There is also - the most difficult one to find- a brown book on Expo, which was produced by the City of Montreal to give as a present to head of states and other dignitaries. Great, great book.

There is also "La petite histoire d'Expo 67" done by Yves Jasmin in 1992 or 97 if I remember correctly. great book too. We learn in there that Pierre Bourque was in charge of the trees at Expo 67, one of his first jobs! there isn't enough pics in there though...anyway.

Also, there is the official guide of Expo 67 available, which you can buy on ebay for 10$ most of the times and even better, there is the 1968 guide of Terre des hommes...There's already a few pavillions missing in the 1968 books.

That's cause legally, each country owned its pavillion and at the end of Expo 67, countries were suppose to demolish their pavillions or remove them from the premises. Some countries left with their pavillion (USSR, Cuba, etc.) but Mayor Drapeau asked each country to "give" its pavillion to the City of Montreal so it could keep the Expo 67 spirit alive in the upcoming summers. Most countries did but of course, they removed all the stuff inside their pavillions.

So Terre des hommes was nice but all pavillions were completely empty (with a few rare exceptions...). Pavillions of Expo 67 and sculptures are now all over the world. Cuba pavillion is still accessible in Cuba, same with the one for the USSR. A pavillion (can't remember which country - Yougoslavia I think) ended up being a cultural center in Newfoundland and can still be visited today. Some of the art in now in Calgary, the "Family Tree" sculpture is now in Métro Lionel-Groulx, Alex Calder's sculpture was moved a few years ago - in 1991-92 I think - (there is almost exactly the same sculpture in Berlin, also by Calder), some of the express train of Expo 67 ended up transporting mining staff in Russia...

Pavillions were bulldozed to make way for the Olympic bassin in 1976 and for the F1 circuit. Lots of the remaining pavillions were demolished in the late 80's. Some were used again, after being left abandonned, for the Floralies in 81, then abandonned again. Some are still standing today, yet in VERY bad shape (Jamaica being worst example as the exterior walls are falling in pieces) and abandonned. And with La Ronde that was sold to a private american company - Six Flags (aka Sick flags) - well, that was the end of the 1800's carrousel and a few other remains of Expo.

I've got thousands of pics of Expo 67 and tons of memorabilias, I guess I could add a few pics in the UEDB...some of the abandonned pavillions in the 80's...

Ok. I'll shut up now.
