Atlas Specialty Steels Welland

Last weekend I ventured into Atlas Steels in Welland [entry details removed - Jupiter]. While there, my group of two others and myself viewed lots of interesting stuff (cranes, equipment, switch panels, etc.) but I had a strong desire to view the other "non-industrial" sections of the complex, such as the offices or cafeteria. I saw very little of the complex, due to limited time, and searched for such areas, but was unsuccessful. I believe there were some offices behind a door, but it was locked. Anyone know where in the complex I might find some of these areas? Anyone have any other information about exploring this place that might be of any interest to me? Thank you

Sorry, my battery charger failed to work properly and I was unaware of this until I got on location. If I go back, perhaps this or next weekend, I'll be sure to take pictures.

The main offices are inside the four storeyed (?) building over by the main gate. Last time I looked though, which was about a year ago, the doors were alarmed. The rest of the complex is pretty much all heavy industrial stuff. There are the usual locker rooms and one building contains three or four small offices and some rather interesting research labs but that's about it as far as I know.

I don't think any of the cameras are active, but I could be wrong. There's one pointing right at the entrance point we've used in the past but even if it is on, I doubt it's actively monitored.

There's also a guard sitting at the front entrance and you can probably expect to see and hear a few trucks driving around the rest of the property. Nothing major. Just make sure you're not out in the open for too long and you should be fine.

The cameras are still active there and as of about 6 months ago they are still recorded 24/7. They do not review the tapes unless something is damaged in view of the camera or if they think that something might have been captured that they can use as evidence. The cameras are very powerful and can see very far. Some cameras are are programmed to look at specific places and are constantly moving and some cameras are stationary. There is security 24/7 but I doubt the camera monitors are watched all of the time and for most shifts there are very limited patrols.

Are the camera's in the industrial buildings, or only in the offices?

----On a side note, there is some activity. Last weekend I was there and I cam within ten feet of a man with a hard hat. We leaped into the shadows, and eventually he left. We heard trucks outside also. The buildings contain alot of stored, unopened industrial merchandise.

I've only ever seen cameras outside the buildings, and most of them are pointing to the other side of the fence. The majority of the buildings don't even have any power.

It might be a bit quieter if you go on a Sunday.

Most of the cameras are on the outside of buildings but there are a few inside. only the Stores building(which is also alarmed on all doors) and the Chem Lab building and the Boilerhouse(which is at the end of a tunnel). Rumour has it that all buildings will eventually be empty and probably torn down.

I know that Silent Knight was caught pretty bad there a while ago. he told me that the guards said they saw him on camera. he also noted that some of the cameras are able to pan, tilt and zoom in.

the site is patroled and monitored by 3 to 4 guards.

Well if he stood around long enough in front of a camera to be able to observe all that, he deserved to be caught.

Oh, I see. Didn't realize the security guard revealed how their cameras work. Sounds like a nice guy.

Also, I was just wondering what you're basing the "3 to 4" guards thing on?

There was a story on this place last night on CHCH channel 11. There were talking about it being closed for so long and that they were thinking of tearing it down.

There was never more than 2 guards working at one time when the place was open and usually just 1 except for dayshift and some afternoon shifts. There was always 1 of the 2 guards in the main gate office. I think now there is 2 guards on dayshift during the week and only 1 on the other shifts.

Well whatever. Point is, this place isn't as hard to wander around in than what's being suggested in this thread. Even the claim that the chem lab is alarmed is tenuous at best. If this was the case, then you'd think they probably would've locked the doors that Chairsmissing and I were able to mosey on through this past Summer.

Regardless of the number of guards, the buildings are close enough to one another that you can avoid having to walk around in wide open spaces where you might get picked off easily by security.

From what I've been able to tell, nothing except the administrative building is alarmed. Anything else is simply chained shut, but really.. once you're inside the property, and don't do anything stupid, you pretty much have access to 90% of the place.

I didn't say the chem lab was alarmed, it never was, it has a camera inside the x-ray room.
