| | | If that's really the boat your going to use..I'd think twice. Maybe if you can set a tent up on the deck. insects? rain? storms? Of course maybe I'm just a wimp, but that looks like a potential nightmare. Two months on that?

| | | Posted by dev my guess is 2 months from minnesota to new orleans.
|
I would guess it'll take a bit longer then that.. it's well over 1500 miles but lets just call it that for sake of argument and at 25 miles a day thats 60 days.. But I'd assume that they will be taking thier time checking out anything that looks cool.. I've been wanting to Kayak from Chicago to Memphis for a very long time and that trip will take a lil over a month more then likely.. I wish I could go but I've got alot to settle up before I do.. Hopefully this isn't the last time this happens!

| | | I think you'd want something other than a party barge for such a long trip. At the very least you're going to need a cabin.

| | | Jonsered and I are planning a kayak trip down the upper Rio Grande this Fall, and we're going to do it camping out in tents. A party barge would be a real luxury! Sound like a great trip! Get lots of pics!

Not saying that it can't be done. I've known people to sail their 18 footers down to FL on the inland waterway. But at the same time having a dry cabin to store all your gear goes a hell of a long way. You pitch a tent on a party barge for 2+ months and it's going to get old real fast. A little bit of work on the weekend and you could have a nicely outfitted cabin for this boat. [last edit 2/28/2006 10:04 PM by TDK1000 - edited 1 times]

| | | The fun part of doing something like this is "roughing it". If you want all the amenities of home you might as well stay at home. But that is just my opinion.

| | | the river is 2320 miles, give or take, depends on who you ask. i go back and forth between thinking the boat is way too fancy for the kind of fun i was looking for and far too flimsy for such a big river. we were thinking of constructing a cabin, but hear the wind can be incessant which might topple us or blow us around, so we're gonna do some canvas roll down sides and mosquito netting. we plan to camp on the islands or on the boat. mosquitoes will be a bitch, shitting will be humiliating, but what a trip! oh, and i'm not wealthy by any stretch. i work and live cheaply while saving, then travel till my wad is blown. repeat. that's it. the trip shouldn't cost much unless we have to reimburse some agency for a costly rescue...should be able to sell the boat at the bottom... thanks for all the encouragement! dev: yeah two months is right on unless we stop in every big place to explore. We're looking at two weeks. With the speed of the river current and a little gentle paddling, we should make good time. I've always wanted to do the Ole Miss, but I'm going to break que paso in gently!
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | to all who've said they're jealous, why not stop being stopped by whatever is stopping you? come on explorers, explore! and jonsered, after the pc trail, i imagine you're quite trail hardy enough for two weeks in a kayak. should be a cake walk.

| | | i dont think that any one going on this trip is any where near wealthy i for one was able to get the money for the boat with out having a steady job and doing it completely legally, youve just got to put your mind to something and do it. second, this boats a champ, it'll make it all the way down the river with out breaking, i mean people have gone down the river in canoes and have made it out alive. and as far as the cabin goes, it would be like living at home, wheres the adventure, true there will be hardships along the way but thats all part of the journey. either way this trip is going to be amazing no matter what way you look at it.
