| | | The caves beneath St. Louis? < on 2/13/2006 8:40 PM >
| | | Anyone been down there? There's a whole system of natural caves that stretch throughout the city. I entered the caves beneath the Lemp Brewery complex in south city last weekend, and was amazed. A few miles worth of corridors tangle beneath the abandoned brewery. Who in the St. Louis area has tips on other places to enter the system? roberts in st. louis

If the bedrock in that area were soft sandstone like the Twin Cities, I'd be saying the opposite, but it takes a lot of effort to drill through limestone, so they'd have to have a pretty good reason if they wanted to dig artificial tunnels in that part of town. North city, on the other hand, has mostly sandstone bedrock. I haven't heard of any tunnels there besides drains, but given the age and size of the city it's well worth more investigation. St. Louis has really been piquing my curiosity lately. Although few of its abandonments can be compared to Detroit's, it has an amazing number of them. Plus it has at least a couple caves, and rumors of caves and tunnels "all over town." Frankly I'm sure the all over town part isn't quite accurate (Action Squad used to get rumors about tunnels that run "all over town" in at least a dozen towns in MN), but there are definitely some underground mysteries worth invesigating down there. In addition to that, there are at least a couple more oddities in the St. Louis area - abandoned (and mostly demolished) ordinary neighborhoods, and a couple abandoned smallish ships. And I stumbled upon both of them when I was randomly driving around - I wasn't looking for them specifically - so who knows how many oddities are out there yet to be found. And downtown E. St. Louis is about 90% abandoned. Would be 97% if it wasn't for the clothing shops on the first floor of the main streets. Anyway...The conclusion is that I hope to come down and discover more in that neck of the woods soon. A great city with lots to explore.
I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird. Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping. |

| | | The caves under St. Louis are really quite extensive although recently alot of them have been destroyed in construction. The caves under the lemp brewery were part of the Cherokee cave system but I think they have been cut off from that now.

| | | Caves? Crazy. I've heard about an abandoned bridge there a couple years ago. I dunno if it still exists.

| | | From Amazon's book description of Lost Caves of St. Louis: "Beneath the streets and buildings of St. Louis lie forgotten caves that once harbored Native Americans, mushroom growers, beer makers and even a group of turn-of-the-century "tramps." In the early 1960's, brewery worker Hubert Rother and his wife, Charlotte, explored many of the city's caves before they were sealed."
Sealed huh? I wonder how efficient of a seal...

| | | Some are still there but their entrances have since been filled in and built over, some have been completely demolished for new constructions, but a few can still be visited by explorers.

Help yourself rather than asking for the friggin entry points. Nobody is going to draw you a map and say "hey this is where you get in!" I found the entrance to the Lemp caves the first time i checked it out and Im not even from there. It isnt all that hard.

| | | At the same time, don't you think you should help out your fellow explorers. Many people don't want to commit to an adventure unless it's a sure thing, which is silly to me because it robs some of the adventure from the experience. It's just a simple request really, and if you have the info, why not share it?
Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested. |

| | | Because this is not about giving away free info here. First you have to be here for a while, then someone has to trust you enough to either take or tell you. Never just ask about entrances, it is the quickest way to never be told about them. Dave

| | | Seriously. Too many people were trying to get in so they sealed up an entry point. People aren't careful enough. That's why those that know don't tell. You have to earn people's trust and explore with them for a little while first. Then maybe they'll tell you.

| | | Actually, there is an entry point that doesn't involve any buildings. It's in kind of a high-pro area, though.
