"Vandalism" of my own locations
< on 2/10/2006 8:43 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I was just informed by AV that I was going around vandalising locations, such as the ones that I contributed to.

This was something I had been doing in part for the past several months as I delete information pertaining to location, entry information, history, etc. as it is redudant to information found on my site. Instead, I left a link to my article at Abandoned, and brought this up to AV's attention a while back asking if a feature such as a "UE DB" entry that was "link only" could be implemented.

He would look into it.

But now my full member status was revoked because I was removing my OWN photos from the database. I was removing my OWN information from the database. And in every case, it was entries in the database that I had STARTED.

To add, the vast majority of these locations were in queue for deletion, per my request to moderators because of the duplication issue.

These same photos and information have been available, in some form or the other, on Abandoned since 1998.

Not when it is your own contributed items that does not infringe on other contributor rights. In this case, I contributed all of the information provided.

You're kidding, right? The pictures were taken by you, labeled your name, and thus they were your own. You should be able to take down any content such as that without any problems. I can't believe that your member status was revoked, and at the same time, I'm not surprised...

Av once told me that he could censor someone else's image because his picture was in it. It made sense that he would be allowed to blurr his own face. I can't believe you removing your own content would NOT be allowed, when this was.

This action kinda reminds me of what Boffo told me of Cafepress. Anything, images or text created through Cafepress then became property of Cafepress, or something along those lines. Is this the case, Av? I'm not trying to start shit, I'm wondering if the same rules apply here.

I think his reasonings made sense, his content that he wanted hosted on his site. Even if you didn't really agree with just the link thing, I don't think that it would deserve something like the revoking of full member status.

But... then again... I'm the last person that you are going to take any ideas or influence from, Av.

Well, this was something I had wanted to complete long ago. And it is something I will be doing to Abandoned soon. The idea jumpstarted itself after I was called by the police several days ago, about vandalism at a location that was listed on my site. And they came, in hand, with a warrant for my arrest but I pulled a quick reply that got them off of my case. For now.

As a result, most of the locations listed on Abandoned will have location information removed.

Being paranoid? Sure, but its the only route to go.

Excuse me ?

I can ask a guy that takes things from sites if he got contacted by the police about it, as many times as I feel like asking.

And I will continue to do so.

No shit you can. There are alotta things you, and every other mod and owner of this website CAN do. The issue is, should you. I just think that comment was low. You keep dragging every thread back into that ethics debate.

You can say you had permission, doesn't mean I know it's true.

It was a simple fucking question, anyone could ask if they felt like it. Should I ask it ? Hell yes. If he didn't want any questions, he shouldn't mention it on a fucking message board.

While I have my own ideas about what should be removed from the LDB I think its a bit harsh to have his full membership revoked. Turbozutek, Abandonedsc among others have requested their information be taken off the site and it was ok. I'll reserve judgement until AV states why he did this but it seems extreme.

and for once Jester could you stop being an antagonistic asshole? you have no frame of reference on whether or not seicer had permission. Its like you telling me "No DjMalign, I don't have a intimate relationship with Mike Dijital" and me saying "That doesn't mean I know its true". A moderator is supposed to show MODERATION, not fuck with every user when he deems it nessicary.

Wait. You "started" the entries? Are you saying that others have contributed to them since you "started" that entry?

Sorry, gotta side with Av on this one if that's the case. And even if it's not the case, I'm still siding on the "community" aspect of the site.

You contributed to the community. The community may or may not have benefitted from your info. The info and pics became part of the community, and as such, yer outta luck.

It's been a long-standing understanding here that if you contribute, it's for everyone. It's not intended for bullies in the sandbox to take their ball home when they get pushed around (and I'm not saying this is the case here, I don't know what has motivated you to want to remove your entries).

He started the entries and there's only two that anyone else has contributed to. All seicer tried to do was remove his own photos.

No, I started the entry and no one else, other than two locations, contributed to them. And on the latter, it was information that was copied from my web-site, verbatim before the redesign.

You contributed to the community. The community may or may not have benefitted from your info. The info and pics became part of the community, and as such, yer outta luck.

And I've seen other locations come and go, without a nay of a breath from a moderator. In fact, the ones that I had removed information from, with the exception of two, were in queue for deletion. If need be, I can restore basic information to those two entries, but alas, I have no full member status.

See above. Police came to my door and wanted to arrest me because of vandalism that had occured at a location. As unfortunate as that may be, I am taking drastic measures to reduce this chance from *Ever* occuring again.

i'm not so sure that's the case nerdo. I think he has a valid reason to pull info. I'm sure someone in the community can help patch up the deleted info, but I think its unfair to go to this extent.

One problem with removing information from the database is that unlike pictures it's difficult to tell who may have contributed it. Anyone can create or modify location information. If seicer goes in and deletes the information who's to say he's not removing someone elses material?

That's only the tip of the iceberg but was the issue that I think caused av to believe he needed to remove seicer's full member status. To avoid him deleting or removing other peoples contributions to the LDB.

That's why we have the whole "marked for deletion" process, so a mod can review the content and make sure its removal does not impact other contributors to the site. We could just have easily ignored it, but then we'd very well be here having a conversation with another user upset that their information has been removed without their permission.

In either case it's drawing mods attentions away from the housekeeping chores that have fallen so far behind, were they not behind these locations would have been removed by a moderator after review anyway. Does the users deleting the locations themselves, possibly causing issues with other users, or waving their free speech flag and getting the other users of the system riled up really seem like the actions of someone whos primary interest is really protecting their locations and keeping the DB efficient? Or, does it sound like 'Trolling'?

I can neither confirm or deny how far Seicer went to get a mod's assistance or approval for removing the information he wanted removed other than to say nobody mentioned anything about it to me, Seicer or other Mod's looking to get assistance doing the work.

Taking matters into ones own hands is certainly not the right way to solve this problem. There are a number of mods on this board that would have stepped in to help had we been aware of the delay and critical nature of removing the database locations. So, it's not like we hung him out to dry, he went in, after being advised not to do so, and removed information from the locations database.
