Need for New Moderators
< on 1/3/2006 9:26 PM >

This has probably been addressed before, but I did not find a thread on it.

I think that California should have a Moderator that lives in the area. The closest that I can figure we come to having a Moderator is Freak who lives in Alaska. I have noticed that on the East Coast and in Canada, just about every area has a 'local' Moderator. Same with other areas that support a large UE population.

Recently, there has been quite an upsurge of people in California joining and having to wait what is really an excessive time for Full Member status. I know there is a reason for his wait and although I have spoken against it in the past, I do support it (I waited some time myself for Full Member status). The people that have recently joined are just not people that are here, they are contributing and have already posted in many threads with valuable information and pictures.

With very few exceptions, just about everyone that has recently joined SHOULD already be Full Members. With our recent Meet and Greet, many people showed who were in the queue for their status to be up-graded. These people (in the eyes of the people who have met them) qualify for their status and since usually you have to wait for a Moderator to bump them up, they are missing out from the areas they are restricted from.

I am not nominating myself for this position (nor do I want to be a Moderator) but at this time there are a few people on UER in the California area that have been here some time that I think (and so do others I have spoken with) that would do a wonderful job and be great assets to UER.

If the current Moderators could poll their collective thoughts together and make the decision to allow there to be a Moderator who lives in the Pacific Southwest, it would be a great help to all of us who live out here and would help even more so if there were to ever be an OPEX out here.

David

P.S. - I would like to hear Moderators thoughts on this subject and in particular, Avatar-X's.

Colorado's growing population could use one too. Chainsaw would be a good step in the right direction as I when I first joined (previous account) he was the only active Coloradan here.

you pulled this right out of my mouth.

I actually think that the full access system works fine, the length of time thing is sort of a problem. But with the queue length as long as it is, i don't really see a way around it. (barring some one local, as you noted). I think that most of the new guys are ok waiting a bit meeting some people in person, and going from there. recommendations will come in from people they ask and things will go faster because.. who wouldn't authorize the guy in the queue with 5 recommendations? (that was perhaps worded badly, but i'm tired).

I'd just like to have a local mod to keep the southwestern board under control in a timely fashion.

The other thing you could do is if you see something getting out of control and a mod hasn't whipped in to clean things up, you could PM one of us.

It's a big board, and we have lots of mods. We just can't be everywhere at once.

Please do not use the "Modify" feature to remove your post. This is against forum rules.

If there is anyone you would like to nominate to be a new moderator in the California area, please do so. The other mods and I can discuss it in private.

Sorry about the deletion/modification. When idiots start posting in a serious thread, it ruins the whole thread. The bad thing about this was that the thread was lead off-track by a Moderator. So, during a hissy-fit, I removed my post.

Colorado gets along just fine without a local moderator.

You DO have the option of setting up and modding your own private board for your regions, that's what we do - one user created it and the rest of us weigh in on who should be allowed in. Right here on UER even, Private boards can be about UE and not just Melrose Place.

I think what your region probably lacks are Full Members and really active members in the UE community. Setting up meet and greet's, making yourself available to newbs. With little or no moderation "representation" we haven't had any problems.

There are a lot of mods here, and I've never brought up an issue that wasn't addressed to my satisfaction. It's up to you as a user to patrol your regions postings and point out anything that a mod should take care of, in fact that's probably a good way to be asked.

I'm willing to be a Mod, but haven't been approached, it's a lot of time and honestly I have a better time as a user than I'd have as a mod. I can speak my mind as a user and not have to worry about the politics beyond making sure I keep my own account.

I got my full member access here the old fashioned way. I had my own site and participated here, made some friends and was lifted into the network based on my reputation. You don't HAVE to know a mod or meet a mod or a full member at an organized event to get it.

You also have the option of setting up a standalone forum. Refer people from here to there, hosting is cheap and phpbb is free, go for it! UER is a site that's a hub of a network, not the network in and of itself. Add some spokes - and it's your house, your rules.

yet again there is a problem. all the the people you suggested are from northern california. not like its a bad thing but at the same time it would be nice if the person you choose pays attention to us here in los angeles, as the group down here is getting pretty big. as long as this person plans to come down every so often I'll be happy. but we do need a moderator. but like david E i'm not applying for the job either.

Sorry about the Norcal mentality there, dirt. I only listed people I have spoken to in the past or met.

Chainsaw, we do have a local board here on UER. As for the other suggestions, thank you. They are very good and maybe we need to explore something along those lines.

I fail to see the need for a new moderator... unless the traffic in your section of the site is so high that you need your own moderator there, it won't do any good.

If it's about full membership, chainsaw's suggestions are good. Us mods will consider a recommendation from an already L3 person who we know (like chainsaw) almost as good as personally meeting the person who was recommended.

I've never met a mod & I got my L3 and private board membership this way too (thanks El Lobo, Chainsaw, et al). I don't see a need for a Colorado mod either.

Last I checked, Vancouver was a lot closer to California than Alaska is...

But maybe i'm not up to date on all the new fangled geography they're teachin kids these days...

First question I'd ask in regards to the request is;
How many regulars on the board are from Cali ?

edit: a quick search by location turned up a total of 23 people. Only 3 of which have over 20 posts. That doesn't indicate to me that there is a need for a moderator in California specifically...

edit2: strangely some people from california aren't showing up in my search though...

There seems to be some sort of misunderstanding here, David.

The decisions of moderators are not the be-all-and-end-all of who gets granted Full Membership.

I recommended someone for Full Member the first day she signed up, because I knew her personally.

And because I've been around (and how! giggity giggity!), my recommendation was enough.

If these people are in such a rush to become Full Members, then they should be willing to do the legwork to get to know as many people as they can. Even without a mods recommendation, the recommendation of a handful of L3's should be enough to suffice.

I don't see how appointing a local mod would really expedite anything... and if there's one for SoCal, then there should be one for every region in North America.

I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of 100 mods on here.

Try typing in just 'ca' in the user search area and then see how many pop up. Some people did not follow the suggestion that they type in the FULL spelling of their state/province when the signed up/filled out their profile. There are quite a few from California here.

Sorry about the geography thing, any state is always closer to me than Canada in my mind. So, when I said Freak, I meant a person in the US, not geography wise. Should have been clearer.

These people ARE doing the legwork to get to know the other members in the area. And I am not asking for a Moderator for just Northern California, but for all of the West Coast that is willing to go out and do more than just sit around. 95% of the current Moderators are on the East Coast/Canada and are centered within a couple of hundred miles of one another.

For one of us to go met a Moderator (and I am not saying that this has to happen), we have to travel hundreds upon hundreds of miles to see them. Most people back there only have to go to the next town.

If you pay the gas money, I'll drive over to California and personally interview prospective members.
Most of the work by moderators is done like a burrito fart. Silently, but effective. It may seem like there are very few of us, but in reality the most 'vocal' of the mods are the ones you see most often, the rest of us hide in dark dingy offices in the UER Office Tower - Main Branch, plugging away at the site. There are some times when we are overstretched, but not to the point of needing to bolster the ranks with new mods. If you do find something that needs attention, feel free to PM one of the mods, there are usually one or two of us online at most times.

David, did you read anything I wrote?

MEETING A MODERATOR IS ONLY ONE WAY OF MANY OF GETTING FULL MEMBER STATUS.

This site originated on the East Coast/Canada, so it stands to reason that most of the members are from there.

Your solution doesn't make any sense... having a west coast mod doesn't solve anything for the people living in Seattle when the mod lives in San Diego, or vice versa.
