That's like telling some ue person that could be considered a "toy" in UE-lingo to play more tomb raider before infiltrating an actual place.. unless you meant for the toys to practise spray painting on paper... if so then i take back my comment.

also, i dont think that on a site mainly based on the illegal act of breaking and entering and trespassing.. should it's members be preaching the acts of respect towards somebody's private property.

I really try to stay away from these arguments on here, but sometimes you cant help it.

Yes, let's not let this thread turn into a flame-fest.

Personally, I feel that UE that doesn't involve breaking and entering is morally defensible, and I also think that grafitti is morally defensible, up to a point.

Nice murals/bombs in abandoned buildings or on otherwise drab industrial properties... that I have no problem with. What I hate is tags. I hate how ugly they are, and how they seem to cover every goddamn surface in town. Also scratch-itti (on the metro and buses, in the shelters, and on glass of every kind around town) just fills me with rage. If grafitti artists really want to "take back the streets" then maybe they should create things that people might actually enjoy having on thier buildings, instead of forcing the city to spend our tax money cleaning up crap.

Grafitti is art. Tags are visual pollution.

I dare someone to call that art.

Tags suck. Graffitis rock. There is a huge difference between both. I really like nice colorful and well done graffitis, I don't mind at all, MTL walls and buildings could have more of them and I would be happy. They add a nice artistic touch in the city. I call it creative vandalism, wich I enjoy. But again, as long as they are made by graffitis artists. Not punk ass kids painting their stupid ugly tags.

And legal graffitis are boring. They have to be made illegally. It's the essence of the graffiti. Graffiti is about painting and creating art under pressure, time limited. It's raw art. I like it.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll agree with the tag/graffiti distinction but I still think many graffitis really suck balls. When some wise kid decides to paint an ugly 25 x 30 foot mural at Alstom for example, this makes be boil. There's a big difference between street art and masturbating your own name on a wall.

Entering and tespassing, maybe. Breaking? Never. Stealing? Never. Spraying? Never. Vandalizing? Never. At least, for me...

That's exactly what I meant. Graffiti made by experienced artists with ideas and creativity, not kids who tag their names or their gang names.

i say graffiti art (note i said art. I.e. pleasing to the eye) is beautiful..in/at/on the right places. TA Wall is a great example, under the highways is a great example.

On a church, private property, public transport, historical buildings that have value to most is a very bad place to write graffiti on.

graffiti murals, stencils, drawings, are nice, but all the other facets of this so called "lifestyle" i find is just destruction pure and simple. Scratchies, tags, throwups, handstyles and whatever you want to call them is pure shit.

example stm...this is the main mode of transport for almost everyone, at least once a week more than half the population of montreal use their facilities, wow! buses are rolling publicity for my name/crew. why shit in your food? the back of the buses are filled with scratchies, etch tags, and ugly ass scribbles. That is not art, at all. it's even an eyesore.

abandonned historical buildings (ecample malt plant, the only terra cota silos in CANADA) filled with crap graffs and art, both of those are not the right place to write, spray at. it is part of our history, i dont see people writing graffity on the declaration of independance, on the charte quebecois des droits de la personne and on our flags.

Graffity art (i have to enforce the meaning of art again: pleasing to the eye) should belong on something previousely ugly (wall of concrete that is an eyesore) to make it more beautiful.

Thank you
Tap

i have to agree 150% with you tap, sage words for such a young man,i own a building, what gives YOU the right to come and spraypaint it, in some bouroughs IE: LASALLE an property owner has 10 days to remove graffs from his property before the city removes it, bills him and FINES him for not doing it. I know a few property owners that have been victims, they payed upwards of 500$ for not having removed a tag in time. We complain that rental property owners dont repair thier buildings, when they are stuck spending money to remove graffiti its not getting spent on other things, there are some fine examples of gorgeous graffitti around town, a recent place the piers of the mercier bridge. the most disgusting example i saw this week, the former Urgel Bourgie at 80th and airlie in lasalle, been closed for years, no vandalism, a daycare opens in the building within weeks its been tagged, they painted over the tag to get rid of it, it came back. All this does is costs society more in the long run, its the same concept as stealing from a store makes prices go up.

"What gives You" "I own"

you can look at it in many different ways.. I'm not saying I'm pro-vandalism and tags... but tags aren't done because they look pretty. Same as cities weren't built because they look pretty.. do you think that people who go out and tag on houses and/or churches give a fuck about god, or who has to pay to have it cleaned? Who gave the vandal the right? who gave the city the right to build the vandalised building? I'm not saying the graffiti is right, but if tags being an "eyesore" is on the top of your list, then guess what? graff writers like that.

just remember,

i own a building, what gives YOU the right to come and spraypaint it

I own a building, what gives you the right to come inside it even if it just to look around and take a few pics

Graffiti writers dont ask for your opinions... the only ones that do are asking for your permission to paint your property... which is not graffiti.

Enough of this shit. Enough pointing fingers.

And btw, i dont vandalise and I've never painted a church or someone's house or any of that shit... I dont even get along or hang out with graffiti writers... and for your info, yes my front fence has been pray painted, so i know how it feels... but again, none of my work was done for anyone else or for anyone's opinion.
