I assume the rationale is to prevent bogus searches from wasting CPU, but you're excluding some legitimate search terms. Would it be possible to warn the user before searching for short strings? Or to disallow a list of common short words?
If you don't want to change the strategy, can you at least make the results page indicate the search was not performed as requested? Showing 0 results in these cases is kinda misleading.

It's a MySQL limitation.
However, it can be fixed by modifying the config file.
[mysqld]
ft_min_word_len=x
|
Where x is the minimum word length. If you change this value to anything other than the default - 4 - then you have to rebuild all your fulltext indexes, like so:
mysql> REPAIR TABLE table ;

Enter any (complete) URL in the search page, and the results show ~5500 posts. Any post with an URL or a linked pic in it is returned as match. Not too helpful if you want to check whether a link has been posted previously.

I tried it with URLs, and sure enough it found only the posts that had those URLs.
