| | | When I search for words (or numbers) less than 4 characters long, no results show. What's up with that, Av?

I assume the rationale is to prevent bogus searches from wasting CPU, but you're excluding some legitimate search terms. Would it be possible to warn the user before searching for short strings? Or to disallow a list of common short words? If you don't want to change the strategy, can you at least make the results page indicate the search was not performed as requested? Showing 0 results in these cases is kinda misleading.

It's a MySQL limitation. However, it can be fixed by modifying the config file.
[mysqld] ft_min_word_len=x
|
Where x is the minimum word length. If you change this value to anything other than the default - 4 - then you have to rebuild all your fulltext indexes, like so:
mysql> REPAIR TABLE table ;

True, but didn't the conversion for PMs take hours as well? And look how good that system is now.

| | | well, if you are in the search feature and you want to search for UEM or UEA or something like that all you have to do is go UEM* or UEA* amd it will give you results.

| | | I've always maintained that if this issue isn't fixed, there should be a little note explaining the limitation on the search page. There are a lot of three-letter-acronym UE groups.

| | | Did you do so by replacing the inline on the rotary girder? You could also add another gigaflop to the modulated jigulator, in which case you could potentially reduce the phlarnsmeter to negative twenty seven jigaloops. Genius, if you ask me.

| | | Av, when will you get it fixed so I can search on one letter? I might want to search for eh... 'z' one day - surely I'm not alone in needing to search for single letter entries? I know you can do it by adding the entry:
into porno.ini Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | I found another one, Av... Enter any (complete) URL in the search page, and the results show ~5500 posts. Any post with an URL or a linked pic in it is returned as match. Not too helpful if you want to check whether a link has been posted previously.

| | | To search for URLs or any other type of search where you are looking for an exact match rather than a general idea, select "Match Exact Phrase". I tried it with URLs, and sure enough it found only the posts that had those URLs. -av
