|
Nope, sorry. The Adams Powerhouse plant was on the American side. All the buildings were all up stream of the falls with only a tailrace tunnel downstream of the falls. The powerhouse was demolished in 1961 in a sad, stupid and reckless disregard for history. The tailrace tunnel survives today; it is now used as the outlet for Niagara Falls' sewage plant. http://ah.bfn.org/a/nf/adams

| | | The OPGS ...the "OP" as it was affectionately known as, was mothballed in the winter of 1999. The equipment was for the most part fully functional. Once each year they run a unit for about 24 hours. The reason it was mothballed was the sale of the property to Falls Management where the new casino was erected. The power output cables ran up to the OPDS(formerly on the new casino site), and then underground to the Niagara transformer station, located west of the five corners(Portage/Murray Hill etc etc). No longer is there a path for the power to be transmitted from the station. The 3 water intakes for the station are in the "Gate House" which is the ornate building located on the Niagara River Parkway just opposite Dufferin Islands. The pipelines were installed initially in trenches but about half way to their end they had to be located on the surface to maintain the proper slope and were laid close to the old shoreline and backfilled over. The parking lot for Table Rock House is located on top of them, hence the difference in elevation. #1 pipeline is about 20 ft in diameter, and constructed of steel. #2 pipeline which was built in the first expansion of the station is of concrete construction and as well about 20 ft in diameter. In the final expansion, pipeline #3 was built to provide capacity for the 4 additional and smaller units. Because the expansion was a wartime measure(WW1) steel was in short supply. The 14 ft diameter tunnel was built of oak staves and steel bands. The 3 pipelines were terminated each with a surge tank. Surge tanks 1 and 2 are south of the Queen Victoria park restaurant. They are the structure the falls illumination lights are on. Surge tank #3 was located in the middle of the lawn of the restaurant, where the parking lot currently is. The surge tank was demolished in 1974 when the remaining small units were removed from service. All three pipelines remain as they were. #3 has been turned over to the Niagara Parks and they have located their irrigation water supply into this pipeline. I have been in this pipeline, and walked it as far as the Greenhouse. If there is as place that is blacker than this I'd like to see it. Shining a 5 million CP lantern into the blackness I had no return. Talk about sensory depravation. It is not a place to go without SCBA, due to the presence of H2S gas. There are portions of the staving rotted away. Beneath the pipelines is the valve chamber. Since the mothballing, ingress of ground water has created the stalagmites referred to in a previous exploration. The valve chamber accesses the bottom of the pipelines and the 9' Diameter valves are the isolating point for each turbine. Interesting tidbits In 1926 unit 15 lost its feed and ran away. The unit disintegrated, destroying itself and blowing the roof off the end of the building unit 16 was damaged by shrapnel and as a result never ran again. One of the field poles from G15 came back through the roof and left a huge gash on the frame of #8. The repairs to the roof still visible. To aid the war effort, brass covers which enclosed the ends of the generator windings were removed and melted down to make bullet casings. Also the turbine manufacturers trade mark plates were removed for the same purpose, and the fact that it was a german manufacturer made it a bit sweeter.

| | | Are you referring to the Niagara Falls Power Station on the NY side? That one got demolished a long time ago. The only thing that's left now is the transformer house.

I have been to both and I think the OPGS is the best. being that its below the falls, the entry is spectacular! and the valve chamber and tunnels are very cool to explore, and rather safe. the Toronto generating station however is quite dangerous in some spots.

| | | I saw that building last month when I was in Niagara for my Girl's Casino weekend. My Mom got all mad at me for wanting to go explore it. I didn't get close at all, but I got an interesting pic or two I think... I'll see if I can find them.
It's a tragedy. It's exactly like a greek tragedy. We should only be Greeks. |
